The Letter Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 709 ratings

The story of a betrayal that wasn't. Even so, it still tore two lovers apart for eleven years. On the eve of their wedding, Michael Jeffres, Earl of Daventry, found his betrothed, the woman who meant as much to him as the air he breathed, in bed with his cousin. Diana, the daughter of a marquess, remembers nothing of that night. All she knows is she was forced to marry Michael's cousin, Leo, and then spent the next eleven years in hell. When the two lovers are brought back together by a letter from Leo a year after his death, Michael and Diana must struggle through all the lies and secrets before they can find a love that far surpasses the one of their youth.

The Letter by Sandra Owens grabbed my attention from page one and never let up. My heart was broken from all the pain that Michael and Diana had been through over the past ten years and watching the struggle the two went through to reclaim the love they had once had.

Ten years earlier, Michael's beloved fiancée and cousin, were found in bed together. With his heart and trust destroyed, Michael left and never looked back. Despite proclaiming her innocence, Diana was forced to marry Leo and the next ten years of their marriage were a living hell. Leo physically and mentally abused Diana and their young son leaving many physical and mental scars.

The letter in the book's title is a letter from Leo to Michael sent after Leo has died. In the letter, Leo boasts of his triumph over Michael by stealing the only woman Michael had ever loved. Leo boasts of breaking Diana's spirit and destroying her. Realizing he has been a fool, Michael seeks out Diana to try and make things right. He is devastated at the change in the woman he once loved and he is determined to help her regain her spirit. Along the way, he finds himself falling in love with Diana all over again. But can he earn her forgiveness for believing Leo over her all those years ago?

The Letter inspired so many emotions in me - sadness, anger, and joy just to start with. I cried actual tears as Diana revealed just how Leo had abused her. I was impressed with Diana's determination to protect her son and her own heart. I cheered along with Michael as we watched Diana learn how to be happy again.

Ms. Owens did a remarkable job in describing her characters so they came alive. With Michael and Leo, she created two completely opposite but entirely believable characters. I love that Ms. Owens made the hero and heroine work through their difficulties instead of having Diana just forgive and forget what Michael's lack of trust did to her life.

The subject of abuse, either physical or mental, is a difficult one and Ms. Owens handled it respectfully but directly. She was able to show how the systematic mental abuse affected Diana and was just as harmful as the physical abuse.

Be warned - you're going to need some tissues while reading The Letter. But every tear is well worth it. Ms. Owens has done a masterful job of writing a book that will stay in your mind and heart long after you have read the last page.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot - I did not give it 5 stars because I don't know if I would want to read it again but I am very glad I read it at least once and would recommend it. The villain was a bit over the top, but as he did not dominate the story (being dead and all), it was fine. The author made me feel badly for both the hero and the heroine, and I so enjoyed their attempts at muddling through their new relationship. Plus, there was a good bit of humor injected into the story. Not out-loud belly laughs, but adorable banter that you could hear real people saying to each other. I liked the characters very much, enjoyed the plot (no silly coincidences or unlikely plot devices), and wanted to continue reading to the satisfying ending. I think I will seek out the author's other historical romance.

H is feeling like he doesn't have a right to even think of a chance with the h for about half of the book because of his guilt in believing the lies that started it all. That doesn't mean that he didn't want her the whole book because he did and showed it by his kindness and actions if not every thought.

He has no feelings for the OW, thinking of marrying her because he wouldn't care if she was unfaithful. While he ran away from h because of his strong feelings for her and returned to London still thinking about his plans to offer for the OW sometime in the future, he doesn't seek her out, turned down her advances at a ball and after the ball and then visited her later that night (off page - and I would have loved to read that scene) because he accepted he has to pursue the h.

Of course the OW tries to cause them problems when the H and h return to London so we get to see great OW meanness. I'm glad I took a chance and bought it, the chemistry is great, the damage done to the h which was overcome was good reading and I am now going to read the other 2 related romances for the book's secondary characters. I needed a good historical book and the circumstances provided in the story were different and angsty.

Parts of this seemed to drag, but over all it kept me interested. This couple must overcome a lot, both physically and mentally. It was well written, and the author knows how to put emotion front and center.

The basic story is that they were separated by a lie, and during that time he blamed her and tried to forget her, and she went through hell with the evil man she married. This story is about surviving abuse, and healing old wounds and learning to trust and love again. The hero deals with overwhelming guilt, and the readers see and feel his pain as he is privately brought to tears a few times.

The things i didn't like were minor. It dragged a few times. The ending was a bit chopped off. I wasn't quite satisfied after all the strong emotion in the book, I needed a bigger pay off. I would have liked an epilogue. I get the feeling this couple may show up in a future book.

Such a beautiful, heartbreaking story. You can feel the sorrow, the hurt and all the remorse generated by the act of one evil man and his mother. The innocent heroine was robbed of her fairytale and shunned not only by the ton, but mostly by her family, friends and the man she loved and who had promised to cherish and protect her. It's truly heartbreaking what she had to go through at the hands of her husband. The hero was appalled and truly remorseful for his role in her debacle and he shows from the moment he reads the infamous letter 'til the end that he is ready to redeem himself. Loved the story and the way the author makes us feel the pain and the love.

The Letter is a masterfully written story where love conquers all. Michael, Lord Daventry, is man with plans. Diana, Lady Brantley, is a woman with scars. After being separated for ten years by Michael's evil cousin, the two lovers are finally reunited and the adventure begins as they heal, learn to trust and finally earn a well-deserved Happily Even After. Sandra Owens does not disappoint in this superb Regency tale filled with heartbreak and humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK WAS JUST AMAZING… SO HEARTBREAKING YET SO UPLIFTING!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 28, 2015
**In the interests of full disclosure, I received a copy of this book from the author with no strings attached. It is my personal choice to write this review and these are my honest thoughts about the book.**

THIS BOOK WAS JUST AMAZING… SO HEARTBREAKING YET SO UPLIFTING!

I found myself totally engrossed in the story and just could not put it down. It was so compelling and so rewarding. I found myself experiencing so many emotions…revulsion, hatred, sorrow, hope, laughter and joy. This story touched me deeply on so many levels.

From the very first page when Michael reads his cousin’s letter, I hated Leo Standish. To put it bluntly he was an evil, manipulative, sadistic bastard! Even from the grave his malignant presence is all pervasive. Kudos to Ms Owens for creating one of the most repugnant villains ever. It made me all the more determined to read on and see his evil presence ultimately banished forever by the power of love!

To read about what Diana suffered at Leo’s hands was so heartrending but, despite everything, she still retained a core of inner strength. She was stronger than she thought…she survived. Not only did she survive but she also raised her son Jamie to be a fine boy. But she bears the scars of Leo’s horrific abuse, both physically and emotionally. She is a shadow of the beautiful, spirited, laughing girl she used to be. She no longer trusts any man and cannot bear to be touched by one. I understand the anger she feels towards Michael and her resistance in accepting his offer of help. She feels his betrayal deeply and fears the cold, powerful, determined man she sees now may be just like Leo. But she realises that Michael is nothing like Leo and, although it is a slow process, she comes to trust him and see the man she fell in love with all those years ago.

Michael is racked with guilt because he feels responsible for what happened to Diana. He had promised to protect and cherish her but he had simply walked away leaving her to Leo’s tender mercies. At first, he simply wants to help her…provide adequate food and somewhere to live… but soon it becomes more than that. He wants to see that spark she once had…he wants to see her smile again. When he is with Diana and Jamie he feels a sense of contentment, a feeling he does not want to examine too closely.

Following Diana’s journey to “finding her wings” again is, at times. heart-breaking and, at times, heart-warming but so rewarding.

I totally fell in love with Michael. I love all the things he does to make Diana happy…the way he teases her and makes her laugh. Most of all I love the crazy letters he sends her about the imaginary cats after she runs away.

The scene, where she finally shows Michael the scars she has kept hidden from him, is so moving and so incredibly beautiful.

There is a fascinating assortment of secondary characters who add richness to the story. Michael’s French born, meddling mother, Lady Suzanne Daventry who insists on regaling her son with details of the “fun” she had with his father, something Michael definitely does not want to hear about!
Michael’s valet Hansen who is always being threatened with dismissal and the repartee between these two is just so funny.Jamie is such an adorable child and the scenes between Michael and him are poignant, charming and funny and I mustn't forget one other important character…Peggy , the three legged cat.

I could wax lyrical about this book for hours but I simply want to say thank you to Sandra Owens for giving me the privilege of reading this fabulous book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
