Another Great Character in the Templeverse! Move over Nate. Callie is handling Kansas City. A young female wizard that has been kept in the dark about her origins, her powers, what magic she can wield. Her mentor, Roland, is a Shepherd for the Vatican, so you know he's keeping secrets. Big Trouble finds Callie, but Nate is on hand to lend a hand when Roland is laid up from injuries. Callie is her own woman so Nate doesn't have everything his way, for once. It's a Hell of a read! Heaven sent! Whatcha waiting for?! Buy and read it already.

    I will admit that I wasn't sure if I would like the main character, Callie. I LOVE Shayne's Nate Temple series and the character of Nate. Luckily for me, this book set in the same world as Nate was so awesome that I couldn't put it down! Seems to me that some authors can't write a compelling character when it's the opposite sex. Shayne nailed it. Callie was full of snark and attitude and was entirely believable. Many of the one-liners had me laughing so hard that it brought tears to my eyes!
    She is a wizard, like Nate, but entirely her own character; not just a female version of him. She's strong and kick-ass, yet at times she is also vulnerable. She ends up way over her head in a race to keep the Spear of Longinus out of the hands of evil. This story has a devious plot that offers unexpected twists and turns- just when you think you've got it figured out, Shayne throws you a curveball that leaves you scratching your head, wondering how you missed seeing it coming.

    Demons, vampires, and bears, oh my! Callie gets caught up in a race to save those she loves before it's too late! She was adopted at an early age and knows nothing about her birth parents. She had oftened wondered where she came from and why she was given up. She doesn't know where her powers came from and why she has strange, silver colored hair. While she is on this, her first solo mission for the church, she gets some clues as to her origins.
    The characters have an amazing depth to them and you can't help but love them or loathe them. It was also wonderful to see Nate from an outside perspective since we are used to seeing everything through his eyes. We get some insight into facets of the wizarding world we never knew before. I can't wait for the next one to come out! I actually love Callie more than Nate, and I totally love Nate a lot! While this book is set in the same world as Nate, it is not necessary to have read the series before this book. However, if you have already read the series, you can see deeper into the other characters and understand some of the hints dropped throughout. I just want to say to the author, "Write faster, Shayne!"

    Set in a kind of parallel world to the Nate Temple series (Kansas City vs. St. Louis; female badass vs. male), we are introduced to Callie, a Wizard in training whose mentor is a Shepherd (works for the Vatican).

    At a high level, when trying to retrieve a magical item for the Church on what we later learn is faulty information, Callie’s mentor is injured and Callie is thrust into a more responsible role, one she isn’t ready for. Through battles with various monsters, Callie learns more about her powers and abilities with the good guys winning the day and Callie ending up more sure of herself.

    The absolute highlight for me was the character of Nate from a different perspective. Not quite as snarky for one; the author did a fantastic job in developing his character from what we have grown to know from the Nate Temple series.

    My reason for 4 stars vs. 5 has nothing to do with the story – it’s a fun, rollicking tale, with lots of action and a solid storyline which makes you wish for more. However as much as I liked Callie, she came across as a little too whiny, immature and stubborn for me, almost stupidly so given her inexperience; although one thing I completely agreed with was Callie standing up for herself given she won’t always have Nate to back her up. But this was only a minor observation as it was fun watching her discover herself and abilities and overall she was an interesting and exciting character.

    As with all Shayne’s books, I highly recommend and I’m looking forward to the next installment.

    I am already a huge fan of Shayne Silvers awesome "Nate Temple Series!!! But oh my he has started something new that has knocked my socks off!!
    Unchained is just down right amazing!! I didn't think Shayne could so perfectly offer us a new series that I would fall in love with immediately, but boy I have.

    Callie Penrose is a, well I'm not sure yet, she has wizard talents, but what else is hiding in this young girls arsenal?? She is someone special for sure! She has been training under a Shepherd, named Roland for over 10 years. He has decided it is time for her to enter the work force by helping assist him and the Vatican. Sadly Callie has an issue with something that hampers her when things get scary or stressful!
    This story is mainly about Callie, Roland and a very special wizard and all their adventures trying to find pieces of something "holy". The story moves at a quick pace with lots of nasties, like bad werewolves, vampires, demons, bear shifters as well as other wizards, cops, best friends, family members and even a Rider.
    There is a ton of excitement, heart pounding action, who is good and who isn't, nail biting, tissue blowing and oh yeah some love!
    I can't wait for the next book which is due out in October. Thank you Shayne Silvers for the start of another amazing/awesome series.

    Shayne Silvers has another hit on his hands. I am a BIG fan of kick-ass heroines. Anita Blake being my favorite. I am even now re-listening to Chloe Neil's Night Huntress ... Cat and Bones kick ass together. So, when I heard Shayne was writing from a female perspective, I set the bar VERY high. Unchained didn't disappoint. Callie begins unsure and timid, plagued by self-doubt and daymares. But we watch her grow into the strong, snarky, kick-ass heroine I love to read. Nate helps along the way, but, in the end, Callie makes it very clear that Kansas City is HER city and she doesn't want to be a Nate sidekick.
    There are the requisite monsters, great fight scenes, a little caring, a little lust. Just enough crossover to have me ready to jump into the next Nate book.
    If you haven't read any of Shayne's books yet, you could start with this one, but for greatest enjoyment, I'd recommend starting with Obsidian Son and working your way though them all. It won't be work ... and it won't take long. Especially if you don't sleep!

    If your a fan of urban fantasy this is the book for you. The story focus' around Callie, a magician who works for a shepherd connected with the Vatican Church.

    Callie is strong, sassy and may just harbour secrets that the reader can suspect but not all are confirmed. She is left to go on a mission collecting theee pieces of an ancient relic which sees her walk from one adventure to the next. Fighting vampires, bear shifters, wolves and demons will she win over?

    Callie is strong in her efforts despite a reoccurring nightmare that has seen her freeze in time of danger and she has her best friend Claire by her side the whole time. A friend that helps, covers for her and supports her no matter what showing that even magicians need their regular friends to win out!

    This book is the first in a series but if you are a follower of the Nate Temple series you get to see Nate from someone else's point of view. Gunnar, Ashley and Hemingway even appear!

    This is a well written page turner with good character development and a story that is sure to get better and better and it progresses.

    This is a great first outing for a new character. I see nothing but potential in Miss Callie Penrose. Anyone who can keep Nate Temple off balance needs to be watched closely. I also like that this series explores a corner of the universe that Temple series shy's away from. The church, the Vatican and so on.
