Alex Gentry doesn’t scare easily. Working as an undercover FBI agent in the biker bar he and his brothers co-own, he hangs with deadly criminals in order to gather information. Danger is just part of the family business. But one thing has him terrified: his attraction to Madison Parker.
Madison is the cousin of Ramon Alonzo, son and second in command to a notorious drug lord Alex is trying to bust. Alex has befriended Ramon as part of his cover, and Madison has unknowingly become his informant. Falling for her could risk this case—and both their lives.
All Madison wants is to get her new bookstore business off the ground, and for her creepy cousin Ramon—to whom she’s unfortunately indebted—to leave her alone. If she could only stop fantasizing about his mysterious new friend, Alex…
As the Alonzo cartel investigation heats up, so does their relationship. But will the secrets they’re keeping tear them apart—or get them both killed?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2017Jack of Hearts was a fantastic book. First of all, I love the cover, the title, and the name of the bar. I don't know if it was intentional, but the name Aces & Eights is awesome considering the 'dead man's hand' was named after a wild west law man who was also known to be a spy. Since the Gentry's are actually undercover FBI agents, the name really is a stroke of brilliance. Although this is book one of three, there is no cliffhanger and it completely stands alone.
As is her forte, Ms. Owens has once again written a fabulous book about really well-written characters – both the good guys and the bad guys, and with incredible chemistry between the main two characters. I finished this book in two sittings because once I started reading it, I needed to know how it ended and I was so into it that I didn't allow myself to get distracted by anything around me.
Alex Gentry was swoon-worthy, and everything that I want in a male romance novel character. A lot of times in romance novels, FBI agents/cops act like absolute swaggering jerks under the guise of being what the genre pretends is an “alpha male”. Although Alex was extremely confident, a little hot-headed, and a smidge cocky, he was never even remotely close to being unlikable – not even when he was undercover and interacting with the dregs of humanity. He was just a flat out good guy who was trying to do the right thing, and trying to protect someone that he cared about. I really loved that about him. Granted, he was keeping secrets and not being 100% truthful, but he was doing so with the absolute best of intentions and with a tremendous amount of guilt, so forgiving him was a no-brainer for me - even before his absolutely adorable gestures of apology.
Madison was a nice combination of a strong woman who was also incredibly vulnerable because of her unfailing love for her mother. Although there were times that I wanted to shake her for being too complacent, I also understood her need to keep her mother from falling apart. One of my favorite parts of this whole book was (slight SPOILERS to the end of this paragraph only) when she went 'Grasshopper' on Ramon. I was so hoping that she'd get a chance to do that, so when it happened, I wanted to fist pump for her. Also, the scene in the kitchen while Alex made breakfast made me want to cry, it was so beautiful.
Along with the love story between Alex and Madison and the really interesting action story line, the secondary characters that we were supposed to like were fabulous. The ones we weren't supposed to like were so creepy and awful that I wasn't at all sad about their fates. Ramon and Trina, specifically. Every time those two were even mentioned, my skin crawled, which is a testament to Ms. Owen's talent for nailing characterization. And the 'good guys' were GREAT. I adored the Gentry boys who were both funny and entertaining in their own ways, and I am looking forward to learning more about them. I am especially anxious for Court and Lauren's book, but judging by the little glimpses of Nate we got, I think that Nate will be the wild card (pun intended) in the group. I can't wait for the rest of this series.
That epilogue, though. It was not at all what I was expecting and I NEED to know more. It is going to be a long wait for the next book to be released.
If you like a story with action and intrigue wrapped around a really sweet love story about two people who belong together, you should give this one a read – you won't be sorry.
I requested and received an ARC of this book. I was under no absolutely obligation to review it, but did so - AND pre-ordered the book - because I very much enjoyed the the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2017I thought the book was well written with an interesting plot and characters that are well developed. I didn't realize that this is the first book in a series about the Gentry brothers, Alex,Nate and Court. Great story line. They are undercover FBI agents running a biker bar. This is Alex's story. He falls in love with Madison whose cousin and uncle are a part of the drug smuggling ring they are watching. He has to first determine if Madison is aware of or in anyway involved in her relative's business. She isn't and has a whole story of her own. The book is good on so many levels. First of all Alex is one bad--s agent will do anything to protect the woman he loves, loyal to his brothers and the FBI. Madison suspects that her uncle is engaged in criminal activities and does the best that she can to keep her mother from being too close to him. She also has to continually ward off the unwanted advances of her cousin Ramon. Can't help but love the Gentry boys who were raised by an abusive father after their mother inexplicably left. Court, the eldest protected his brothers as best he could from the father and saw to it that his brothers and himself grew into fine men. I plan to read the other books in the series, this one was that good. Also can't wait to find out why their mother, who obviously loved her boys left them.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2017Congrats to Sandra for the beginning of another wonderful new series starring the sizzling Gentry brothers. Super hot and badass Alex stars in this brilliant first novel. Right from the get go Sandra hooks me in with loads of excitement! I loved meeting the Gentry brothers early on in their biker bar. Undercover FBI agents, they are tough as nails, super hot with just the right amount of sweetness. I already had a soft spot for Alex from the very first chapter! A favourite description is 'midnight eyes' love that!
Sandra's fabulous sense of humour, which I love, comes through in lots of the dialogue with the characters. We meet Madison who is Alex's love interest and their chemistry is palpable! Alex is very sensual and Madison gives as good as she gets.
Ramon is definitely super creepy and so is Trina. They make my blood run cold. Great villains!
Amazingly amongst all the tough talk and action, the characters have an underlying vulnerability which Sandra captures beautifully. I love the way despite Madison fearing that Alex may be bad because he hangs out with her creepy cousin, she is willing to take the risk of letting him into her heart even if it may be broken later. Deep down she senses his goodness.
What a line! "You'll have the Gentry brothers on your side" they've won me over!
Sandra had me on the edge of my seat many times and teary on occasion. I was so hooked into the story by the main characters that I cheered when things went their way.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I am so excited that we have more to look forward to with the Gentry brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you on the edge
Madison and Alex are attracted to each other, but hesitant to work on it. Ramon's sick obsession of Madison, Alex worrying about Madison, and Madison's contradictory feelings for Alex keep you on the edge. As things come to a boil, Madison and Alex finally resolve their issues and get together.
It's a good story and keeps you on the edge.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5-4 Alex & Madison Stars
I enjoyed this book and thought it was a good start to a series that I will definitely be reading.
Alex is the youngest of the three Gentry brothers who are all FBI agents and run the Aces & Eights bar as a cover for their law enforcement backgrounds. He is working on a case that brings him into contact with our heroine, Madison. She has a hunch that her nasty uncle and creepy cousin are up to no good but she has no idea what the extent of their criminal activity is.
The characters are well written and I think at times I preferred the other two brothers to Alex. I understood why he felt he couldn't get involved with Madison at times but he irritated me a bit with his back and forth. I did like his loyalty though - he doesn't mess around with other women once he meets Madison.
Madison was likeable and she was a sweet heroine who showed her strong backbone when required. Lauren, her best friend is really feisty and I am itching to know if she and Court will get a book.
Overall, a really enjoyable read that sets up a series well.
HEA? Yes but more a HFN I would say.
