Books are a portable kind of time travel. We go back as well as forward when we read them. When we come back into the now, after being immersed in worlds previously unknown to us, we find ourselves, transformed. Touched by their magic, nothing we ever perceived beforehand remains quite the same.†-Suzy Davies

There’s a fabulous plot that takes the reader from Luna’s birth through her new home and adventures to discovering her real value in life. All of this is told in excellent, straightforward language that not only conveys the narrative well and is interesting, but is accessible for slightly older children of around six to read independently so that their own literacy can be enhanced at the same time as they are being entertained. - Linda Hill Amazon 5Star Review of "Luna The Moon Pig: The Pig Who Hid" (excerpt)

Khun Mae went to bed past midnight. After a few minutes, her mouth opened. Her hair was a dark cloud on the pillow. Up and up, she drifted above her bed, through the white mosquito nets, until she was as light as a sea bird. She drifted through the open flap of her window, into the balmy night air. Through the rainstorm she flew, over the city of Bangkok and its blurry lights, until the stars themselves guided this bird on her journey into the mountains, and above Tham Luang cave.

"Till morning, Khun Mae slept on the mountain. It breathed, and heaved, and turned and sighed. The rain fell and fell, a thousand drops."

There Jintara sat, at the treadle. The wheel spun round. As if in a dream, she sewed a thousand colors, thread upon thread. When all was finished, Jintara held the work up to the light at her window. She noticed a long rainbow thread, made of many threads tangled together, that trailed from the quilt. She snipped it, with her scissors, as a midwife would cut an umbilical cord.

Voices echoed around the cave.
“Woower Knar, Woower Knar!â€
But, perhaps, it was nothing more than the cruel wind.
Chaiya glanced across at Niran. They put their hands together in silent prayer.
Meanwhile, Khun Mae trampled the muddy path to the little Buddha at her shrine.
A solitary raindrop trickled down the Golden Buddha’s face.
And Khun Mae dipped her head and prayed.

Hours and hours, Khun Mae slept, but in the morning, she awoke early. She made her way to the window to watch the rain. It came down like rice confetti on her wedding day.
“Ah,†she thought, “Let nothing harm my husband’s son. Our son…â€
Again, she saw the monks, at her wedding. They were unwinding the thread between their hands. She heard the recitations. Then, she saw the benign face of the lead monk. He connected the thread to the sacred water.

Book Review from the legendary Sheila Graber
Suzy Davies sent me a script for her book "The Cave" - I was so impressed with the way she wove fact and fiction, drama and humor together in a poetic - but so down to earth (or is it rock) - way that I immediately wanted to illustrate it. Happily, Suzy agreed - I know you will enjoy reading this unique story as much as I - and love the appropriate ending to the days of knife-edge drama for the lads in the team - "Football's Coming Home"

The symbolism of the red cape is fortuitous and magical and the beauty of the landscape, the night sky, and the northern lights come together to create a tale of endurance, of growing maturity, and of doing what is right as the siblings, Stella and Billy, and their Inuit step-brother, Tom, face multiple dangers following not only the legendary dogsled race route but their own trail of life's adventures. She must rescue Adam from the Snow Queen’s web of evil, defeating the wizard and his dark sorcery. If she fails, the evil power couple will cast a maleficent shadow of doom across the world, enslaving all children until the end of time. In this tale of romance, magic, rivalry, inheritance, and destiny, a heartwarming epic journey awaits.

The Snow Queen reminds me of dreaming, moving from scene to scene, person to person, shifting images, points of view, elements of both ordinary life mixed with fantasy images. The themes presented are so good for children to encounter and explore without feeling threatened personally. Luna lacks confidence in her appearance but comes to realise that beauty is on the inside too. She is aware of stranger danger and yet understands there is an exciting world to investigate but that family and home are important. I loved the blend of traditional fairy tale elements like wishes and magic alongside the more prosaic (and that’s not a criticism) aspects of simply having fun.

One of the most important messages in Housie Mousie and The Big Cheese is that friendship is something to treasure. Teamwork, loyalty, collaboration and “pulling together†- much like rowing and turn-taking on the river - means that we can live happily enjoying all that this river - this great BIG journey that is life - has to offer.

When people see a work of art, whatever it is, it is rare for them to be truly interested in the deep process; the hours and hours of WORK it took to make it - all the first attempts and failures, all the nay sayers and rejections, all the taking a deep breaths and carrying on with no audience, as yet. More than anything, the raw courage it took to make something and launch it into the world like giving birth. - Suzy Davies

Our thinking around Art is a product of magical thinking: that making WORKS of Art does not involve WORK, rather that Art comes from a stroke of genius, is only made in that eureka moment, by the god in the machine. And so, Art is surrounded in the mists of the miraculous, and never associated toil. WE admire the shiny new object, the packaged product, never looking deeper, for it would spoil the dream." - Suzy Davies

The Idea for The Snow Queen
My book is a reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s original story. The seed of an idea to have a gypsy protagonist in my story came from my late dad’s cousin who was a television producer for Children’s BBC Wales. At a churchyard gate, in Llanberis, she informed me that on my late dad’s side of the family, we are descended from Roma people.

My Writing Process
I have written at length about my writing process on Goodreads. Basically, I combine plotter and pantser tactics. I have an outline of the story and a sense of an ending before I begin writing. However, I think you can overplan, so I revise and adjust my ending at intervals in line with the resolution of the story. The characters “tell me” which way to go. It’s a process of forward and back, and thorough editing before it all comes together. I think spontaneity is what makes writing full of life

Nor is this a book just for girls. Stella is a young girl who, I might add, is truly likable--a trait I look for, and she is one who achieves through the strength of will and arm. Undoubtedly Stella is a strong female lead, while her brother serves as a role model for young boys. He makes decisions based on the goodness of the human heart, something this world seems to be forgetting. I wish I could give more than five stars. I highly recommend this work to young and old.

I very much enjoyed the descriptive passages, especially those linked to the more spiritual or mythical elements of the story when the writing takes on almost a dream-like quality. What Suzy Davies has done is take a well known international event and bring it alive through the personalities of the boys, their relatives and the culture of the Thai people so that it captures the imagination of the reader.

The Girl in the Red Cape is a beautifully written story about a girl and brother who enter a dog-sledding race. The author has taken creative writing to another level by mixing a little of non-fiction in with a modern-day take of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. Full of adventure I enjoyed the characters and the description of the landscape and race. I liked the ending where the wolf reunited with her family and the ending of the race. Readers of all ages will enjoy this book.

Her novel "The Girl in the Red Cape" is a marvel to read in that it is, first and foremost, a wonderful narrative. The story recounts the efforts of two twins, Billy and Stella, competing in a dog sled race, against man and nature. The race itself, given the obvious challenges and dangers, provides plenty of page-turning suspense, but what gives this narrative its astounding depth is the relationship between humans and animals. The natural world descriptions are exquisite.
