R S Merritt Interview Published on: 21, Apr 2021

Tell us a little bit about your childhood and where you grew up.

My dad was in the USCG so I've lived on islands and even in a couple of Lighthouses. (Watch Hill light and Block Island SouthEast Light both in RI)

Do you remember the first story you ever read and the impact it had on you?

My mom read to me a ton. I read like crazy. (living in a lighthouse with no cable TV..).

Are you a "re-reader" or are you a "read-it-once-and-I'm done" person?

I pretty much memorized The Lord of the Rings and the Narnia Books when I was a kid. Now I've reread a bunch of Orson Scott Card and SM Stirling lately. I probably read The Stand about once a year... Sprinkle in a little Tom Clancy and some Koontz..

How do you make sure to draw readers into your stories?

I picture the story happening as I write. I try to just relate what I'm seeing and hearing the best I can.

What fears did you have while publishing your first novel?

I was excited to finally be doing it!

What sparked the idea for your novel, Crawlerz: Book 2: Batten Down the Hatches?

Crawlerz Book 1 :-)

If you could improve one thing about your writing, what would it be and why?

I wish I could write as fast as I can imagine!

What would you have done if, like with Kyler, people closest to you started to question your loyalty?

As soon as your loyalty or faithfulness is up for question it's really hard to regain it. You're better never losing it in the first place. All you can do is all you can do.

What's something on your bucket list that you think is unique?

Take my kids for a ride on the countries oldest carousel. (It's in Watch Hill right by where I lived as a kid)

What is your ideal setting to write in?

In front of a window with a fire going in a cabin in the mountains. Preferably while its snowing or raining.

What 3 things should you pack in case of a zombie apocalypse?

A shotgun, an extra shotgun, and one more shotgun just in case.

What's life like in the navy?

Haze grey and underway.

What is the possibility of a zombie apocalypse occurring on our planet?

If there were some sort of pandemic then obviously the government would act quickly to control it and everyone would follow the rules to ensure the public good... Yep...

Which is the next book you are working on? When is it due for release?

Crawlerz 4 is coming out May 15th! Super excited!

When did you join AllAuthor? How has your experience been?

It's been great so far! Love all the cool Gifs and banners you can create on the site.
