- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2014I read the book previous to this one (Lady Phillipa's Peril) and enjoyed it, so gave this one a shot. Unbeknownst to me, after the first chapter or two, I didn't want to put it down. Actually, except for answering a few business phone calls, I didn't. I don't regret missing work for this at all!
This is definitely a mystery. Or suspense. Either way, as soon as I thought I had it figured out, Katy threw another aspect into the story--just at the right time, too--and I kept reading.
Driven by desire, the headstrong Lady Venetia will do anything to disprove the letter that her fiance is dead, killed in the Napoleonic War. Kidnappings and more ensue (I don't do spoilers), but be assured, the story didn't end as I thought it would.
In this and the previous book I read, strong women--sometimes hiding behind feigned swooning or weaknesses--show that females aren't the frail and empty-headed creatures that many (not all) of the men of this era want them to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2015I will miss this series read them all. A few weeks before her wedding Horatio tells Lady Venetia they will have to postpone the wedding .He will have to go back to war. He took her virginity before he left. She gets word after a time he has been killed. She does not believe it his body has not turned up. She gets her footman and friend Captain Tom Reese to go with her.she has to find out herself if he is dead.she discovers the truth I had figured out myself what that was. Will she find love with Horatio or is he dead or is Tom becoming a part of her life. I can not go into details but one person in the book needs some type of punishment but got off Scott free. I hope she will write some more books soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2014I don't think my heart will ever recover. To close to lifes realities for my taste the H/h both deserved better it felt like they both settled for leftovers. I have never hated a side character more but this one definitely deserved to at the very least get a good beaten an arm blown or something..... I'm surprised he got let off with no more than a scold!!!!!!!! This author must have really disliked both H/h
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2015Enjoyed it very much. I bought the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2014I think poor Venetia had it the worse of all the Lords of Sussex ladies. She dutifully waiting for her fiancé to come home but receives the devastating news that he has been killed in action. True to her little groups ideals, Venetia decides to gather her crew and find Horatio herself. She knows in her gut he’s not dead. Escorted by Captain Reese, a man from her fiancées regiment, Venetia embarks on a perilous journey to find Horatio and picks up a few stragglers along the way. My favorite part of the book is right in the middle of all the war, pirates and danger – the girls, fearing for their new friends, decide to present them to society. The new girls fear they will be ousted by the English ton since they were abducted by pirates. What a time huh? It made me laugh. First present them, then back to danger! It was indicative of the time. All in all a good wrap up of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2014I have read all of the books in this series. They are good fast historical mystery. The author writes strong women and I enjoyed reading about Lady Venetia. Her fiance disappears and she seeks to know what happened even if he is dead, she must know. There were a lot of secrets, twists, and turns. I didn’t end how I thought which is always good.
I will continue to read and enjoy books by Katy Walters in the future.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2014Lady Venetia Winton does not believe the terrible news that her fiance, Horatio, has been killed in France during the Napoleonic wars. His family tell her to accept the truth, but she knows Horatio is still alive and finds a way to travel to France to find him. That's when her adventure really starts. Mystery and romance against a backdrop of a turbulent period in history. Beautifully written with exactly the right amount of detail to convey the period without bogging the writing down with description. Enjoyable read!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2014Lady Venetia’s Vow is the final book in Katy Walters’ Lords of Sussex series. I’d read the previous book, Lady Philippa’s Peril, and new that I’d be in for a treat. Again I was quickly immersed in beautifully written scenery and period garments that were an enchanting distraction from the 21st century.
The story itself was a fast-moving adventure, following Lady Venetia on a quest to find her lost love. Even with the aid of her footmen and Captain Tom Reese, Venetia is a strong character and certainly no average damsel in distress.
The book was well written and kept me guessing until the end. If you like historical romances, you’ll love this series. Katy Walters knows how to sweep an audience away to a time when romance was in every brick and tapestry. *Sigh*
