Rage: Feathers and Fire Book 2 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 2,474 ratings

Hell hath no fury like Callie Penrose…

Ever since Callie—the Vatican’s rookie monster hunter—killed a demon a few weeks ago, Kansas City’s been eerily quiet.

But she soon learns it’s just the calm before the storm.

Because werewolves begin abducting young women in Kansas City, and a new church opens its doors, pronouncing death to all idols, including these ‘make-believe’ monsters and wizards.

But when one of their congregation is disemboweled by a monster on the steps of the church with the phrase God is dead painted in blood, someone in the church decides to take a lesson from the Salem Witch Trials… And the police seem to be helping.

Callie must catch the killer before Kansas City erupts in civil war. A civil war she inadvertently started. Before everyone decides to kill each other. Or worse yet, her.

But she’s being stalked. By something unseen. More than one something… And with so many new faces coming to Missouri—gods, legends, and nightmares—Callie begins to realize it’s all someone’s sick idea of a game.

And that Hell never really left Kansas City. Or Callie Penrose.

After all, they say Missouri loves company…

Shayne is a man of mystery and power, whose power is exceeded only by his mystery…

He writes the Amazon Bestselling Feathers and Fire Series about a rookie spell-slinger named Callie Penrose who works for the Vatican in Kansas City. Her problem? Hell seems to know more about her past than she does.

He also writes the Amazon Bestselling Nate Temple Series, which features a foul-mouthed wizard from St. Louis. He rides a bloodthirsty unicorn, drinks with Achilles, and is pals with the Four Horsemen. Both series take place in the same universe, because it’s fun.

Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and can be found writing in a coffee shop, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso. He’s hard at work on the latest books in his shared TempleVerse, as well as a few new projects that will blow readers' mind-holes...

Shayne is considered the penultimate urban fantasy write by many, including some of my favorite authors, so I had to give Shayne a try. This book is great. I understand why so many aspiring authors look up to Shayne. Well done, great leader! A wonderful mystery, relatable characters with real dialogue, well written scenes that pop into your minds eye, and a touch of humor thrown in. That’s a recipe for a great novel!

Mr. Silvers has outdone himself. Every book gets better and better. This book continues Callie’s story (first book was Unchained), and the reader gets to watch her grow, learn new things about herself, and meet new allies. There are many literary references in the story, as well as amusing references to today’s society. He had me laughing on the second page, and that lasted throughout the book with little gems here and there.

One thing I admire about his books is his ability to engage readers through a smooth plot line. The story just flows, rolling and scooping up readers as it goes. The characters are both enchanting and hilarious, leaving the reader to wonder what comes next.

Kudos to Mr. Silvers for an excellent, entertaining read!

Silvers continues his production line without a hitch, steamrolling another exceptional installment of his works out to readers and sculpting another segment of his universe into place with the usual myriad of small hints and subtle touches, adding more layers of mystique to the overall structure of the world's larger story beyond the scope of how even the characters themselves yet can see. The quality of writing continues to hold steady and while not as dramatic as some of his twists and turns in prior works, instead he baits the lead and leaves the reader to come shuffling along as he tugs at the reel little by little through the story.

A bit wrung out and confused, a bit wiser, and more than a little pissed off, protagonist Callie Penrose is challenged in her second literary outing in both the literal and metaphysical sense, facing dangers from without and within at the same time. Set between her first novel and the latest Nate Temple novel Wide Side, she is still uncertain as to many of the issues her encounter with Nate Temple drew to light, especially in regards to the elements that seem to be shared by the two of them and how much there is still unknown between them, in regards to what she knows of him and what she even knows of herself. We don't get too much insight beyond a few fleeting mentions here and there, but it is obvious that her path and Nate's are set to cross more than a few times in the future just yet beyond her appearance in Wild Side.

The pace of the novel executes quickly, but the contents are drawn out and develop slowly through the scope of Callie's perspective, much of the novel pertaining to her own introspection as she tackles hurdle after hurdle thrown her way. There is as mentioned anger, a slow boil that peaks at the novel's climax, but wrapped in hesitation, confusion, self-doubt and strained trust that rises and falls as she processes the things and people she encounters. Despite the supernatural happenings, the novel feels very much focused on Callie's sense of self in all too mundane and human ways.

That said the supernatural elements themselves are as prominent as ever, and Callie doesn't let her introspection get in the way of a fight. Encountering yet more elements of the supernatural world beyond what she knew, she encounters faces new to her and readers alike, some new to her but familiar to readers, and fresh perspective on some she'd already encountered before. It works as a slower, more subtle build to her place of importance within the plot and the local topography as it changes due to the events of the previous novel and events within Nate Temple's storyline. Even outside her direct spheres of influence, as the mundane human world is becoming more aware of the things that lurk in the dark and rally in fear and anger alike to denounce it. While not as overt as say, a war on a legion of Greek legends patroned by a Greek goddess, it sets a suitable scene and sense of tension for Callie and her friends.

The journey of self identity is steeped in the magical as much as pure introspection, as Callie is learning to embrace and expand the new, foreign powers within herself and how it fits in place with the image she already has of who she is and where she belongs in the scheme of things. It never reaches the point of internal or external crisis, instead putting a spotlight on the people close to her or those new to her who make dramatic impressions on her in the course of the novel, almost as mirrors revealing new facets to herself. She is not drastically altered by what she finds or the decisions she makes, instead standing as a resolute protagonist who rather is naturally growing into more of herself. In a genre where deus ex machina drop from the sky regularly and twists and turns can be graphed out ahead of time for most stories, it is refreshing to see a more organic take on the way a character develops themselves.

The climax itself is rather quick, but executed well and shows snapshots of Callie's potential as well as dropping more hints as to what might be behind many of the unanswered questions about herself. Rather than rolling right into her actions in Wild Side, it takes the time afterwards to have Callie get her house in order and lets her leave off on her own note rather than hopping right back onto the flow of Nate Temple's storyline. One of the concerns I'd had at some of her initial interactions with Nate was that their connection would become too tangible too quickly and result in too much of an overlap with one another in their series, but thus far Silvers has been of no mind to rush, letting their smaller encounters speak as much if not more so than their larger, longer engagements together and building things bit by bit for a rock solid foundation.

Overall the novel is quite simply another excellent installment in Silvers' overall works, and as usual I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next.

“Rage”, the second book in Shayne Silvers’ “Feathers and Fire” series which features Callie Penrose, a wizard in Kansas City, is another example of the authors’ brilliant writing. He sucks you into Callie’s world and her struggle for identity in a way that causes you to laugh, cry, think and cheer. Callie is a strong character who can kill an enemy without blinking an eye and then befriend a homeless person in the same day. Is Callie following her mentor in moral absolutes or letting evil consume her soul? In this story, Callie is dealing with the consequences of the actions of others and the impact on her life as well as discovering who her true parents were. You find yourself in Callie’s life, questioning everything, questioning what she believes or who to trust. Shayne introduces a few new characters that you instantly like or not. When he brings a certain well-known character to life, with his ties to artwork, you can’t help but smile and keep reading because you can’t stop. With every book by Shayne Silvers I read, the more he proves that he is the best kind of storyteller, the kind that triggers your imagination and entertains your heart. If you haven’t read any of his books, you are passing up the Michael Jordan of urban fantasy authors. The BEST.

Shayne Silvers just gets better! This is book 2 of a new series that bonds with his earlier series with Nate Temple as the main character who is a wizard. Rage is written in the first person so I feel like all that happens to Carrie and what the series say she says is happening to me or someone who gave me a diary! There are something attention gripping words and actions all the time! It is hard to know when to stop! Even at the end of a short ( there are no long) chapters, it's hard to keep from reading more especially to cook for family, or work, drive, etc. Lol. Rage is great! One moment just closed into the next in the adventures. It was easy to stay with her decisions and actions. There were surprises and twists along with smiles and uploading laughter. For a person who was just left at a church when young she has developed an amazing personality thanks to the author! I'm glad! I can't wait for the next book of Carrie Penrose in January though it seems so far away and of course Mr. Shayne Silvers left us some hints at the end of this book of Rage! Now all I'll do is try to find other books to read and wonder what will happen in the next Feathers and fire! Rage was Awesome! Will the next adventure be too? Let's all find out next January, 2018!

I was unsure about Callie to start with although Silvers' expert storytelling still kept me engaged through the first book. This book, she really started to grow on me, developing as a character through a compelling narrative. I'm now just as eager to see what happens with her as I am to check in on Nate Temple's latest adventures. Well done!

I started reading this series, for obvious reasons, (I LOVE NATE TEMPLE), and Callie Penrose kicks serious butt! I'm a stickler for reading books in order, so I'm back pedalling to the stories I missed. (while reading Nate's adventures in books 1-8)

This book fills in some of the blanks you'd expect in a sequel. I really enjoyed the first book and can't wait to jump right into book 3, here directly. It's a lazy Saturday, so reading till my eyes blur is acceptable. 😂 Part of me hopes there might be a movie or tv show, eventually, but either way, I'm keen to learn more about Callie, her parents, their reasons for abandoning her and everything else inbetween.

We meet new characters, Master Shayne never fails in this department, and I love the continuous story line. Oh! I can't wait to find out more information on D&D! Clapping with glee. Psst... I used to play that game, too. Telling my age now.😂 So if you 'are' looking for a brand new series to read, this is it!

This book was so good I don't know where to start! Book 2 see Callie Penrose continues to kick ass with her own special kind of sassy! On the hunt for a murderer she makes many new friends that are the authors usual kind of original! Look out for D&D you will adore them!

The story is fast paced with many twists and some shocking surprises! Claire gets a shock, Roland gets two new "daughters" and a man of the cloth gets a slap!

Rage is hilarious with a smatter of sarcasm, scenes that had my eyebrows at my hair line and some daft humour. It kept me occupied no end!

This is a must read for all type of reader!
