Since I've never read a historical romance novel, I had no idea what to expect. However from the get-go, Phillipa Frencham, the main character appears as a beautiful young woman engaged to Hector Thurston, a dear friend she's known since childhood. Though their families arranged this union from birth, and 'Pippa' loves Hector, her love for him is like that for a brother. Yet this strong-minded, goal-oriented lady is wiling to honor her commitment for the sake of both their families. Then while visiting her dear friend, Venetia, Phillipa suffers an accident that requires Damien Delmar, a medical officer in the British army to minister to her healing. While in his care, Ms. Frencham feels a passion she'd never ever experienced before with her fiancee.

What is most intriguing about this book is the modern-day thinking Phillipa had in 1815. She wanted a career in art, she was willing to help start an orphanage for the children whose fathers died in the war, and she was brave enough to follow her heart when her own family cautioned against it.

What's not to like? Friendship, loyalty, wit, passion, commitment! If you've never read a historical romance, I'd recommend you give this one a nod.

Oh my, oh my. This is a really bad book. The dialogue, the impossible situations. Men and women toing and froing into and out of bedrooms. Parents allowing their darling daughters to go off with men without benefit of clergy. Between La and "must needs" I was tempted to hurl the volume across the room, and then I remembered that it wasn't a book but my Kindle. The author even lost track of her characters. Referring to Phillip as Henrietta. Henrietta was the h of the previous book. I had problems with Henrietta's story because she left too many unanswered questions. But this book is beyond redemption. Do not bother to read this. Your brain might seize and your eyes might bleed. This is a really bad book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third in a series from this author that I have read. The language the author uses in the conversations really makes you feel like you're in that regency time period. Sometimes, I could only understand the language in the context of the conversation.
Most of the book was about an arranged marriage between Philippa and Hector, since they were childhood friends. Philippa feels compelled to marry Hector because of her family's situation, Hector feels compelled to marry her just because it is what is expected. Are either of them really happy? Enter in Damien and Amaryllis, and both Hector and Philippa find out what true love really is about.
Though Philippa is considered a forward thinker of her time, putting women's rights to the forefront, including war, writing, and art, I found that throughout most of the book, she seemed rather shallow to me. It was only when she was put into a situation where she wanted to put forward women's rights, did she really bloom. Hector was the typical macho male of his time, the heir and well-off.
Even between Damien and Philippa, I felt the emotion between them was kind of flat and two dimensional. Even towards the end of the book when the big confrontation happens, I felt nothing towards her, or Hector.
It was an enjoyable book to read, I didn't feel an emotional connection to the characters though.

This novel was riveting as the reader is totally unsure of how Pippa will resolve her plight. She is to marry a childhood friend, who she loves like a brother in order that her family can prosper. However, even as wedding preparations unfold she discovers that she has great passion for another man. The author takes us on an unexpected journey as Pippa's life unfolds in a different direction.
Pippa is a thoroughly modern woman, trapped in the expectations of the time. She is feisty, fearless and has extraordinary goals for herself. She embraces life whole-heartedly.
Ms. Walters does a superb job of setting and character description. I found the attention to detail especially when describing the clothing of the day particularly well done. Lots of plot twists and an unusual and shocking ending.

Wow! Colorful to the max on this story. Brilliant descriptions made this a technicolor experience, all the way from the landscapes to the clothes and hairstyles of the characters.
I always love a story with a strong heroine, so this one had a treat I hadn't expected: an early women's libber. Of course, the story would be nothing without a sturdy plot with a few twists, turns, and a surprise. Yup, Katy has them, but not where you'd expect them. I like that in a story: unpredictability.
If you are a history buff and would like a look behind the lines with the war with Napoleon Bonaparte, check this one out.

Pippa was a fiery character with a mind and heart of her own. She certainly was a conventional woman of her time and really fought hard to follow her heart. I found that her particular situation was unique, because unlike many romance novels where the heroine’s intended is clearly not the right guy for her, she truly did love him, just not the way she wanted to. There’s drama in the battle between loyalty and love that kept me guessing.

The most striking thing about the book for me was the imagery. Author Katy Walters put a lot of heart into painting the setting and clothing styles of the period. The descriptions of the Manor and the fine garments of the day were as rich with romance as the plot line. It was a beautiful read.
