Editorial Reviews

Review

Greg, a bright, inquisitive and extremely talkative young boy, is not at all pleased when his family moves to Kentucky for his father's job. He would prefer to be spending his summer with his best friend, Rose. But instead, his mom has volunteered him to participate in an 18th century reenactment in which he must wear a period costume that is far from comfortable. Greg has traveled in time before, but he's not quite sure how. So, when he finds himself once again back in time, surrounded by five Indians with tomahawks and war paint, he's not entirely sure what to make of the situation. Having learned a thing or two from his previous time travel experiences, he's less afraid and better equipped to maintain a sense of calm as he faces the Indians who have just killed and scalped a man bearing a satchel with letters dated from the summer of 1778. Author C.M. Huddleston's Greg's Second Adventure in Time brings history to life as Greg explores our country's new frontier in colonial Kentucky. Action and adventure abound in this deliciously entertaining read that is likely to spur a keen interest in young readers, as history takes center stage in the continuation of this delightful series. This book is recommended for home and school libraries and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.LITERARY CLASSICS Book Awards & Reviews International Book Awards * Top Honors Youth Book Awards * Seal of Approval clcawards.org

From Mom in 2015: My 9 year old boy and 11 year old girl get so excited for this series! Book Two is spectacular, especially because we live in Kentucky and have visited locales in real life! A wonderful window into history that will engage young readers.

From 12 yr old Daughter in 2020: Greg's second Adventure in Time takes place in Kentucky and Greg meets Danial Boone. Greg also helped defend a fort against an Indian raid.I was packed full of action and cool history facts. When I finished the book I was encouraged to look up something that was in the book!I read about what happend to martin's station,KY

As a homeschooling mom, I am always looking for fun, engaging books that also sneak in some learning. My daughters (grades 4 and 5) have enjoyed reading both of the Greg books. I went to the author's website and printed off the lesson plans. My girls enjoyed the crossword puzzles, discussion questions, etc. I am hoping to take a trip to Fort Boonesborough so they can see the history come alive. I have recommended the Greg books to our local homeschool community as well. We look forward to the next Greg book! - Amy, homeschooling Mom

In this book, Greg goes back in time-again. He goes back to Kentucky in 1778 and soon finds out that his Mom sent him. He is in Martin's Station, where he meets the Rittenhouse family. They take him to Boonesborough where he meets Daniel Boone. Daniel fights a war against Indian tribes. I was excited to see who would win. I recommend this book for people that enjoy both fiction and non-fiction. Greg isn't a real person, but he goes back in time to a place that is real and meets people that used to be alive. What an adventure he has! - Julia, 5th grade

I like this book. My favorite part of the book is when Daniel Boone's daughter, Jemima, got shot in the butt by an Indian. When she got shot in the butt, she started pulling her pants down and clamping her butt since it hurt so much. I would recommend this book a lot. I like it because it is funny and adventurous. I would recommend this to my friends. I have a friend who loves Indiana Jones and archaeology and I know he would love Greg. - Kat, 4th grade

I really enjoyed this second adventure with Greg.

This time around Greg travels back in time to the Siege of Boonesborough in 1778. Huddleston deftly depicts life on the frontier. The mix of nationalities who moved into the americas in those early years, the clothing, the fighting between the newcomers and the original nations. Once again, one gets a lot of detail, enough to learn from, but this isn't a dry historical read. Huddleston brings the characters to life, especially when seen through Greg's eyes.

What I really found interesting in this account - which is stated to be historically accurate - is the similarities between frontier life in the early states and in South Africa during the early-to-mid 1800s. Although some fifty years later in the case of South Africa, much is the same. Forts, Stations, fighting for freedom from Britain, amongst others. Life too was very similar, as was travel by ox wagon. Though I've previously read books on the early years in America, this was the first time that I really saw similarities between the two.

I also enjoyed the analysis on time travel theories near the start of the book, and it was good that the question of HOW Greg is able to time travel was answered.

Now I want to know what Rose and Mom have been up to. Please!

All around, an entertaining and educational read that I am sure will be accessible to younger readers.

Amazing historical fiction books for kids!

I enjoyed reading this story, especially the archeological bits and pieces that grounded it in a historical reality. The author's personal expertise in this area made this convincing and fascinating. I also liked the hints of her sense of humor that emerged in Greg's account of his visit to 1778 Kentucky. I knew very little about Daniel Boone, and this book has whetted my appetite to learn more! I also got a kick out of the mention of the Indian town, Chillicothe, Ohio. The reason for this is that I grew up in Chillicothe, Illinois, which just might have been named for the one in Ohio! - Dorothea Jensen, Award-Winning Author of THE RIDDLE OF PENNCROFT FARM and A BUSS FROM LAFAYETTE. (I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.)

I love the way Huddleston weaves history and archaeology into this story! When Greg travels in time to Boonesborough, Kentucky, he meets Daniel Boone. But he hasn't studied far enough in his history book to know what happens when the fort is attacked. Huddleston builds suspense as Greg encounters significant historical events in the American frontier during the Revolutionary War. By the end, the reader has experienced the excitement alongside Greg in a satisfying time travel. Highly recommended for ages 9-12!

I read this book (as well as Greg's first Adventure) to my children, and they were captivated by it. We read a chapter a night, and every night they were pushing me to keep reading. Very accessible for kids of all ages, the story is compelling while delivering a solid history lesson. We are eagerly awaiting Greg's Third Adventure!

Greg's second adventure is just as exciting as his first. This time he's front and center in early Kentucky and defending the first settlers from the Indians who are trying to drive them the land. Lots of information about period customs, food, and life. A wonderful read for a young adult with the bonus of a good lesson in archaeology and early frontier life not to mention Daniel Boone.
