When the Obsidian Empire obliterates the Star Alliance with the help of the Zarlacks, an old evil race long thought extinct, the universe is set ablaze.

The last survivors are forced to make a blind jump beyond the outer reach of the charted universe, to a world teeming with life: Earth.

The fleet’s arrival inadvertently alerts the enemies to the presence of sentient life in that part of space, resulting in a swift and devastating invasion of the blue marble. Under the guidance of the Olympian goddess of Love, Aphroditis, Lieutenant Chase Athanatos learns of his origins and must race against time in a daring attempt to save Earth, their Last Sanctuary.

With Earth now thrown at the center of the conflict, the newly formed Earth Alliance struggles to keep the enemy at bay. Desperately outnumbered, Chase and his friends must wage one battle after another while seeking new allies to survive. The First Universe in Flames Trilogy (Books 1- 3) by Christian Kallias is an entertaining and well-written Sci-Fi series about alien races, warring factions, Earth in jeopardy, etc. with some Greek mythological characters thrown in for spice. The hero, Chase, who doesn't know his origin, his species (a Fury) or understand his emerging powers, is a fighter pilot for the Space Alliance which consists mainly of humans pitted against the evil forces of the Obsidian Empire and their Zarlack allies. Following a major space battle in which the SA is decimated, the remnants flee to a destination near Earth to regroup and repair their ships. They arrive just in time to save the Earth from a Zarlack attack and subsequently ally themselves with the technically backward (but quick learning) Earthers who can provide them sanctuary and supplies. In the process of super advancing Earth's tech, Chase fallsl for an American female pilot, Sarah, who becomes his companion and lover. In subsequent battles, Sarah is captured by the enemy, tortured, and ultimately used by the villain, Argos (Chase's brother) to compel him to aid him in his quest to restore the home planet of the Furies. The series is well-written, characters are well developed and the plot unravels slowly with several surprises thrown in. The Greek god of war, Ares, and the goddess of beauty, Aphroditis (sic - Aprhodite) play major roles in guiding and assisting Chase in his efforts to save the Earth and his lover, Sarah. Kallias also manages to work Gaia, Earth goddess, into the plot. It's an entertaining space opera!

Earth Universe in Flames by Christian Kallias - Books 1-3

In the first book, the exciting adventure moves quickly with military commanders deciding on attack and defense plans. It was exciting and fun.
Books two and three seemed juvenile with an abundance of fist fighting between the two strongest males (who were brothers), Chase and Argos.

The plot moved through arguments presented without challenge in a bare-bones, no arguing approach was incredible for adult characters with god-like abilities.

Weaving Greek gods, Furies and alien armies of take-no-prisoners plus the two brothers made suspension of thinking useful. The brothers were by now arch enemies having super human abilities for healing and destroying. After jumping out of a space ship, they continued to brawl as they fell into the atmosphere of earth (without burning up). No sense of reality was possible for this incident.

When the brothers were not fighting each other with fists or bolts of fire, the brothers are also excellent interstellar fighter pilots. We learn that Chase was deposited without remembering parents or siblings; Argos had something to do with the forgetfulness with his mind control and intervention skills.

The second and third books in the series were not as good as the first. While other reviewers have give the next three books in the series (4, 5 and 6) highly, I am not ready to buy the second trilogy.

This was the first time reading something from Christian Kallias and was based on a recommendation by Scott Bartlett, one of my favorite sci-fi authors. I was not disappointed!
I loved the way the truth of life on other planets was introduced to Earth, and was blown away by the tie in with Earth mythology. The series is complex and at times seems farfetched until you fully understand the characters and let your mind go free to believe that there may be powers beyond what we know in 21st century Earth. Character development is slow but powerfully complete. Earth’s acceptance of a power greater than any country seems a bit too easy, but in the end perhaps we humans would accept the inevitable reality of extraterrestrial life and that it is more likely than not more advanced than us. Then we learn more about our own history that fills in some mighty big holes in Earth history using mythology, which comes to life in a big way!
The development of artificial intelligence, already in its infancy on Earth, makes a huge jump forward in this series. The insight into what that may portend for mankind is powerful.
I read this trilogy and went on to read all 9 of the released volumes, but at the time of this review I am eagerly awaiting the final installment to see just how the ‘good guys’ finally defeat the evil ones.

After generations of stalemate in the war between the Star Alliance and the Obsidian Empire, the Empire springs a surprise attack with powerful new allies and all but wipes out the Alliance.
The survivors flee blindly through hyperspace and end up near an unknown planet at the edge of the Galaxy. Soon a new Earth Alliance is formed with judicious lobbying by Olympian Goddess Aphroditis, who appears in a vision to Chase that sets him on a journey to discover his own destiny and previously-unsuspected fury powers. His success will be crucial to the survival of the new Alliance.
Enter Olympians, Furies (released from long imprisonment by Chase's twin brother and nemesis Argos), Asgardians and a dark unknown foe as Chase and the Alliance face one seemingly insurmountable challenge after another, losing ground while searching frantically for allies and answers.
I enjoyed the first trilogy, but on starting the second the formulaic construct of the novels became more obvious: Chase gets into impossible battles that he should lose but manages to find a brilliant way to win- usually via some previously unknown aspect of his Fury powers; the enemy inflicts devastating losses on the Earth Alliance, but it manages to survive and regroup and adapt. There are lots and lots of space battles.
Author Kallias does the formula very well and when I finished the second trilogy I wanted to continue journeying with these characters and find out what happens with the new enemy (not part of either side of the war) introduced toward the end of the second trilogy. The blending of space opera and mythology is a nice touch; if the third trilogy ever goes on sale I will buy it. Recommended for space opera lovers.

So viel Blödsinn in so kurzer Zeit, einfach Klasse.

There's something special about Chase. Turns out he may be related to Riddick!! Great characters populate this excellent space romp which has everything from epic space battles to the birth of a powerful AI and Olympic Gods to Furies. All of which are tied nicely together into a satisfying storyline. Some dialogue is a little sappy but does not detract from the overall story. Well done Mr. Kallias!!
