- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017MJ and Derrick are awesome, I read this right after finishing the first book and now I can't wait for the next. The characters are really staying true to themselves so far in this series and I absolutely loved getting some more time with them. Part of this book recaps what happened towards the ending of the second book so you should definitely read that first in my opinion but not completely necessary. This could be a standalone in that regard but trust me you'll want to read the first so really just start there.
Bumps, bruises, and curves aside you'll definitely want to go along for this ride, I enjoyed it so much! Southern gentlemen are definitely hard to find. I found time to read both book back to back and in my life right now that's almost a miracle, the late nights reading were absolutely worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2014THE STORY:
Derrick Collins met Mary Jane Evans when his older brother Aston was in an accident and he needed a babysitter for his 4 year old daughter Katelyn so he could go to the hospital. It was love at first sight for Derrick and for a while they were really happy. But then life threw them a curve when MJ was offered a job in Florida working for Disney. They tried a long distance relationship and it worked for a while before curve after curve was put in their path to each other. Their road was difficult - filled with love and heartbreak in equal parts - but the final destination made the journey worth it.
THE COUPLE:
Derrick and MJ are one of those couples that you can't help rooting for. Derrick became a father at the age of sixteen and raised Katelyn on his own with help from his family, so dating wasn't a big priority. MJ has suffered through years of bullying and self-image issues, so getting close to a guy has been difficult. They met through Gracie, Ashton's wife and one of MJ's best friends. When MJ arrived at the park to watch Katelyn while Derrick went to the hospital, there was an instant connection. I loved how, I don't know, hesitant they started out. Their first date had this innocent quality to it that really set the stage for their relationship.
I also really liked how Derrick was careful with the women he dated with regard to his daughter, although that wasn't an option with MJ. I think what really appealed to MJ was how good of a father Derrick is, and she quickly comes to love Katelyn as if she were her own. What appealed to Derrick was how unselfish and loving MJ is. These two have so many roadblocks in their relationship that it really does feel like the title of the book suggests. But sometimes going the long way on your journey is more satisfying than taking the quick route, and I think that even though they loved and lost many times, they couldn't have been happier with the outcome. I know as a reader I'm really happy with how things worked out for Derrick and MJ.
THE ROMANCE:
One of the things I liked romance wise was the pink carnations that Derrick would give MJ. That was the flower that he gave her on their first date, and each time he gives her a pink carnation it brings you back to when they met and first started seeing each other. It brings you back to how happy they were and it also is kind of a sign of hope that they will get back to that point of being so happy and in love.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2014loved hearing both sides of MJ and Derrick story and all the characters from the love of Gracie and there is a new character name Tristan what he bid for his sister will make you cry because it made me cry.Thank you Amy K McClung!!!!!!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2017This is the second book in The Southern Devotion Series and I recommend reading them in order as there is many things in the second book that come out of events in the first book.
Derrick Collins is Ashton's brother and a single dad to four year old Katelyn. He has been raising her since she was born by himself with the help of his parents but when he finds himself in a bind Gracie says her friend Mary Jane can watch her. The two soon discover that they have a great time together and begin a relationship.
Mary Jane Evans has a dream of working for Disney and when she is accepted into a two year engineering program in Florida she knows she must leave Nashville behind and follow her dreams. But that means leaving Derrick and Katelyn behind.
Mary Jane and Derrick still have feelings for each other but the distance puts strain on them and soon Mary Jane decides it's too hard.
When Mary Jane comes back to town with an unexpected twist will Derrick be able to deal with the situation at hand and will the two be able to work out their problems? When Mary Jane is confronted with staying in Nashville or returning to Florida what will she choose?
I loved the first book in the series so I wasn't sure what was going to happen with the second book. I thought this book was great but in a different way. The first book dealt with a lot of emotional issues where as this book deals with everyday problems about following your dreams or choosing love.
I loved Mary Jane and how she dealt with her own insecurities and issues. She had always wanted to work for Disney and she couldn't let that dream go when faced with her first hard decision. She was so dedicated to her friends and I loved what she was willing to do for Cameron and their visits together.
Derrick was such a dedicated dad and he had a lot on his plate. He knew how much he loved Mary Jane but also knew that he couldn't stand in her way of following her dreams. He would have waited forever for her if she would have let him.
I loved the emotional parts of this book in dealing with Derrick's dad and how the three sons came together and had some special times together fishing. The brothers loved each other so much and needed that time together.
The end was awesome and I think it gives all of us a sense of never giving up as you never know when love will find you.- Rebecca
