Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him...even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying.

This book was so good! It has to be my favorite book by Jay Crownover. I think I highlighted 75% of the book because the writing was amazing. This book is a road trip story and a homecoming story rolled into one.

Dixie is an always-smiling, sweet and happy waitress in Rome's bar. She is always the first person to offer help or kind words to anyone else, but rarely does anyone give the same to her. Church has worked in the bar for 6 months after returning from being stationed overseas in the military. Dixie has been interested in Church since she met him. She knew he was the one for her when, one night after some customers got handsy and sassy with her, he was the only person to ever ask her if she was okay. Dixie has always believed in true love and there being only one person out there for every person, based on her parents and sister's relationships. But she doesn't think Church likes her. He has never returned her advances, treating her life a friend, because of his past and not feeling like he has anything to give in a relationship. But he is called back home when an elderly family friend gets hurt. He finally must return to Mississippi to face his past and the family he left behind after being gone for ten years. He asks Dixie to come with him for support. Over the course of their trip, Church and Dixie get to know each other better and realize how much they fit together. Their love story is sweet, sexy and emotional.

I loved Dixie and Church! I loved Dixie's sunny attitude. She was a breath of fresh air. She didn't have a perfect life, but you would never know from meeting her. She was strong and sweet. I admired and identified with her so much. She didn't know much about Church at first, but as she got to know him more, she saw the hurt and pain in him and wanted to help heal him. Church was the strong silent type. He had been through so much, from losing his mother and stepmother, to trauma and strife when in the military, to his childhood where he never felt like he fit in because he was biracial. He deserved the sunshine that Dixie brought into his life, but it took him awhile to see it. They were really perfect together. Church knew how special Dixie was and he had to be brave enough to take the risk of getting close enough to her, even though he had lost two women he loved already (in his mother and stepmother) and was afraid to lose another. But he realized he already loved Dixie and there was no way he could let her go. I very much enjoyed watching them fall in love and seeing the growth they both went through together.

Their chemistry was amazing. The sex scenes were hot and different! The sizzling scene outside the bar was amazing. And there is a sexy and inventive scene involving a weight bench that was scorching too. The connection, physically and emotionally, was very strong.

I loved the road trip aspect and the coming-home-to-Church's-small-hometown aspect. I loved the side characters, especially his brother and stepfather. I can't think of anything I disliked about this book. It was that good. And that's rare for me because I'm a picky reader.

    My favorite quotes:

"I was used to guarding my heart but somehow she had slipped under those ironclad defenses and embedded some of her optimism and unshakable belief in the territory inside of me I thought was toxic and contaminated. Everything needed sunlight and care to flourish and grow. Dixie had both in spades and was relentless in her quest to turn my insides from something barren and lifeless into something that flourished and thrived with light and color."

    ***

"Fair warning before we fall into that bed together, if you put your hands and your mouth on me, Church, I'm going to want more. My stupid heart is going to spin big dreams that lock you and me together forever even though my head knows better. You gave me the little bit you just did and I can already feel every single piece of me wanting to gobble it up and demand more. I'm happy right now, but if you take me to bed and make me feel special I won't be happy when I realize that isn't true. I'd rather stay happy and if I had to guess I would bet you want to stay happy, too." Her lips twitched and she leaned into me, "Well, as happy as a big, broody soldier and prodigal son can get."

    ***

"Fear can make a smart man do very hurtful things, but eventually the heart wins out because fear is fleeting and love lasts forever."

    ***

"There was one fall he couldn't prevent or help me up from. That was the fall that had started when I walked into the bar and felt the warmth of the sun after what felt like a lifetime spent in the frigid cold. Slipping, sliding, skidding, tripping, tumbling, flailing... falling in love with Dixie Carmichael. "

    ***

I have to admit that I had overlooked this book prior to reading it, because after having read the other books in the series, I was really looking forward to book 4, Poppy and Wheeler's book. I am so happy that I got to read this book. Dixie and Church's story was so sweet and heart-warming that I will be thinking about it for a long time. It is the best book I have read in quite a while. I very much look forward to more from the Saints of Denver and more from Ms. Crownover!

I really loved this one. Romance, unrequited lov, a road trip, small southern towns and a bit of a mystery all rolled into one with another hot southern charmer in the Denver crew. Church is close to the main Marked Men because he is friends with all of them but especially with Rome as they served together in the Army. I loved that we didn't get the hints of Church's true story until the story really began on their way out of Denver. I also loved that Jay recognized that there are instances where it really sucks to travel deeper into the heartland, and even had instances of scenarios where as a black person int he US we notice things that the white person traveling with us might not even be aware of.

This is Church's story and Church shared with us his hunt for finding a place as a biracial child in a small town that isn't always as open and forgiving as some like to think. We see instances of the camaraderie of a community as well as the instances of coldness with yo are clearly other. I loved that even in these moments there were moments of acceptance for Church by the people who matter most.

    Con of the story:
The mystery wasn't fully formed; it was a bit of just background noise ; it didn't have me at the edge of the seat. I guessed pretty early who it was (huge mystery reader, so yeah). The reveal still made me nervous because Jay isn't afraid to make our characters hurt and badly too. But damn that was still unhinged and just dang why?? Why are people so horrible??

    Pros of the story:

The well developed characters. I threw a challenge out there when I read Better When He's Bad, asking authors to create complex characters and make them black, we have the same issues you do, we may not talk about it as openly but we still have the, our motivations aren't any different from yours, an we all then to want the same things for ourselves and our families (you know the ones of us who aren't garbage human beings) and she answered by giving us a good strong story with great characters and well rounded and developed story lines. The characters motivations were complex and felt realistic to how a teenager would react, to how many of us "adults" react to having our hearts broken. Hell some of us are still working through shyt from childhood, so yeah I get him being so closed off.

I loved that Church's reasons were just as complex and convoluted as any of the other characters in the series. He wasn't any kind of stereotype and I loved that even though his home life wasn't pretty it wasn't for any stereotypical reasons.

My favorite is realizing that Dixie's motivations were just as complex as Church's, she hid hers better but she was just as in need of self care as he was. I loved their love. I loved her sparkle and I loved that he saw her for who she was; I loved that his family recognized how much harder it is to be happy in the face of all that pain and that he cherished her even when he tried to deny their love. Dixie was willing to love Church even when he didn't believe he deserved it, and when she realized he couldn't give her what she wanted she decided she was worth more, and I loved her so much for that. It's one thing to say you love someone and allow them to destroy you and end up hating them and yourself in the end it's another to love them from afar. I loved that Dixie gave herself the space to make her decisions but knew that she was going to have a time when she was going to make a real choice.

Jay wrote that she might revisit the town. I hope she does because I would love to see more from his family including his dad. Can't wait for our other couples that are being shown, especially Wheeler's story. I can't wait until we get more from her sister as well. I hope we get it soon unless they are going to solve her sister's issues in Wheeler's story as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dixie a wonderful warm character that sees good in all falls for ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 17, 2017
Not really in Denver, but starts there. Dixie a wonderful warm character that sees good in all falls for a sullen dark character known there as Church, who's real name for is Dashel Churchill. Due to life circumstance a return to Church's home town of Lowry is necessary after a decade's absence . With Dixie being his not so true reason for not returning. Dixie is a Lady that wants a HEA, but has trouble, so goes on Internet dates. With startling outcomes. This is a very powerful love story, with two characters that obviously love each other, but neither realise the other does! Church is a warm , dark, somber, loyal character, whom you instantly feel sympathy and yearn to heal. Dixie is multi-coloured and vibrant in personality. Mystery, murder, racism and family upsets abound in this story. The intrigue, suspense and romance is breath takingly beautiful. All these stories are fantastic and well worth a read. You don't have to read the other stories, this wonderful author has written, but previous characters are mentioned, and it is great to catch up with. Worth all of 5stars

Church & Dixie altro capitolo della serie Saint of Denver! Buona lettura!

Dixie the happy, upbeat girl realizes that Church is 'the one' for her - Church just has to let go of his past to see that she is all that he needs to make his life a good one.
This book has given me such a good feeling.
