What a question! I've been trying for days to come up with an answer, and finally think I have one. (First, though, you should know that anytime I name something as "my favorite," it's hardly set in stone; I may change my mind a dozen times later in the day, and probably will.)

But, that said, okay: Catherine and Heathcliff, in Wuthering Heights. They are definitely not a comfortable couple. Had they married or even lived together, I certainly wouldn't want to live next door to them or even on the same block. Their fights would be too loud, for sure, and maybe even dangerous to innocent bystanders. In fact, they might turn murderous. I'm sure they wouldn't divorce, and although they would probably break up frequently, they wouldn't stay apart long. Neither of them would be happy with anyone else. Would they be happy together? I guess that depends on what "happy" means, in the context of these two. They are both cruel, vindictive, violent people, in control of themselves only insofar as they're able to plot and patiently carry out their plots. They might enjoy hurting each other and then making up. Their sex lives would be passionate and painful, and if they had children the children would probably be ignored most of the time. Which would be a good thing for the children!

So why are they (at least for the moment) my favorite fictional couple? They're absolutely and perfectly matched -- one soul in two bodies, as one of them says. They're two halves of the same explosive whole. Together, they're intense and dynamic, driving the plot of Emily Bronte's novel forward like a bulldozer, crushing everything and everyone who can't get out of their way. Nothing can stop them, not even death. (less)

“I know it's wrong to generalize, but some cultures encourage certain traits, and the ones the iMozani'i culture promotes are ones I happen to like, so I felt right at home from the word go.”
Mary Patterson Thornburg, Eating Bugs

“His own mortality suddenly whispered through his bones like a cold draft under a door.”
Stephen King, Night Shift

“Alice laughed. 'There's no use trying,' she said. 'One can't believe impossible things.'

I daresay you haven't had much practice,' said the Queen. 'When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast. There goes the shawl again!”
Lewis Carroll

“You didn’t stay in academia if you didn’t love your topic. That passion was the only thing that made it worthwhile putting up with the rest of the crap.”
Jeevani Charika, A Convenient Marriage

“The true antagonist of The Masque of the Red Death was the masque itself – the display of wealth and greed and privilege that allows the few to lock themselves away from the plight of the many.”
April White, Death's Door

“how widespread is the view that a criminal trial is not about determining facts and repairing the breach crime creates in the social fabric but about enlisting state power for the satisfaction of the aggrieved individual.”
Joann Wypijewski, What We Don't Talk About: Sex and the Mess of Life
