The Road East (Epic LitRPG Adventure - Book 2) (Fayroll) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,012 ratings

Welcome back. Ready to log in?
Get ready for more epic battles, legendary artifacts, and incredible quests in the highly anticipated second Fayroll story. As Harriton’s Fayroll articles spark interest and his career picks up, he remains Hagen the Warrior, but still, a lucky newbie who stumbles across a highly coveted “hidden” quest. He must save the four Dryad sisters. Starting with Ogina in the East, he haphazardly begins his journey on the Long Road East, only to realize that the game is starting to affect his real life.
He manages to come out of many dangerous situations unscathed; happily switching between two worlds, making new friends and facing foes along the way. However, Harry is also forced to pursue a real-life mission inside the game world that shows that the thin line between the two worlds is becoming much thinner. It is only a matter of time before he starts asking himself some difficult questions. What if his luck runs out? Or, more importantly, is he playing his own game or is he being manipulated?
He is going to find abandoned temples, visit the Cursed Village, fight the Serpent King of the Nagas, and deal with epic monsters, all of which is accompanied by clashes of swords and sorcery and epic clan wars in this epic MMORPG. Action and adventure are hiding around every corner just waiting to be awakened.
After Andrey Vasilyev’s More Than a Game became an instant success with readers in Russia and worldwide, he continued developing the popular Fayroll series. According to many readers, The Road East, Vasilyev’s second LitRPG novel, is every bit as good as his first, if not better.
The Road East not only develops the virtual reality of Fayroll but also the real world parts of the story much more than the first novel. It’s not just about new assignments, new employers or even a new girlfriend. The depiction of the offline world is now on par with that of the gaming world – a rare find in LitRPG and Gamelit books.
Vasilyev is certainly growing as a writer. His characters are becoming more and more rounded, dynamic and versatile – and even psychologically convincing. The author also continues his engaging detail and sharpness with almost cinematic clarity. The Road East is a gripping mix of dialogue and action, mixed with a characteristic sense of humor comprised of self-irony and mild mockery, never going too far, but adding color and flavor to the story.

Andrey Vasilyev started writing in his late thirties, because, by his own admission, “he ran out of things to read.” However after his first two books gained nearly instant critical acclaim, he gave serious thought to giving up his banking career and went on to become one of the top authors in the relatively new, but instantly hugely popular, LitRPG genre.

At times, he feels he was meant to be an innkeeper someplace on the outskirts of Bree in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. However, in real life, Andrey Vasilyev is a much-celebrated Moscow-based author, as well as one of the originators of the relatively new, yet insanely popular genre that blends cyberpunk, classic sci-fi, and fantasy.

By his own admission, Andrey started writing in his late 30's and only "because there was nothing handy to read," but after his first two urban fantasy books gained nearly instant acclaim, he had to give serious thought to changing his current banking career to that of a professional writer. Fortunately for his readers, who had voted his debut young adult novel More Than a Game the "Best Book of the Year 2014," he never looked back after that.

Over the next few years, he continued work on his now-bestselling Fayroll series, maintained a blog, and participated in various multiple-author projects.

When he is not writing his intricately crafted, action-packed stories, he enjoys playing online shooter games with his son or rummaging through second-hand bookshops and bookstalls in search of rare editions or personal favorites.

This series is quickly becoming the gold standard for LitRPG. It even stands strong against genre giants like "The Land" and "Way of the Shaman". It is well written and fun and is boosted by the fact that not only is the series twelve books long but all twelve are already finished in Russian and getting translated and released on a really regular, stable basis.
Some of the gender politics is a little stiffer then many American may be comfortable with but it never crosses the line into being offensive and from what my Russian friends say it is culturally accurate.

In Fayroll book 1, Harriton Nikiforov fulfilled his journalist mission of writing about the hottest new VR game. He also managed to participate in some epic quests, join a guild, and even stumbled upon a rare quest chain. After completing his assignment he was promised a long vacation in Spain.

However, in book 2 that vacation is cut short and he’s called back to his work at the newspaper. Only to find out he’s not in trouble but actually getting a promotion when the makers of Fayroll buy the company that makes his newspaper. Now he’s responsible for a weekly series of articles on Fayroll and has to go back in the game to get more material.

Not only that but his new bosses want him to finish the quest with the dryad and bring back the old gods to Fayroll.

    ---

The first 8 % of the story details what was described above. After that Harriton logs back into Fayroll and becomes Hagen the level 33 warrior.

Most of the game storyline is Hagen traveling east to complete the next part of the dryad quest chain. He doesn’t get there till the 75% mark. The rest of the time, he’s just adventuring, killing monsters, raiding dungeons, participating in some PVP, and Guild vs Guild battles.

The real world storyline revolves around him training his new staff for the Fayroll paper, getting into a new romantic relationship, and doing some favors for his new bosses over at the game company.

Overall, I had a good time reading the story. There’s lots of action, adventure, and exploration of the game world. Don’t expect this novel to be an epic tale or anything. It really is just about a guy going on adventures and balancing his real life job with what he has to do in the game.

    Score. 7 out of 10

For me this is a really fun read. The mc is likable and intelligent. There is a good dose of humor and the translation is well done with no noticeable errors. Great idea and well balanced between game and life. Unlike some litrpg books, out of game is not a boring time until the game can be resumed. It is really well written and I find myself reading at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, the ideal job and wonderful life is starting to get a little corroded and dirty. I’m interested in how that comes out.

The main character 'Kif returns from a deserved vacation in Spain, after events within the first book. Kif had removed his SIM card, leaving communications behind so as not to be bothered. Replacing the SIM and turning on his phone, he's immediately called into his workplace, and book 2's adventures begin -- a "game changing" quest begun in the first book, and a new and far more challenging job.

This book continues and builds upon the fantasy, both within the game and real life. Within the game, he continues his journey to the East, finding challenge, adventure, and a disturbing experience. In real life, a new job, staff, and girlfriend. Events in the game and real life come together at the end, and 'Kif finds that actions do have real and sometimes frightening consequences.

This book is better written than the first, with smoother transitions from the game to real life. At times it felt like there were continuity problems -- time spent within the game and in real life didn't seem to be consistent. It helped that the author was somewhat vague, time-wise...
Game mechanics were a bit light for my personal taste -- gaining experience seemed limited to quests at times, and the reader generally had little idea of 'Kif's character build (stats were only occasionally shown). Level appropriate equipment rather than personal attributes are the primary source of character strengths.
By the end of the book, the reader begins to realize that life also has its "mechanism", with rewards and very real punishments.

A nicely constructed book that shows improvement in writing style, plot construction, transitions, and is moving from a somewhat linear to more complex story line.

Wow! So. Cold! Andrey Vasilyev's Harriton Nikiforov takes the reader on another neatly woven tale of digital life in fantasy Fayroll and fantastic life in fictional Moscow. The adventures are challenging, the characters deep and the suspense bleeding edge...literally (yes, that WAS necessary. Read and you will learn why.) Sadly, having finished Book 2 of Fayroll there is no Book 3 yet! Time to visit LitWorld and check out their other authors.

is the first I found where I am not annoyed about the real life stuff. Good explanation for being in-game and a lovely, funny read. The translation is done pretty well and editing and spelling quite good. Loved the world and the adventures of the MC. The russian-style is not overdone so Westerners can still follow it. Loved the Footnotes ;) Looking forward to the third one!

So Book Two and it was as good as the first one. Only saw one obvious typo, but then i am not a good proof reader!

However the story continues to develop well with believable leveling of the character, clever play style, which is not so "unique" as to be unrealistic. Good character introductions which make the game believable and some appropriate mystery which may be obvious, but then may not be, so worth exploring. At least we are being lead with a depth of writing in several directions all of which are visible to the reader.

Game world gets richer and the Andrey (if I may use your first name) does seem to recognize that a fully immersive world will have to offer a lot more content than a couple of small play areas, which some books do not seem to acknowledge.

Keep it up i am eager for Book Three, when is it due???
