The Training of a Marquess Kindle Edition
Chastain Warren, the Earl of Kensington, Chase to his friends, isn't pleased when he learns he's inherited the title of Marquess of Derebourne. Having recently lost his beloved wife and child, the last thing he wants is to be caretaker of Hillcrest Abbey. Nor does he want to be attracted to Derebourne's widow, but he is. This woman who wears breeches isn't anything like the ladies he's waltzed with in the ballrooms of London.
It doesn't take Claire long to realize she wants this man, and when he resists, she comes up with a plan she calls The Training of a Marquess and works her horse-whispering magic on Chase.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2013What can a reader possibly do but love an author who writes what they want most? More! Was it even possible to write a story as engaging and absorbing as this author's previous work, The Letter? Yes! Ms. Owens has continued her superb, captivating writing style of the Regency Era with A Training of the Marquess.
Chastain Warren, the Earl of Kensington, known as Chase to his friends, who just happens to be the son of the lovely, adorably witty Lady Kensington we got too quick of a glance of in The Letter, has lost his wife and child. Even though Teresa loved him only as a friend, she died with the name of her previous husband Harry, on her lips. In despair, that his long time love and child is lost and thoughts that he will never have more time to try and win her love, Chase spends a sorrowful night on a park bench. He wakes up to the feeling of a little hand of a street urchin trying to pick his pockets. Ironically, his name is Harry. In his loneliness, Chase decides to takes Harry home and make him his ward, only to find out Harry has a delightful double in his twin Bensey. Vowing never to love again and devote all of his time to his two new sons, Chase is appearing to enjoy his life.
Then he discovers he is the one left in line to inherit the title and estate of The Marquess of Derebourne. Upon arriving at his new estate he discovers it contains the widow of the late Marquess, Lady Claire. Claire is in mourning, not as much for her late husband Thomas, but for her precious infant son, Andrew, who died a short time after her husband of fever. With a new Marquess soon to arrive, she fears the loss of her home, but more so her horse breeding and training program, which has been the focus of her life. Hillcrest Manor is known for its prime horses and because Claire is a woman, everyone had assumed her late husband was the superb horsebreeder. Will she be able to convince the new Marquess to let her keep her beloved horses? Forming a harsh, sight unseen, opinion of him based on her past, she is alarmed when she discovers she is immediately drawn to the handsome and charming Chase Warren and his delightful, talented and loving twin boys, Harry and Bensey.
Chase at first is disturbed by the presence of Claire. She is not only physically beautiful with silken white blond hair and clear blue eyes, but she also has inner beauty, strength, and innocence that he is drawn to. Chase fights his attraction, convincing himself that he will be pleased for Claire to have a season in London and find another man to marry. As their attraction grows, Claire decides she yearns to be a part of this loving family. Can she convince Chase that her love is true and that she is not like his former wife, Teresa? Chase had love at first sight once, and it did not turn out well for him. He acknowledges he is attracted to Claire, but works hard at denying anything more than a mere attraction and continues to fight his feelings, denying that he could ever love again, but more, feeling that if he did grow to love Claire and she then found someone else while in London, that he would never be able to survive another heartbreak. Claire has a plan. Unaware of her attractiveness, Claire, having been sheltered by marrying early and not having a season of flirting and courting, knows nothing about how to attract a man. But she does know how to break in a skittish horse. Thus, she devises her plan To Train a Marquess.
So now the fun begins, as this is where this author's talent shines! Mix a handsome Lord, a beautiful Lady, attraction and romance, two precocious boys; one with a love of horses, another with an astounding talent in art, the Lord's delightfully witty mother coming to chaperone with an agenda to match Chase with Claire, Claire's plan of how To Train a Marquess, together with snappy dialogue, and you have a steamy, charming read. Once again, Sandra Owens has written a storyline the reader cannot put down. This author has an astute ability to write emotions in such a way that the reader becomes engaged not only in the story, but with what the characters are feeling. Claire and Chase are enchanting together. Harry and Bensey are a shear delight. It is so much fun to get to know Lady Kensington, but also, as in The Letter, all of the secondary characters from Chase's valet to the vicar's wife Mrs. Fisherman who is constantly nosing around trying to match her daughter Rhonda with Chase, are interesting. Once finished, although thoroughly satisfied, the reader wants more, patiently waiting another release! If you have already had the pleasure of reading To Train a Marquess, then you will understand when I say I love the way Sandra Owens writes a Regency Romance "above all things!"
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2015Claire is a widow who must face the fact that she will soon be removed from her home and also she will probably lose the horses she has trained and made into desired mounts for gentlemen of the ton.
Chase is also widowed. He has inherited a title and an estate and now must find a home and some sort of income for the “poor” widow. Chases's wife was in love with another man until the day she died and he has never overcome that sorrow.
Both of these characters are bright and charming and attractive. Neither one of them starts off understanding the other. Claire wants to be able to train and breed horses and Chase wants to take her to London and find her an appropriate husband.
Claire is terrified that she will lose her horses. They are what made her life worthwhile during a marriage to a man who had no interest in her. The horses have also helped her overcome the death of her two week old son.
Chase is interested in moving to the country to be in a different place that will not remind him of his late wife. He has added twin boys to his life. One of them was trying to pick his pocket and he did not find out about the second boy until they were both installed in his home.
This is a lovely story. Both Claire and Chase are characters who made me want the best for them. They are humorous and witty and both of them have hearts which are in need of some tender loving care.
The twins are wonderful characters. They add so much to the story and their presence shows in detail the kind of people Chase and Clare are. Lady Anne, Chase's mother is another treasure in the story. Her wit and wisdom bring much to the plot.
The plot is well developed and the journey to Happily Ever After is a wonderful one.
If you enjoy love stories which are about all kinds of love, this is a book which will be a new favorite of yours.
Sandra Owens is a new to me author . I plan to look for another book by her in order to enjoy the character development and the humor in her writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2013This is the second book from Sandra Owens that I read, although the plot precedes her first book, `The Letter' in which we already met the hero and heroine as a married couple. In this book we get to see how our heroine won her hero.
As in her first book, Ms. Owens continues to woo me with her prose, witty dialogue and wonderful characterization of major and secondary characters. Everything in this story was flawless, from the first to the last page. I really liked the slow and steady relationship these two embarked on. This was a story of two adults facing unbearable loss and tragedy and finding out that love is possible and even better the second time around. Once more the author uses subtle humor to lighten up otherwise heavy subject of pain deeply buried. I'm really impressed with that. I like angst, but if the author is good, as Ms. Owens obviously is, she'll insert a humor into her stories so subtly, that you may not even notice. That's a talent I heartily approve of!
I loved the way our heroine confronts a reluctant hero and takes matters into her own hands with a unique, yet proven theory of applying her horse training technique on the unsuspecting hero.
I can't pass up this opportunity to praise Ms. Owens' skill in writing children as secondary characters [just adored Henry and Bensey] who added a wonderful dimension to not just the hero, but to the whole story.
Honestly, this has become an author to watch out for. She can have you cry one minute and next you'll be smiling and wondering how'd that happen?!

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, readable historical romance, but....
This is meant to be early 19th century England, so a bit of research would have been useful. For example, the waltz was not common in polite society in England until 1812 at the absolute earliest and definitely not in 1810: and how would someone so rural and naive as claire have known about it and been able to dance it and Kew gardens did not become a public park until around 1844. Most irritating of all, simply because it crops up many, many times, we do not "visit with" people in England. If we visit someone, that generally means we go to someone's house and call on them. It's definitely not used in the context of the children of a household having tea with an adult member of that household. ! The dialogue is also interesting: the boys seem to use a strange mix of cockney with their 'gentlemen's English', inconsistent with their apparent transformation to their new lives, but that's hardly surprising when the adults also speak in a strange mixture of modern British and American colloquial English! I assume the author's American and brought up on a diet of Dick van Dyke / Hollywood cockney?
Sorry if that sounds pedantic, but it is frustrating for an historical novel to be placed in an incorrect context.
Having said that, if you can ignore such inaccuracies and irritations it is a gentle, if predictable, read.
