A Penny for Your Thoughts Kindle Edition
Have you ever loved, been loved, been confused about love, or suffered from loss of love? All these feelings have been captured and shared in the word of heartfelt poems, compiled over many years by a retired teacher and award-winning author.
Sherrill S. Cannon now shares her thoughts in this book of feelings. “As a teacher, I used poetry to help counsel many troubled teens and friends, and have continued this pattern throughout the years.”
There are three sections in her book: Heads, Spinning, and Tails . . . (Love & Loss: Coin Toss?). The variety of lyrical poetry forms includes free verse, blank verse, haiku, and sonnets. Some poems are simply plays on words.
About the Author:
Sherrill S. Cannon, a former teacher and grandmother of ten, is the author of nine acclaimed rhymed children’s stories that have received 48 national and international book awards between 2011 and 2017. Review
by Sherrill S. Cannon - Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Co.book review by Michael Radon - The US Review of Books"For if I knew ahead of time, then I
Would live my life according to its end;
And never give the present, time to try"This collection of poetry examines love, as so much poetry tends to do, but the perspective here is unique. That romantic euphoria and devastating heartbreak are seen as two sides of the same emotion. Split up into three sections, the first and third are polar in their approach, either bubbling with affection or profound in examining what was lost or what was never had to begin with. The middle section offers a little bit of both, tying in experiences that are related to being in love or emotions that come along with a relationship or marriage. The poems themselves also cover a variety of forms, ranging from free verse to sonnets and concrete poetry to haiku. Containing over 100 poems, the poet's musings on an aspect of life that tends to be powerful no matter how it's experienced will emotionally reach readers of all ages.
This volume is singular in its focus but powerfully broad in its approach and form. By taking just the idea of love and then presenting it from both a positive and negative perspective, or by applying different poetic constructs to it, the results end up significantly varied and stay fresh. Most poems occupy a single page with only the longer forms stretching to a second, and so readers are encouraged to enjoy at whatever pace suits them best. Love's prominence as a subject for poetry owes to both the strength at which it is experienced as well as the universality of it, as everyone experiences it in various ways. The author's ability to look at it and present it in so many different ways speaks to her skill as a poet and her deep understanding of the emotional spectrum.

A Penny for Your Thoughts explores love and friendship, related emotions, and heartache and anguish...and will appeal strongly to those who venture into reading poetry for the first time...Fall is the cleverest, literally falling from "The geese are flying South again" to "S", the point at the bottom of gradually shortening lines. Every reader will have favorites. Forever Love...is a heart-breaker that compares love to a butterfly, delicate and easily destroyed. A Penny for Your Thoughts is a true coffee-table book; it has a poem somewhere within it for everyone. Sarah Stuart for Readers' Favorite
A Penny for Your Thoughts is a collection of poems about love, letting go, and loss, as well as a few more core themes and the poems explored throughout the book, are all of a different nature. This is because the poems are in haiku form, as well as sonnet and even free verse form and this book lovers is rare to come across! Most poetry books only focus on one style of poetry but A Penny for Your Thoughts features them all, and they are all excellently written... There are many poems in A Penny for Your Thoughts which I loved but one of my favorites was 'Does Memory Last', and this is a poem about losing a loved one or when we are facing death, and this poem for me struck me the hardest because it was poignant as well as thought-provoking and an extraordinary poem. Another favorite of mine was called 'To See The Future' and this poem was all about if we had the ability to look into the future, but Sherrill explains through her beautiful poem that this would not be good because we would no longer be focused on the present and feeling emotions such as love, grief, sorry and so much more and this was an incredible poem I could see schools analysing in literature class. The poems laced throughout A Penny for Your Thoughts are so brilliant and unique that I have not been able to stop thinking about them... Aimee Ann -RedheadedBookloverBlog

About the author

I am a mother of four and a grandmother of ten, and I am also a Multi-Award-Winning Best-Selling Author! My books have received 107 National and International awards in 2011-2023.. My newest children's book, "My Fingerpaint Masterpiece Coloring Book" has just been released and is a coloring book version of my award-winning "My Fingerpaint Masterpiece". It uses the theme of the infamous 'Emperor's New Clothes' to emphasize the theme of art is in the eye of the beholder! My previous release is the still available "My Little Angel Coloring Book", dedicated to our son KC who passed in 2022, and who is now our special angel. It is a great introduction to pre-schoolers, dealing with issues such as getting ready for school, crossing in cross-walks, being kind to friends, learning lessons, fastening seatbelts, stranger danger, and more - all of which accompanied by illustrations for the child to color. It follows "The Golden Rule Coloring Book", already an award-winner, which is a coloring book version of the best-selling The Golden Rule. The fourth coloring book version is the "Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book" which is a coloring book version of my still available best-selling "Peter and the Whimper-Whineys" and has already received several awards including First Place in the FAPA Awards, Gold in Book Excellence Awards and an H.M.in the Royal Dragonfly and Purple Dragonfly Awards for Children's Activity Book. "David's ADHD", is a recipient of 13 Awards including a Gold medal in the Book Excellence Awards, 1st place in Purple Dragonfly plus an HM, Gold Medal in FAPA Awards,1st Place the Purple Dragonfly Awards plus H.M.in a 2nd category, 2 Silver medals from Feathered Quill, Winner of Barefoot Librarian Award plus Silver medal in Reviewer's Choice, Bronze Medal in eLit Awards, and a Pinnacle Achievement Award. What an amazing time!!! My website is www.sherrillcannon.com
I have been writing poetry since before I could write! (My mother wrote down the poetry I wrote as a four-year-old.) I have written ten published rhymed children's stories, two poetry books, and three coloring books, as well as seven published rhymed musical plays for elementary school children, which have been performed internationally in over 20 countries. I love to write. My friends and family ask me if I think in rhyme and meter, and I have to admit that sometimes this is true!
Most of my books try to teach something, like good manners and caring for others. "Santa's Birthday Gift" is an attempt to include Santa in the meaning of Christmas. (After I read a story of the nativity to my young granddaughter, she looked at me and asked "But where's Santa?") The story is best for ages 3-9, to be read to children who still believe in Santa!
"Peter and the Whimper-Whineys" is designed to help parents cope with whining and complaining children. Peter is a small rabbit who does nothing but whine. His mother warns him that if he keeps on whining and crying, he'll have to go live with the Whimper-Whineys. His nocturnal adventures convince him his mother was right! If only he can get back home... A review editor for this story wrote: "I cannot imagine any parent or guardian not wanting to read this book to their child!...Parents everywhere applaud you!"
"Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book" as well as "The Golden Rule Coloring Book" and "My Little Angel Coloring Book", are replicas of the above books, with the illustrations traced so they are colorable.
"The Magic Word" is a story of a little girl who has to learn to say Please! It stresses the importance of good manners and thinking of others.
"Gimme-Jimmy", is a story about how a bully learns to share, and seems to have become popular quickly! Jimmy's New Polite Rule stresses thinking of others and being polite.
"Manner-Man" is about a Superhero who helps children cope with bullies, and look within themselves for their own inner superhero. It incorporates many of the characters in m previous books, as well as their character traits. Consideration for others is a constant theme!
"My Fingerpaint Masterpiece" deals with perspective, perception and self-esteem as a child paints artwork in class, and later discovers it as part of the town's Art Contest
"Mice & Spiders & Webs...Oh My!" is story that illustrates the importance of being a good listener. It also is a cute introduction to basic computer terms.
"The Golden Rule" shows children how to be kind, and to imagine how wonderful it would be if everyone followed the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you'd like to be treated.
"My Little Angel" is about the day in the life of a small child who has a little guardian angel named Angela sitting on her shoulder and guiding her through her day. With an angel on your shoulder, you are never alone!
"A Penny for Your Thoughts" is not a children's book, but it is a poetry book of feelings - of love and friendship and all various associated emotions.
"A Dime is a Sign" is a companion volume of poetry to A Penny for Your Thoughts, with similar content and layout - all about feelings into words!
"David's ADHD" is designed to help children with ADHD learn to manage their behavior issues and become accepted in the classroom...and make friends!
"Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book", "The Golden Rule Coloring Book", "My Little Angel Coloring Book" and the new "My Fingerpaint Masterpiece Coloring Book" are all coloring book versions of the original books above, but with the illustrations traced so that youngsters (and oldsters) can color them creatively.
Here's a little bit of my background: A real-live Eloise, I grew up in the Willard Hotel in Washington DC (my Dad was the manager), was married and lived in Northern Virginia for twenty years where my husband and I raised our four children. We later moved to Bucks County (Philadelphia PA suburbs) where we lived for 14 years before moving to the Binghamton NY area for 18 years, and in 2013 finally moved back to Bucks County PA. We will celebrated our 62nd wedding anniversary in June! We are now retired, and are snowbirds, traveling in our RV from Florida to Pennsylvania and back. I have had a varied career: I was a teacher and coach for ten years in the Washington DC area, and then became a "stay-at-home-Mom" who in my spare-time was a professional newspaper sports photographer and columnist for several years when our boys were playing competitive soccer. When our girls became interested in theater, I became a Dinner Theatre Company Stage Manager (as well as lighting and sound technician) and also was an Assistant Talent Manager for Cathy Parker Talent when our youngest daughter was doing commercials and professional modeling in NYC. When we relocated to the Binghamton NY area, I became the Business Administrator for a software development company handling payroll and contracts. Now I have time to write, when I'm not marketing (which is the other half of writing.) I spent many years collaborating with my daughter on rhymed musical plays for her elementary school, and now seven of our plays, "Have You Seen My Little Lamb", "The King's Spell","When You Wish Upon a Star...fish", "The Wonderful World of Weather", "ABC December" , "The Alphabet Trip" and "We Have Character" are available at Lazy Bee Scripts - www.lazybeescripts.co.uk. The plays have already had many performances in over 20 countries including the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as Australia, Austria, Botswana, Cambodia, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. I am trying to "make a difference".

- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2018Award-winning children’s author, Sherrill S. Cannon, released her new endeavor about life and love in her debut poetry book, “A Penny For Your Thoughts,” which received a five-star review from Reader’s Favorite. This thoughtful book of one-hundred fifty-four poems is simply the most beautiful presentation describing the heart and anguish exploring love and friendship. Thoughts of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her sensitive sonnets of love and deeply felt emotions are shadows in Cannon’s poems. The lovely style of blending and weaving words evoke the range of sentiments. The poetry touches on topics of age, youth, nature, and love with deep encounters with oneself such as “My Tree” and the following excerpt from the “Frozen Wasteland.”
“I was living in a wasteland⸺
Where nothing new would grow,
Except to just grow older
Underneath the freezing snow”
The last part of the poem brings joy, “But you came to me and took me From the Winter of my heart.”
Ms. Cannon shares her thoughts about the evolution in writing this book of profoundly absorbing poems. “As a teacher, I used poetry to help counsel many troubled teens and friends, and have continued this pattern throughout the years.” You can see the pain and intense depth of these conversations in the lines of the various poems.
She artfully divided her book into three sections: Heads⸺ Of Love and Friendship, Spinning⸺ Of Related Emotions, and Tails of Heartache and Anguish. Could love result in a coin toss? The variety of poetic forms includes the free verse, blank verse, haiku, and sonnets. Some poems are merely her playful interpretation of words.
A sensitive work and a must read!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2018In years past, poetry was written and enjoyed by many, today there is the idea, including among some professors, (who I have heard say, they don’t understand poetry.) That insinuates that a good or great poem is something that is indecipherable to most.
I am not one of them, as with great poets, such as Maya Angelou, Robert Stevenson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, there is a story in the poems, a sense of place and emotion flowing through the verses. ‘A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS,’ by Sherrill S. Cannon is one such book.
It is rich in emotion, stories flow through the verses, and tales of love and loss are ripe within its pages. It is a glorious book that should be savored from start to finish and this reader feels that one would have to be devoid of life experience not to find many in this book that do not strike a cord deep inside of them.
Ms. Cannon’s poetry takes on the issues of grief, dying, being the object of idolatry, as, in her poem Pedestal, love, loss, and letting go. A magnificent journey through life.
A few of those that struck a deep chord in me was ‘Pedestals,’ That tells us the tale of someone who is stuck upon a pedestal and cannot become truly human for fear of losing their love. ‘The Real Me,’ that speaks of the little part of oneself that is seldom if ever shown to anyone. ‘To See The Future,’ shows us all that we might lose if we could see the future. For we would no longer be living in the present, the joy, sorrow, love, grief, beauty, and glory of life would be forever shaded with the knowledge of what’s to come. ‘Does Memory Last,’ a question each of us may ponder, when we lose a loved one or are facing death. ‘Old Woman,’ is a poignant look at the young woman that exists in all, under the veil of wrinkles and aging.
There were so many poems in this book that touched cords deeply within me, as to bring smiles to my lips, joy to my heart, thoughtfulness to my mind and grief inside of me.
A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS is an astoundingly, wonderous trip through the thoughts, life, and emotions we all go through in life.
In the pages of this book, everyone will find something that will help them grow or understand themselves better. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2017My daughters and I have read all of Sherrill S. Cannon’s previously published children’s titles. Her knack for using rhyming verse to reinforce children’s values and good manners is excellent. In her new book of poetry, “A Penny for Your Thoughts”, Cannon continues to entertain readers using her poetic story weaving skills. Her poetry runs the full gamut of emotions, from friendship and love to grief and loss, and every feeling in between. Her style of poetry is easy to understand for even those who may not normally enjoy poetry, as Cannon puts her heart and soul into her poetry, allowing others to envision her sensitive words as they pertain to their own lives. As a nature lover, I found her poems with a nature theme to be especially engaging. No matter where you’re at in your life, you’ll find several poems in this diverse collection of poems to relate to your own life or simply enjoy on their own merit!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2018Ms. Cannon's entry into poetry is exquisite in feeling and in its delivery with the voice from its words. It is a poetry book that should be gifted this Valentine Day to everyone with whom you want to share the heartfelt thoughts from the multi-talented award winning author of children's books. Poetry guided the author to help counsel troubled teens throughout her teaching career. This lovely book includes verse from various forms of poetry and delivers a warmth from the depths of winter in one of the verses. The poems are lovely and giving from the heart. Read the poems and feel the emotions of love, hope, joyful memories and human experience. This is a book of poetry to experience.
