King of Clubs (Aces & Eights Book 2) Kindle Edition
In the second novel in acclaimed author Sandra Owens’s Aces & Eights series, passions—and tempers—flare as one star-crossed couple gets a second chance at love.
Covert FBI agent Court Gentry loves his brothers, his job, and his Harley-Davidson. Once he loved a girl, too, but when she broke his heart, he put his emotions on lockdown—until she crosses his path again.
On vacation six years ago, free-spirited Lauren Montgomery fell hard for Court Gentry. She returned home happier than ever, only to descend into a spiral of abuse by her ex-husband, Stephan. When Stephan threatened to kill any man who touched her, Lauren cut Court from her life—but not from her heart.
When Lauren and Court reunite after her friend marries his brother, Court guards himself against the person who made him feel such intense passion and pain. Except the undeniable spark between them is impossible to contain and heating up fast. Six years ago, it was love. Now, it’s just lust. Keeping it merely physical is a foolproof plan…right?
When Stephan is released from prison, Lauren can’t outrun her past anymore, and Court vows to protect her. But with Lauren in imminent danger, Court must question his heart and risk his life to save the woman he never stopped loving.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2017The Technical Stuff: This is book 2 of the Aces & Eights series, but it can definitely stand alone. That said, you should definitely read the first book because it is awesome and it has a little bit of Court/Lauren foreshadowing which adds to this book. This book has both cursing (including f-bombs) and on-screen sex. If those things bother you, this might not be the book for you. There are also a few moments that might be triggering if you're particularly sensitive to domestic violence. They are not graphic or described in horrifying detail, and they are very quick moments in a book full of wonderful things, but they are there nonetheless.
The cover of this book, much like the previous cover in this series, is absolutely gorgeous. This is the kind of cover that would have drawn my attention and made me one-click this book, even if I hadn't already wanted to read this story.
I loved this book from start to finish. It always impresses me that Ms. Owens can write a book with such serious subject matter and can infuse it with the right amount of humor and heart that it not only isn't horribly depressing, but it's actually really funny and heartwarming. Not a lot of writers have that level of talent, but Sandra Owens definitely does and it shines in this series. The heart of these books is of course, the relationships between the Gentry boys and the women they love, but the relationship between the brothers is seriously special and even if these books didn't have a happily ever after love story, I would read them just to read about the friendship that the Gentry brothers have. I love the way that they make each other laugh and keep each other in line, but also the way that even though they're big strong alpha men, they so unashamedly love and would unquestionably die for one another.
Court was everything I had hope that he would be as a book “hero” and he might have even replaced Alex as my favorite Gentry brother (don't tell Alex). Court was protective but so sweet, sensitive but passionate, and he didn't act condescendingly to Lauren or treat her like she was weak or a hysterical woman who couldn't take care of herself. Even when she *was* kind of a hysterical woman who was running on movie/TV-inspired instinct and made some big mistakes, he empowered her and helped her figure out how to protect herself in the future rather than making her feel stupid or dependent on him. I appreciated that more than I can say. Also, his inner thoughts about his mother and his brothers slayed me as I read them. Holy cow, I loved those moments spent in his head, and how he reconciled what happened with his parents while reaffirming how amazing the Gentry boys all are.
Lauren was fabulous – she was funny and strong, and she would do anything to protect the people she loved. Yes, at the beginning she had her moments where even I wondered if she had a clue what she was doing, but she learned from her mistakes, and she wasn't a weak, helpless victim and I LOVED that. *SPOILERS to end of this paragraph* “Pretending to be Court was kind of amazing.” I freaking adored when Lauren rescued herself from the botched kidnapping attempt. SHE was amazing and it made me want to high five her so hard.
Unrelated to anything but worth mentioning: Madison's secret name for Nate is perfect and I laughed so hard when I read it. It was beautiful.
While this book deals with some very serious issues, it manages to remain fun, sweet, hot, and wonderful. Domestic violence isn't something to be bandied about as a plot device, but I think Ms. Owens has handled it beautifully here. She portrays Lauren as a survivor and not a victim, and I very much appreciated that.
If you enjoy a second chance romance story with some intrigue and action, or just enjoy a love story between to characters who never thought they'd find love again together, you should definitely read this book. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2017Six years ago, Court and Lauren met on Spring Break and spent 6 amazing days together. Making plans for the future, they thought things would continue after they each returned to their home towns. However, when Lauren returns home and her abusive ex-husband comes after her (beating her almost to death) and threatens to kill the man she was with, she vows to protect Court at all costs and calls him and ends things with no explanation.
Now it’s 6 years later and Lauren and Court’s paths cross again. He hasn’t forgotten how Lauren hurt him all those years ago. She doesn’t know at first that Court is an undercover FBI agent and is still trying to protect him when her ex-husband starts threatening her again from prison through family members on the outside. Her ex is determined to come for her when he gets out, which is very soon. Learning to let Court in on what is going on and trust that he can protect her and not get hurt himself isn’t easy for her, but she hasn’t stopped loving him all these years later and doesn’t want to lose him again.
As things heat up on the danger side and their relationship, Court will do everything in his power to protect Lauren from her ex. But they also have issues in their relationship to work out. Will Lauren be able to be with a man with such a dangerous job? Will Court be able to give up what he loves to do in order to not lose Lauren?
Great chemistry between the characters, action, suspense and a storyline that had me into it from start to finish. This may be the second book in the series, but can be read as a standalone. I really enjoyed the first book in the series though, Jack of Hearts (which is about Alex, the youngest of the three brothers and Madison who is Lauren’s best friend). I recommend that one as well!
I’m definitely looking forward to the oldest brother Nate’s story!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2022I loved the first book in the Aces &Eights series by Sandra Owens. So it is no surprise when I devoured King of Clubs, book 2 of the series. Unable to stop reading, barely able to put it down for some much needed sleep, I finished the book within 24 hrs of starting it.
Second Chance love, the Russian mafia and kidnapping attempt made for non-stop intense suspense. At times I held my breath unsure that Sandra Owens had left a way out for her hero and his true love.
Her hero in this book, Court, was like his brother,Alex, from Jack of Hearts, irresistible, sexy and swoon worthy. The type of man who makes the best book boyfriend, a man who knows how to make a women fill worshipped, treasured and thoroughly loved. With that much love in his heart I can forgive his over the top, alpha male, over-protectiveness!
The heroine of the story was completely relatable, which disturbed me as I hated her indecisive and indecision, about her love for Court; even as I understood exactly why she felt this way. You know a book is great when you can completely suspend reality enough to begin having conversations a loud with a fictional character! Sandra Owens writing transports me from rural Missouri to the beaches of Miami. I have never been there but through Susan's words I had a vivid picture in my mind as to what it would be like!
With great finesse, Sandra Owens brought her characters to an entertaining happily ever after ending. A must for every book I read!
Sandra Owens belongs on everyone's Must Read Shelf. I already have her on mine!

2.0 out of 5 stars Dragged out story
After the first Aces & Eights book, I was looking forward to reading this one. But I didn't like this much. At times, it just dragged. Too much of crying from Lauren, too much running away and leaving Court bristling with uncertainty. Agreed that she had faced a terrible life before, but it was really tiring and trying to keep reading again and again about her eyes welling up with tears and the attempted assaults from Stephan. She is kidnapped, her house is broken into, and flown off to Russia. She doesn't even attemp to stay put and remember what Court had told her to not venture out alone. She just doesn't trust Court because she's afraid for his life. At least give him credit of being an FBI agent that he'll help. But no, she keeps thinking that running away would solve all problems. Doesn't make sense.
Court on the other hand is really good, patient, understanding, brave. He realises that he had misunderstood some things and rectifies that.
It would have been good to end the story when Lauren was first kidnapped.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good read.
Nothing I didn't like. I easily fell hopelessly for the middle brother, as I did the youngest in book one. I will start reading Book 3 tonight, ready to fall in love again. I liked the female characters and their stories are well written. If you like romance, with a story , Sandra Owens is an author for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
Lauren was divorced from a Russian ice hockey player, for an alert team. Things in the marriage were not great so divorce seemed the only way out. Or was it? Good storyline with twists well worth reading. Just ordered book 3
