Ace of Spades (Aces & Eights Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,295 ratings

Two FBI agents struggle with desire in the shadow of a killer, in the third installment of Aces & Eights.

Nate Gentry has been a rock for his two younger brothers since the day their mom walked out and left them with their abusive father. Now that they’ve grown up, he’s watched Alex and Court fall in love and settle down. But Nate isn’t made for romance. He keeps his relationships casual. And getting casual with his partner is a fantasy he can’t shake…

Taylor Collins has feelings for Nate, too—and though they run hot, her best friend on the team is strictly off limits. Until a spark in his eyes says, Go for it. But reaching out could prove to be a bad move now that they’re working closer together than ever, and on the most dangerous case of their careers.

An investigation into a brutal series of murders is stirring up bad memories for Taylor, and neither she nor Nate can imagine how close to home it’s going to hit. When it does, Nate will risk everything—including his heart—to keep Taylor safe.

The technical stuff: This book has both cursing (including about 15 f-bombs) and some on-screen sex. If those things will cause you to leave a bad review, this isn't the book for you. This is book three of the series and while it totally stands alone and you do not have to have read the first two to appreciate this one, you should read them because they're fabulous.

I loved this book. I absolutely loved it. From start to finish, Nate and Taylor just made so much sense that as a reader, I couldn't help but cheer for them. Despite his hesitation to let it show, Nate's huge heart and his capacity for love and caring was so unbelievably amazing that I really just couldn't wait for him to actually let Taylor in. The way that he protected Taylor (and Rosie and the girls) was incredibly beautiful, but his love for his brother was just...beyond words. Even without the perfection of the love story with Taylor, this book would have been amazing because the Gentry brothers are *exactly* the kind of men who should be book heroes. They love each other unashamedly and aren't afraid to show it, while also unapologetically mocking the crap out of each other. I love the way that they love their women, and the way that they love each other, and none of them loves more than Nate. (If your heart doesn't melt at the line about him falling in love with a decades-old photo, you have no soul.)

Taylor was also a really fabulous character. She wasn't just window dressing or some weak woman who needed saving (even though Nate was determined to try because that's just who he is), Taylor was vibrant, strong, and capable while still being vulnerable and real in a way that few romance heroines are these days. Ms. Owens balanced out her bad-to-the-bone FBI agent persona with her back story, Henry, and Rosie and the girls so perfectly. She was one of the most well-rounded female characters I've read in a long, long time.

If you've read the K2 books, there are a couple of little cameos in here that will make your heart smile.

I would highly recommend this book, and this series, to anyone who enjoys an emotional, heart-felt story with a great mystery plot and a side of sexiness.

Ace of Spades, book3 of Sandra Owen's Aces and Eights series is my favorite book of this collection. A FBI man-hunt provides edge of your seat suspense while the last of the Gentry brothers fights his inner demons that stand in the way of his happiness. Sandra Owens has created the perfect hero,in Nick Gentry. He has such a tortured soul. Yet, his need to protect those who can't protect themselves and his determination to see that justice prevails, you just can't help but love him!
Sandra's female lead character, Taylor, is a perfect match for Nick's edgy character. Her kicking *ss and taking names demeanor, mixed with her beauty and love for children that others have "thrown away" is hard to ignore. She is a woman that we can easily admire and look up to.
As I read, I became more and more lost in the world of Aces and Eights. It is a world and characters that I find is hard to say goodbye to. While I am dying to read the next book in the series, I am reluctant to start. For once I finish the next book, I will be forced to say goodbye to some of my favorite book friends. While I couldn't put Ace of Spades down,so caught up in the story I completely lost track of time, I was disappointed I had read it so quickly because I was forced to leave the story behind way too soon. This series is definitely one I will read over and over again,it is that good!

This storyline sees the growth of the three Gentry brothers, undercover FBI agents, and especially Nate the older. They investigate a serial killer and finally learn they had a mother who loved them to the end and have a surprise sister but where? There are numerous twists and turns in the case and in Nate's romancing his best friend and FBI teammate until he finally understands himself. On to the Queen of Diamonds!

Brilliant third novel about the Gentry bros by Sandra. Could not put it down! Nate is protective, reserved, and super hot. Taylor is an intelligent, beautiful and highly skilled agent who can hold her own with the boys. Standoff is a great way to describe Nate and Taylor’s relationship. I enjoyed the wonderful journey we take with them as they crackle & sizzle together. In Sandra’s words they are a “potent brew” Will they or won’t they? Sandra had me in suspense with their relationship. So much fun. Loved them together!
Sandra writes exceptionally well and transports you easily into each scene, allowing you to feel the emotionally charged scenes. I was so engrossed that at one particular moment I huffed out loud at Nate because he was suggesting Taylor back out of a job. Nate!
I love Sandra’s sense of humour and it is definitely a highlight I look forward to in reading her books. Ace of Spades has plenty of laugh out loud moments. When Nate,Court & Alex get together their interactions are so much fun!
Another brilliant aspect of Sandra’s stories is how well rounded they are. Not only do we get to know the characters intimately but we also get to live in their world through the dramatic storyline unfolding. We get to join them on their hunt for bad guys. Love this!
Her novel is packed with love, drama, suspense, and wonderful humour. It is hard not to fall in love with these super hot bad...s Gentry’s. Highly recommended!! When is the next instalment due? Can’t wait!

The Hero isn't as light hearted as his younger brothers, but you just love the way he raised them and admire him for it. His lady has had a childhood which although different , they included problems that affected her life in a similar way. The children she helped her foster Mum raise are adorable. Sandra Owens has written a series of romances which I was unable to put down. No doubt I will be reading them again.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it

I’m totally gone for the first two books in this series but I wasn’t so sure how this book and I would get along. Nate’s been kind of a Donny Downer in the first two books. Yes, we get that he didn’t really have the luxury of any kind of a childhood. Their mother left their family and their father was a drunken abuser. Nate had the double duty of taking much of the punishment for his younger brothers as well as being a substitute parent. He’s not a light hearted kind of guy.

So it took me a while to warm up to him, not long but it wasn’t instant love the way it was for Alex and Cody. But in no time at all I was as smitten with Nate as I was with his brothers.

As I said, Nate has had it rough. Though he’s pleased his brothers have found love, he knows such a thing just isn’t in the cards for him. There is no joy in his life nor does he expect there to be. He has a job as an undercover FBI agent he’s proud of and he loves, he and his brothers own a business, a biker bar, though it’s used by the FBI to nab the bad guys, FBI being Nate, Cody and Alex and he has a good friend in fellow agent Taylor Collins. It’s been hinted throughout the first two books that there is something a wee bit more going on between Nate and Taylor. In this book we discover there really isn’t though not for trying on Taylor’s part. She knows what an amazing guy her best friend is and she is deeply in love with him but he refuses to take their relationship past the friend stage. But when they are assigned as partners to work a case dealing with murdered prostitutes they are in closer proximity and Taylor tries harder to move things to a next level. But Nate is afraid to get close to anyone other than his brothers in case he proves to be the monster that his father is even if he finally does acknowledge, at least to himself that he has much deeper feelings for Taylor than he’s willing to admit.
As I said above, I wasn’t sure how I’d ‘cotton’ to Nate but I came to adore him. Taylor was a wee bit more problematic. For sure it wasn’t because I don’t like her, I do, but by her nature and by her position as a highly skilled professional woman in a mostly male dominated world, she comes across as cool as a cucumber. I truly understand but I guess I kind of missed the warmth and damsel in distress nature of Madison and Lauren of the first two books.

Still, I quite enjoyed this book and ended up getting a number of books from her back list. She’s three for three.
