Robin Geesman Interview Published on: 09, Dec 2015

Short bio or SYNOPSIS here on writing as your passion.

I'm Robin Geesman, the author of the Under Lock and Key Trilogy. The story became a trilogy out of numerous requests and has already gained momentum with a following of its own. Under Lock and Key: The Experiment has recently been taken into consideration at by several producers for a potential book to screen deal. It is book 1 in the trilogy, where a family faces an insanity driven murder suicide at the hands of their father, a notable and distinguished scientist. The surviving children remain comatose from their injuries despite excellent medical intervention and are eventually incorporated into an experimental program run by the same lab their father worked for. The program they're incorporated into was originally developed for warfare, espionage, and interrogation. But it holds the capacity to improve their quality of life by linking into their brain frequencies. As a new patient is introduced into the program, her father inadvertently threatens to expose the secrets being kept Under Lock and Key after discovering the wrong man has been convicted of the attempted murder of his daughter now in the program. But this program cannot become public knowledge. And, so, the scientists proceed to use the original purpose of the program against Gregory Hewitt in an attempt to keep him quiet and remove all credibility behind anything he might expose. Book 2 is Under Lock and Key: The Zone, which comes with the backdrop of an economic collapse within the United States. Greg and Marchessa Hewitt have been severed from the program. The lab has been moved to safer ground, high up in the mountains behind a fenced and guarded community that requires clearance to enter. The community is self sufficient, and the lab and the experiments are safe, as the people of the U.S. struggle to keep from losing everything they've ever worked for. As the story brings us closer to understanding, not only the complexity of the experiments, but what caused it to all go so terribly wrong in the first place, a tragic drama is playing out across humanity as a whole as each person takes their place in the dance for survival. Book 3, Under Lock and Key: Deadly Circuit is in the works and coming along magnificently!

How long have you been writing and what inspired you to do it seriously?

Both book 1 and 2 were published in 2014. Book 1 was previously published in 2013 un-edited by a smaller publishing house. And though it received its share of trolls for being un-edited, it also received such a surprising following that it became well worth moving to a larger publishing house and complimenting the story through editing. Both Under Lock and Key: The Experiment and Under Lock and Key: The Zone have now been published through the same publishing house ~ iUniverse.

When choosing a name for your characters, what do you consider about them that determines what you finally call them?

I want the name to compliment the type of character they are. For instance, Marchessa has a slightly exotic flare, she's independent, but at the same time, thoughtful and caring towards the man she loves, Spencer, her fiancé. Spencer, on the other hand, has a controlling side to him, and an intolerance towards Marchessa's friends. He thinks they're not good enough for her. And he feels like an outsider where they're concerned. And, well, he is. Their nick name for him is 'the sphincter'.

Did you have a collection in mind when you were writing them?

I did not. But the story and the fans supported it becoming a trilogy.

How did you choose which stories to include and in what order?

The story came to be from several scientific experiments that were actually underway and hitting the science journals individually. I pieced them together to create the mad scientist lab that is kept hidden Under Lock and Key.

Do you have a “reader” in mind when you write stories?

I do. My readers appreciate horror, but crave a little higher intellectual stimulation. They're looking for the unexpected twists and turns, the kind that surprise the mind with a slightly mad concept that can be explained to the point of being believable. But there are ethics involved in my stories. Some cross over the line, some don't. Both sides are explained eventually, and the readers get to decide for themselves which side they're on. Not everyone chooses the same side. And the reasons behind each individual reader's choice can be so emotionally driven that the responses towards each other are almost as entertaining as the story! My stories are deemed Psychological Thrillers.

What do you do to get book reviews? What is the best review you ever got?

I don't fish for reviews. I probably should because I did dig up some trolls in the beginning. But I let the fans do what they do. I've had everywhere from 5stars from thrilled readers, to 1star from trolls trying to throw a wedge into my sales. It is what it is. However, I have received 3 professional reviews from top reviewers such as BlueInk, Clarion, and Kirkus (which launched The Hunger Games). Clarion gave me 4 out of 5stars stating ~ "Fans of the medical drama can expect a high-technology twist in unforgettable moments that linger on the edge of a treacherous zone. Wired (pun intended) and strung out for maximum impact, the storyline veers off the circuit board." BlueInk highly recommended Under Lock and Key: The Experiment for Dennis Lehane, Peter Straub, and Chase Novak fans, stating ~ 'Under Lock and Key: The Experiment incorporates elements of horror, medical mystery, and cybertech science fiction in a well-paced, inventive plot." Kirkus goes on to state ~ "It is Geesman's seamless shifting between the real world and 'the digital side' that truly makes the unknown technology believable... an understated medical thriller that serves as a solid springboard for the series."

What does the word “story” mean to you?

Ah the wonderful world of stories. I used to sit for hours listening to my grandfather tell his tales. It was mesmerizing listening to him. I could envision every detail as the stories he told unfolded. It was the best entertainment, being told a story. My mother used to read to me when I was young. I so looked forward to it. There is love in the stories people tell. There is triumph, there is heartbreak. Stories are a way of learning in the footsteps of others. Stories offer a glimpse into worlds we would otherwise never see.

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on the 3rd book of the Under Lock and Key Trilogy, Under Lock and Key: Deadly Circuit where the story behind the original murder unfolds in a most disturbing way.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

I do not. And it is important that I do not. There are certain elements of real events that shape my stories. It is a little fringe teaser I like to offer within the layers of my Thrillers. It gives one's mind an extra something to play with as the story twists along the path. I begin writing when I absolutely cannot hold the story in another moment longer. It is exciting to know I am taking another twist in the path you weren't expecting.

How do you promote your work? How Quotesrain help you in your book promotions and sales, would you like to refer this platform to your author friends?

I promote my work through various venues. I choose them carefully. They must have a good potential for success, and credibility. Quotesrain has been wonderful in that respect. They not only have a beautiful and interactive site, but, also Quotesrain has taken very good care of me. They have promoted my work as if it were their own on numerous promotional pages and twitter. And not just one time and it's over. Quotesrain has stood by me and promoted me numerous times.

Would you like to share something with your readers and fans?

I would like to thank my readers and fans for truly enjoying my Thrillers. I have enjoyed creating them for you. It has been a labor of love and fascination as I have watched all of this progress, as I have nurtured the story and watched you all jump on the Under Lock and Key movement with me. The lure has been captivating on both sides I think. Some of you have become my friends, while others have waited quietly in the background for each book to come out. I understand both ways, as I have been both kinds of fan at one time or another. I think you'll love the 3rd book in the trilogy, Under Lock and Key: Deadly Circuit. The secret cannot be contained!
