Sometimes the wrong choice can be just right . . .

Fun and fearless, Cora Lewis knows how to keep her tattooed "bad boy" friends at the Marked in line. But beneath all that flash and sass is a broken heart. Cora won't let herself get burned again. She's waiting to fall in love with the perfect man—a baggage-free, drama-free guy ready for commitment. Then she meets Rome Archer.

Rome Archer is as far from perfect as a man can be. He's stubborn, rigid, and bossy. And he's returned from his final tour of duty more than a little broken. Rome's used to filling many roles: big brother, doting son, supersoldier—but none of those fit anymore. Now he's just a man trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life while keeping the dark demons of war and loss at bay. He would have been glad to suffer through it alone, until Cora comes sweeping into his life and becomes a blinding flash of color in a sea of gray.Perfect may not be in the cards, but perfectly imperfect could just last forever . . .

He is a boy in a warrior’s body, caged behind a steel wall of denial and fear.
5 out of 5 stars
He is a boy in a warrior’s body, caged behind a steel wall of denial and fear.
Right up front, the biggest victory for me with Rome was the cover! I LOVE this cover and not only because there is this babe with crystal blue eyes gazing up at me, but it is the only cover so far in the Marked Men novels that I find looks like the characters described in the book. That aside, I highly recommend (actually it is a must) reading the first two books in this series: Rule and Jet. Rome is the type of guy who always had a certain role in the lives of those he loved. After he returned from war and his family dynamic had taken a drastic turn after events in his late brother’s life are brought to the surface, Rome doesn’t know what his role is anymore and he is lost. He is a boy in a warrior’s body, caged behind a steel wall of denial and fear. Rome’s attitude is a dark cloud that soaks those that stand too close to him. But Cora won’t stand by any longer while Rome treats those that love him horribly and decides to give him a taste of his own medicine by dousing him with beer and spits out what she really thinks of him and his broodiness. Cora is a spitfire in a pixie’s body. Just over 5 foot, covered in tats, with short spiky blonde hair, she is a force to be reckoned with when she goes in to protective mode. Cora can’t stand the beautiful giant and how he makes Shaw cry or pisses off his remaining brother or how he just drowns everyone in misery with him. Rome soon realizes the little pixie is a handful and not much will take her down or dim her light. Until he witnesses, first hand, the one thing, or person rather, that shattered her and has had her living in fear the last five years. Cora and Rome are both broken souls for different reasons, but they soon discover the same thing will fix them; their desire and honesty. As Cora and Rome embark on a new mission of trying to heal the other, they find themselves overcoming obstacles that lesser men and women would have ran from, and sinking into holes they never wanted to come across again. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) used to be a taboo topic, but more and more people in society are talking about it and programs are springing up to help soldiers when they return from war. However, there still isn’t enough being done for these warriors, especially if they think they can handle it all on their own. Jay Crownover touches on this heavily through Rome and the internal battles he wages post-war and how they manifest in his everyday life. Jay highlights the catastrophic effects of PTSD when it goes untreated. This is why I love Brite’s role in this book. Brite is exactly who Rome needs, but he isn’t the answer to what ails Rome. Rome is a story that made my heart race, my brow furrow, and my eyes leak. Rome and Cora are both characters that I came to admire, condemn, then love and love and love again. Strong people in their own ways, they fill the void for the other and we can only hope that we find someone in our lives that could do half of what Cora and Rome did for each other. An Absolute Must Read! #BookReviews @ fictionmusings.com

5 HUGE stars for Rome. I love the Marked Men series. Jay Crownover writes captivating stories with engaging characters. The writing flows so easily and the dual POV we get is awesome. I love seeing the development of the plot through both characters eyes. Crownover writes from the male and female perspective flawlessly. The family of Marked Men and their ladies that she has created will draw you in and make you want to stay and hang out for a long time. Her sense of family is something that is intrinsic to each of these characters whether it started out as friendships or not. The Marked family is a loyal, charismatic, funny, stubborn, colorful cast of characters that you can’t help but enjoy their stories of redemption and triumph even with the scary bumps along the way.

Cora is a great heroine. She’s broken hearted and guarded to a fault. But, she’s feisty, spunky, loyal, and a kind soul. Cora worships her friends and would do anything for them. I loved her character and the development of her throughout the entire book. She sees something in Rome that she can’t deny and as their feelings grow she begins to change before she even realizes its happening. Cora recognizes that Rome is fearful and fiercely works to protect him and heal him. In doing so, she fails to recognize the fear that is inside of her. Rome is a broken soul. He’s trapped in his own mind and confused about where he fits into the dynamic of their group and his family group. Cora brings color, beauty, and patience to his life. I absolutely loved reading from Rome’s POV. His progression through the book is so satisfying and heartwarming. Rome is a ‘gentle giant’ and all his actions toward Cora prove this in more ways than one. I loved reading about him. Through some emotional scenes and heated tension their story is really one of redemption. The reverence they hold for each other is vital to each of them. The colorful and detailed descriptions the author provides for both of them make you feel like they’ve really found something ethereal in each other. Neither is who the other ever dreamed of and it’s their story so much brighter and uplifting.

In Rome, we’re introduced to the character of Brite. Without giving anything away, he and Rome become very close and Brite mentors Rome in a silent, mysterious way. I adored this character and though he was great for Rome’s character development. We also get a heavy dose of Rome and Rule’s relationship, which I loved. It can be volatile and misinterpreted but at the heart of it these are two brothers who need and respect each other. Another interesting aspect of this book is the kinship between Rome and Asa. All the other secondary characters are back and do not disappoint. We see Rule and Shaw, Jet and Ayden, Nash, and Rowdy. I cannot wait to get my hands on Nash’s book. He’s an enigmatic character whose life gets more mysterious and flips on its axis at the end of Rome and I cannot wait to see where Crownover takes these characters next.

I read this series from beginning to end – no breaks. Having read Built (Saints of Denver, #1) the mention of previous characters and some story lines that obviously had been started in the Marked Men series had me wanting to go back and read it. I am so glad I did as I had not only missed a great series but also meeting many of the secondary characters and their issues which is who the Saints of Denver is about. This series mainly takes place around a Tattoo shop where a man called Uncle Phil took in a group of men who were walking the line and gave them a job and purpose.

As I read these back to back I am going to write one review for them all. This is what I call an ensemble series – each book builds on the next one. Each book does have its own couple that get their HFN/HEA but some things started in one book may not get a resolution until another.

Rule (Marked Men #1) – This book is one that starts a side plot/story that isnt finished until the 3rd book in the series. The Archer family had three boys – oldest Rome and twins Rule and Remy. Even though Rule and Remy were identical twins they couldnt be more different. Remy was the good one and Rule broke all the rules. Shaw Landon entered their lives when she was 13 and they became her surrogate family. Shaw and Remy were very close but Rule is the one she has secretly loved since first meeting him. Even though they are all adults now Rule is still wild and out of control. That got worse when Remy died. Remy's death fractured the Archer family and Shaw is doing her best to try and keep it together. She does not succeed. But Rule finally see's her and does his best to try and make up for his past and be the man she deserves.

Jet (Marked Men #2) - Jet Keller doesnt work at the Tattoo shop but he is good friends with the men who work there. He is the lead singer of a band and writes songs for both his band and others. He is very talented but has refused to leave town to expand his career due to trying to protect his mother from his father. Problem is she doesnt want his help and has no plans of ever leaving him. Ayden Cross (best friend of Shaw) is a woman with ugly past she doesnt want anyone to find out about. She left her past behind in Kentucky and wants to just finish college. One thing she doesnt want is the attraction she has for Jet. He tempts her inner bad girl too much and scares her that she could easily go back to that person she is trying so hard to forget. In this one we met her brother Asa who has no redeeming qualities (until his book which is the last in the series)

Rome (Marked Men #3) – Rome we met in his brother book. He has always been the glue in the family and in on his 8th year of 10 in the Army. During that book he didn't deal well with a family secret when its revealed and that left him estranged with his family. When he gets done with his last tour and leaves the Army he is lost and suffering from PTSD and dealing with all his demons in a bottle and being angry at the world. Cora Lewis runs the front desk of the Tatoo shop along with doing body modifications. She is a fouled mouth take no crap little pixie who also plays the role of momma bear. These two were an odd pairing but fit together perfectly once they worked through some big issues.

Nash (Marked Men #4) – This was the weakest of books to me. Neither Nash who works at the tattoo shop and Saint Ford who is a ER nurse were as interesting as the other characters but it does introduce us to Royal Hastings a cop that is the main heroine in the last book of the series.

Rowdy (Marked Men, #5) - I think this was my favorite book because it introduced us to the cast of characters that are in the new series Saints of Denver. Rowdy ended up in foster care at a early age after his mother died. The foster home was next door to Salem and Poppy Cruz. Salem's father was a fire and brimstone Texas preacher that was a tyrant at home. Rowdy, Salem and Poppy all became close with Rowdy putting all his hopes and dreams into them. When Salem who is a couple years older finally takes all she can take with her father and leaves home she breaks Rowdy's heart and he then hitches all his happiness on Poppy. That also ends in heartbreak and now as a grown man Rowdy still uses his broken heart over the Cruz sisters and a reason to never thinking he will ever find the one. When Uncle Phil on his deathbed decides to play matchmaker and offers Salem the position of running a new Tattoo branch she waste no time in taking the job hoping to get a fresh start with Rowdy. Problem is he wants nothing to do with her. But its not long before these two start a sexual relationship but trust is a huge issues between them and when Poppy shows up in bad shape all the secrets from years ago come to light. I cannot wait for Poppy's story which will be told in the Saints of Denver series. She soo deserves a HEA. This is where we also meet Zeb Fuller and Sayer Cole (Rowdy's sister) who are the couple in Built (Saints of Denver, #1)

Asa (Marked Men, #6) - Asa Cross has gone through quite the transformation from the book Jet. He was almost killed and since coming out of a coma is trying to live on the right side of the law. Rome took a chance on him and gave him a job as a bartender. Asa beats himself up a lot through out this book and doesn't think he is worthy of happiness and thinks he is just one con away from returning to his old self. Royal Hastings is the cop we met in Nash's book and she has always had the hots for Asa but he turns her down every time. After her childhood friend who also happens to be her partner on the force is shot multiple times Royal goes into a tailspin over the guilt. Asa finally gives into Royal but doesn't know how a cop and an ex criminal are going to work out.

Through out each of the books we get previous couples weddings and births of children. Every book had great epilogue. I really enjoyed this series and this author is defiantly a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars All roads lead to Rome...
Reviewed in Germany on January 10, 2014
“Rome”, the third book in the Marked Men series is yet another hit for Jay Crownover.

It is darker and more serious than the previous books, yet it is just as sexy, spunky and touching.

While Rule and Jet were tattooed, trouble-making bad boys, Rome is a straight-laced, honourable ex-soldier that is trying to come to terms with his life as a civilian – feeling out of place and lost. Though he has left the battlefield behind, he is still at war – with himself, his family, his friends, his guilt, his future and his past. He is a tortured soul that is threatened to be consumed by darkness. Unable to control his emotions, he ends up hurting the ones that love him unconditionally and that want to help him.

That is where Cora steps in. Not one to keep her mouth shut when she sees her friends being treated badly,s he give Rome a piece of her mind and makes her point by giving him a beer shower. She is not scared of his crappy attitude or the darkness surrounding him. And this is exactly what draw him to her – her calling things as she sees them. She is colorful, vibrant and strong. Used to speaking her own mind and living according to her own rules, she can be quite a handful. But she is also loving, caring and loyal to a fault. For her friends, whom she considers her family she would sacrifice everything. Despite all her sparkle and shine, she carries shadows from her past that make it hard for her to trust and to believe in love. Yet she can’t help being magically drawn to Rome.

The two couldn’t be more opposite if they tried and at the same time they are very alike. This leads to an intense and breath-taking chemistry. When they hit it off, it couldn’t have been any more sensual. It was so raw, so emotional, so full of vulnerability and despair, yet so erotic and hot that my hormones went bats*** crazy. But what they had was so much more than just sexual, so much more than just primal desire. Their need for each other, the urge to feel connected, to feel rooted, made it breath-taking. And that was just their first time. Let me tell you, it didn’t get any less hot.

While Rule & Shaw, as well as Jet & Ayden had a lot of back and forth before really going into a relationship, Cora and Rome are close from the start and fate makes sure they have more than enough reason to make it work. But man, a lot work it was. Between the demons that were haunting Rome and the fear of having her heart broken, that kept Cora on her toes, their relationship was constantly tested. And so was my poor blood pressure. With every step they took forward, something come up to push them back.

I loved Rome’s character. He was strong but capable of showing feeling without the fear of being weak. And Cora is such a sweet broken girl. Watching their relationship develop, go through the ups and downs was amazing and moving. As was the support that they, but especially Rome was getting. This group is such a tight-knit unit, that it made me jealous of the friendship and love they share for each other. They are there for one another no matter what. And so is Brite, the person that throws Rome the life-line he so desperately needs. A soft-hearted tough guy that play a big role in saving Rome from himself.

By the time Rome gets his act together and Cora realizes she loves him, it might just be too late as destiny is a miserable little bitch and tragedy strikes yet again.

Will their love survive? Will they get their happily ever-after? Read to find out and emerge into the Marked Men world. Trust me, you will not want to return to your own.

Jay Crownover created another masterpiece that is serious and sexy, passionate and funny, emotional and touching.

    5+ healing, forever marked stars.

Well the lovely Jay has done it again! I was so excited about Rome's story and was the best way to start 2014, Loved it. Rome has been one of my fave characters in this series and it really delivered, big brother Rome had always been a bit of a enigma and this book opened him up and we got to know him warts and all, his story was so heartfelt and told so well, ptsd is a serious problem for soldiers and was told in a really respectful and real way, amazing! Cora is a kick ass chick and is Rome's perfect match, she is such a fireball and funny. Loved the updates on the rest of the gang. Rule is still the best book boyfriend ever and no one can compare to him but Rome is still a gorgeous hunk of a man who is perfect in an imperfect way. There is a bit in the book where Rome speaks with Remy and it made me cry it was so lovely. Recommend, it is a must read for 2014.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jay Crownover sait décidément comment nous rendre accro !
Reviewed in France on May 13, 2016
Jay Crownover sait décidément comment nous rendre accro !
