Usurper (The Parthian Chronicles Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,442 ratings

Doting father? Man of peace? These things are not you, Pacorus. Have you not heard of the hydra? Cut off one of its heads and two more will replace it. You defeat one enemy and another springs forth to torment you, just as the gods torment you with endless strife.
After the defeat of Mark Antony Pacorus has returned to the city of Dura to prepare for a happier campaign: the wedding of his daughter to a prince of a kingdom on the eastern frontier of the Parthian Empire.
Pacorus and his family and friends travel to the east to attend the wedding of Princess Isabella, but old scores need to be settled and a new power is rising beyond the Indus that will threaten the empire itself. Can Pacorus and the surviving Companions can save the empire and the reign of the young, duplicitous king of kings from the barbarian hordes in the east?
‘Usurper’ followers on from ‘Sons of the Citadel’.
A map of the Parthian Empire can be found on the maps page of my website: www.petedarman.com.

"Usurper sees Darman at his best; he has got the mix of fast-flowing narrative and authentic military action spot on. This book follows Pacorus and his fellow Kings as they journey to Afghanistan for a royal wedding. Luckily, for battle-loving aficianados, disaster strikes and Pacorus is forced to defend the Parthian Empire from a new Eastern threat."

I have read several of the Parthian series, and I think this novel might be the best written one so far. The characters were well developed with me already and they all stayed true to their personalities. There were enough new characters to add a new dimension to the story. I like that Pacorus is a little older and a little less formidable as a person, which lends authenticity to the tale. Overall, a great read, with a lot of emotion and plenty of action

Good story, nearly epic in proportions - kept moving all over the landscape and the action was nearly constant. Probably one of the best books in the series.

What I didn't like is the amount of text spent describing every locale and everyone's attire. Is the author a female using a pen name?

The story was somewhat interesting however the main character seems to be lacking the intelligence that he demonstrated in the earlier novels. Plot development was somewhat weaker

I look forward to the release of new books in this series. Darman does a tremendous job of pulling you into the Parthian Empire. I would highly recommend this book as well as all in the series.

By the seventh book in the series I had become relaxed with the story line which was historically interesting but finally the repetitive nature of the personalities became a bit boring. All in all though I enjoyed the series

Antiquity fans, another precious "Parthian" episode, introducing the Kushan first westward push. To be read in sequence, from the first volume on.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ONE
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2017
This is the 7th book in the Parthian series and just as good as the others. Some authors seem to drop off after so many episodes but Mr Darman just gets better and better. It's been awhile since the last book but it was well worth the wait. Readers who have followed this series will know what to expect ( a really good tale and plenty of battle scenes ), and to new readers although this can be read as a one off I would recommend starting from number one and reading the whole series. I would also recommend reading his other series on the crusaders which are just as good. Both sets of books are up there with any historic fiction out there and deserve to be on anyone's reading list. These are great books, buy them today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another homerun!
Reviewed in the Netherlands on February 3, 2019
Darman has written another homerun! This one is also well worth reading. There are still many surprises. My only personal note of cticism being that sorcery’s been getting too much attention to my liking. The influence of Dobbai in previous books was more than enough for me. Nevertheless, on to the next book!
