What hobby do you miss most from your childhood?
Biking. I loved to bike. My girlfriend and I biked everywhere once the warm weather came. I was almost 10 years old before I learned how to ride a bike, but when I did, I made up for lost time!
Why?As a child, I loved the freedom it offered. Its great source of exercise is what I miss today. I regret ever giving up this pastime.
At what age did you begin writing your first story?I can’t remember the exact age, but I was quite young when I asked my brothers to help me spell words to a story I was creating from some pictures saw in a cartoon book.
What was it about?I remember the pictures had tanks and soldiers so I assume my story followed that theme.
Do you remember the first book you ever wrote?The first book I ever wrote was an unpublished historical romance novella titled, All is Not Lost.
Who is the most supportive person in your life when it comes to your writing?My husband and daughters are very supportive. My daughters are my first go to for candid advice on just about all things writing.
What was the inspiration for the story of the novel, No More Pets?The story was inspired by my young family and all the pets we kept taking in. The title comes from my husband’s popular line, “No More Pets”, it didn’t work in reality either.
What are some ways you tried to improve your writing throughout your high school years?My love for reading really took off in high school, further developing my imagination and writing skills.
Who inspired the character of Mariah in "No More Pets”?My daughter, Mariah.
When and how did you decide that you wanted to be a professional writer?I think I have always entertained the idea of publishing even when I didn’t think my writing was good enough, I knew my stories were.
Your thoughts on conventional vs. self-publishing?Both Traditional and self-publishing have their benefits. You have to weigh the options that each have to offer, and follow the path that best meets your needs.
What route did you choose and why?When I first began writing, traditional was my only option. I never had success finding a publisher for my stories, so self-publishing has been an answer to my writing aspirations. Looking at what each offer, the knowledge that I keep control of my books as an indie author tips the scale.
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?I would tell my younger self to write and read more, never give up on my dreams and if doors don’t open in the 90’s then watch for opportunities as they start to happen in the 21st century.
Which is the last book you read, completely?Carly’s Courage, by Kay P. Dawson - a time travel romance.
Was it worth your time?Every book I read completely is worth my time, especially something from Kay.
Are you working on a new book?Yes, I have another children’s picture book I hope to have published the fall of 2021 called, What a Muck.
Is it going to be a series or a standalone?It is a standalone.
