Editorial Reviews

Review

Lorilyn Roberts has painted an amazing picture of Biblical times. I could really feel what Daniel was feeling. What also appealed to me is the sprinkling of romance in The King when I wasn't expecting it. Roberts blends mystery, drama, history, romance, the Bible, and humor in a story that is entertaining and meaningful. - Courtney Grable, age 13

Lorilyn Roberts is an awesome storyteller with a wonderful imagination.
The King is easy to follow but is never predictable. I wanted to keep reading to find out what Daniel would find out next. - Cameron Presson, age 16

Worship‑that the world offers gold, fame, respect, and adoration to those foolish enough to fall for its temptations. Romance ‑ that we are God's temple and are to remain pure and undefiled by casual sexual relations. That God wants us to save ourselves for marriage. Ambition ‑ that pursuing personal desires and goals that do not consider Him first actually relegates Him to second in our lives, and that is to our detriment. Salvation ‑ that God offers the only way to be saved. - Ronald, Wakulla Book Review

Lorilyn Roberts has written a thrilling time travel story that will inspire young readers to look into themselves to discover their beliefs and their faith and to strengthen their passion to follow their God. This is a page-turning thriller, a coming-of-age time-travel fantasy that challenges a young man's faith and belief in God.

I have been looking for a good Christian Fiction book and this is one. I will not spoil it but this is what is missing in Pop culture. We can’t forget about God and we’re in danger of losing that now. How many children know about our Christian heritage?

First of all, as a non-fiction author myself I am in awe and envious of fiction writers, particularly novelists. As a non-fiction writer I get the advantage of building upon the well-established platform of a subject constructed by many writers before me. What amazes me about novelists is the ability to create characters, plot, setting, and dialogue out of thin air. Everything only exists in the imagination of the novelist before it appears on paper as a plausible story.
Secondly, in reviewing this book in the young adult fantasy genre I should be quick to point out that I am not a young adult. However I do fantasize often about being a young adult again; but I suspect that is not what is meant by the term young adult fantasy. In all seriousness, I'm still young at heart and I enjoyed Lorilyn Robert's exceptional book. And my enjoyment of the book also means that one does not have to be a teenager to enjoy this book. And I'll add to all that my opinion that this is a book that parents and young people could both read and enjoy discussing it.
Here is the challenge that I believe Roberts meets head-on and is successful: how to write historical fiction for young people that is both solid in its historical grounding and imaginative in its story telling. Historical fiction for young people can take some poetic liberty with details & facts, and can welcome fantasy, science fiction, romance, and magic. This can be especially true with Biblical history in which the narrative can be more of a summary than an elaboration.
In "The King" Roberts enables Daniel, a modern Israeli teenager, to time travel to 1st century Israel and experience adventures, danger, romance, and insight. Along the way some big questions get answered and a mystery is solved. But I believe good Christian fiction (and non-fiction) doesn't try to answer all the questions the protagonist has but leaves some necessary room for the character(s) to wrestle with the answers to the bigger questions which in turn invites the reader to engage the big questions also. Daniel must figure out for himself what is real and must figure how to convince others. It seems to me that is a lifelong task for teens and adults of any age-- to determine what is real and then strive to share the discovery. Roberts artfully gives her character Daniel a wonderful setting, a great supporting cast, and a grand journey to work out that personal mission.

What a wonderful surprise I received when I started reading The Seventh Dimension series. I appreciate the way the author has woven both spiritual and historical teaching into her writing. I enjoyed the opportunity to read this second book from a completely different perspective...that of Daniel's. I believe it added a lot to my overall excitement about the story. I am already looking forward to the next book in the series.

A story of a young Jewish youth trying to earn his way and get back home. Daniel is somehow "time warped" from modern time back to the days of Christ. He had wanted to go to medical school, so making the best of the situation he apprentices himself to Dr. Luke who recommends him for another job caring for a mute boy. Love interests along the way keep the spice going! One thing leads to another and he finds himself a charioteer--saving money for med school.right? Unfortunately, success often leads to jealousy and sabotage. But to find out what comes of that and the part Jesus, the King, plays in it all...you'll have to read the story! Excellent story...well written.

This is the second book in the Seventh Dimension series but it can definitely read as a standalone.

Daniel, a young boy who lives in Israel in the middle of a war, wishes to become a doctor. Although his family is Jewish, Daniel isn’t sure if he believes in God. Until something impossible happens. He opens a door and he is literally transported back to the time when Rome ruled and Jesus of Nazareth was alive. There he encounters his students, his followers and his haters but ultimately he witnesses his miracles. Daniel is left with a choice: believe what he sees or listen to the lies and the deception that will define his future.

I don’t usually read books like this one. Actually I generally avoid religion books but I was wrong about this one. Although there is a great deal of religion, it isn’t the main point. Daniel is transported to the Seventh Dimension not to believe in God but to believe in himself. To learn himself and make decisions that will affect his future. Daniel was such a courageous, brilliant and brave young man. He truly inspired me.

What I loved in this book though was the division between the people in that era. I loved seeing how people of that time responded to the events. I loved the way the author described the events.

A fantasy book about time travel, religion but mostly about insight and self awareness.

    Totally recommended!

Lorilyn Roberts second novel, The King, in the series of Seventh Dimension is an outstanding presentation of both fantasy and real life concerns of today's young adult reader. The creative traverse from the real world to fantasy is filled with a mix of modern day elements, like delving from the computer media world through Chariot racing in the historical era of Rome. The unusual aspect of this book is how the author has brought the Biblical story of Jesus, as King into the story without being confrontational. This a an exciting read. I found myself as an older adult, entering into the excitement of the story as I completed the read by using my Kindle edition. I'm highly anticipating the release of the next book.

Great book. Love time travel stories. This one is like walking through the streets of old, with its culture, lifestyles, and simplicity; yet with the usual human condition and struggles. Can't wait to read the rest.
