From the Author

Many years ago, when my oldest daughter was about 2, we were watching a cartoon that had a dragon in it. I asked her if she wanted to see a dragon someday. She said "Yes. A red one." That launched my brain into the idea that became Soul of the Dragon, my first single title paranormal romance.

I'm thrilled to be finally bringing that story to you, as well as the rest of the series.
Soulflight, Harte and Soul, and Soul Deep will follow.

From the Inside Flap

Excerpt
Alexa stayed only a few minutes after the birth. Once she was sure Marilee didn't need her, she left the room to give the family their privacy.

Spent, she wandered down the hall to the waiting area. It was empty, and she sank into a plastic seat and closed her eyes.

She'd never expected to feel this way. All her life she'd known where she was going, what she was going to do. Envy had rarely burrowed into her heart. Even after her mother died, she'd rarely even been jealous of kids with two parents. She loved and missed her mother, of course, but had accepted her situation as the way things had to be.

So she was surprised to be feeling envious of Kurt and Marilee right now. Surprised she even recognized the emotion welling up when she watched Marilee unsnap her hospital gown to try nursing Savannah. When Kurt held his son, examining him intently while he told him to be good to his sister.

She felt so alone. She wanted to live that scene. Wanted a partner who understood her as well as Kurt understood Marilee. She wanted children, something she'd always said she'd never have, because she didn't want to risk leaving them motherless.

God, she wanted.

She leaned forward and rubbed her face with her hands, leaving them in place because hiding was quite appealing for the moment. She thought of Cyrgyn, and determined that somehow, she would get him free of that fucking curse. She was tired of being alone.

"Are you okay?"

Alexa jerked her hands away. A dark-haired man stood over her. He looked dangerous in a black leather jacket and black t-shirt that echoed his gleaming dark hair, but the look on his face was kind.

Alexa inhaled to ease her tension and rubbed her palms on her jeans. "Yes, thank you. Just tired."

The man tilted his head toward the double doors. "You got family in there?"

"A friend. She just had twins. I needed a break. I mean," she corrected, feeling ridiculous, "They needed some time alone."

Something flickered in his eyes before he nodded.

"Is your wife here?" she asked him.

"No. I'm not married."

A spark of interest had Alexa looking more closely. He was definitely attractive. The kind of guy jeans were made for. Cowboy boots under the jeans, enough wear in those and in the jacket to tell Alexa they weren't for show. Lines worn into his face said his life had been interesting, though she couldn't tell if he was thirty or fifty. He looked familiar but she couldn't pinpoint why.

"So why are you here then?" she asked, motioning for him to sit. He did, and studied her for several seconds. "Trying to decide if you should tell me?"

He smiled and she had the urge to test the firmness of his lips.

"Trying to decide how you'll react," he told her, then held out his hand. "Ryc Dreugan."

Alexa shook it. "Alexa Ranger."

"I know."

Attraction abruptly became suspicion, and she pulled her hand away. "Oh?"

"I came to find you."

Alexa glanced around. The waiting area was still deserted. Kurt and Marilee had fifteen more minutes or so with the babies before they took them to the nursery and brought her to a room. She turned back to Ryc.

"Why?"

He sighed and sat back. "It's kind of a long story."

"Shorten it."

"Cyrgyn sent me to back you up."

Alexa didn't know what to react to first. Habit had her hackles up about Cyrgyn's drive to protect her. Suspicion made her think this guy was on Tars' payroll. And underneath was hurt that Cyrgyn had contacted the associate he'd been adamant they didn't need--that he did it because he didn't trust her.

Natalie J. Damschroder doesn’t do anything worth putting in a bio, unless you count making up the romantic adventures that her characters live out in her books. She loves combining end-of-the-world stakes with the relationships that make those stakes personal. Love with a Shot of Adrenaline has infused nearly every story she’s published. Whether you like quick reads you can finish in a day or sinking into longer books, you'll find something to satisfy your craving for action, romance, and happy endings. She also writes paranormal young adult romance as NJ Damschroder, where all of the same elements apply.

Besides her dozens of published books and the awards some of them have won, what Natalie is most proud of is her family. She and her husband have been married over 30 years and still have the kind of partnership she makes her characters fight for every day. They’ve raised two awesome kids now living their own fulfilling lives, which you would think would mean she’d write more books faster. But she's enjoying reading, relaxing with good TV, and sleeping too much to give any of that up. In the fall and winter, almost nothing will keep her from cheering on her New England Patriots, even though they don’t win as much anymore. Very good book. I've always liked books regarding stories about dragons, shapeshifters, magic, etc. This book sounded different than other books I read with this subject as the others usually take place in the past (medieval times). It was nice to find a book that was set in present times and written in such a way that it kept the story/plot very interesting - different, but very enjoyable to read. At times, it kept me guessing as to what would happen next. I found that I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. Much credit to the author for writing a dragon/shapeshifter story that was unique and different. I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Book Review- Soul of the Dragon by Natalie J. Damschroder

Alexa Ranger comes face to face with her golden dragon. He explains that it is time. She resigns from her position as a spy and prepares for the quest she knows is coming. She has dreamed of her dragon since she was three and knows what she must do.
Cyrgyn knows that this is their last chance to succeed. Alexa is stronger in this life. He hopes that this 21st century Alexa is what will make the difference in their success.
Alexa has to trust her instinct as Tars tries to stop the curse from being broken. He believes Alexa is his and he is determined to make her love him. The ends he goes to only makes things harder. Alexa has to trust her friends and her brother with her biggest secret. She comes to terms with who she really is and who her soul-mate is. Even her feelings for Ryc Dreugan won’t stop her from what she can do to save Cyrgyn.
I liked this book. Alexa is tough, smart and can take care of herself. I like the fact that she was an agent which made her an awesome character. Her training was evident throughout the story. Plus she was open-minded and accepted her role in the battle with Tars.
The author created a great storyline that surrounded Alexa. I thought the on-going curse was a great twist. The dragon is a favorite paranormal aspect to stories, so I instantly liked the idea of the plot. The twists and turns kept the story going. I liked what the author kept throwing at the reader. In fact I wasn’t expecting some of it and was surprised when it was revealed. I was constantly trying to guess what would happen next. A great read. I give it a 4 out of 5.

A cursed love triangle reaches it's final cycle for a woman, a mage and a dragon. This story was fine it just didn't have enough of a connection between the dragon prince and the woman he's loved and lost over several of her lifetime to really to milk the pathos of lovers separated again and again over life times, and Ryc muddied the waters - even though I pretty quickly figured out his role in the whole story. On the plus side, it was nice that there was a bit of sympathy for the villain of the piece at the end.

This is an interesting tale. A trio love story, with a forth attached. It has love and betrayal, and an ancient curse. It has billionaires and spies, and dragons, and modern knights in shiny armor.

The book is well written, the pace is great, the characters are well sketched. I didn't know how the author would resolve the conundrum until the end, what is very good.

Don't expect wisdom, memorable phrases or any deep research. But is it good entertainment. The author knows her trade.

I love strong women in books and that's what I got. A serious love triangle or maybe a rectangle and lovable secondary characters added to this fast moving adventure. The hero was complex beyond imagining and the villain far from pure evil. The ending satisfied me but also seemed a bit bittersweet. loved it.
