About the author

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To make up for this tragic error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains from a small office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their rescued cats and dogs. - Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 20171873, U.S.A. This clean, western, historical, and romantic novella by Author Caroline Clemmons, deserves 5 stars for being realistic and filled with historic information! The storyline of a well-off woman, Lydia, from a very small town in Texas noticing a lack of marriageable young women for the young bachelors in town, and doing something about it, is clever. Lorraine Stuart "escapes" the East Coast and arrives in Tarnation, Texas, with a secret. Grant Pettigrew is the Editor and owner of the only newspaper in the County, and is immediately attracted to Lorraine. She is also "drawn to him as if he were a magnet", but they will not have an easy time of it, getting to know each other!
Tarnation is in the center of tornado alley, so some of the town homes and businesses have basements, or have a "dugout" behind their building. Outhouses (privy) are the norm. Women are not expected to be smart or strong! If a woman is in her 20's and not married, she's considered to be a spinster. Betrothal is not uncommon, to prevent this.
Many things are not so different from small towns in the beginning of the 21st century, though. Everyone knows everyone, and neighbors normally help each other in times of trouble. "You're judged by your word, your work, and your honor." Life in the slower lane! This is a quick, enjoyable, and heartwarming read!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2017This story goes along with the Bride Brigade series that Caroline has written. Nice clean wholesome book that every one will love. The stories follow several women from their old homes in the east to the town of Tarnation, Texas to be mail order brides. These ladies are strong both in spirit and body to make the journey not knowing where they will end up. Lorraine is secretly a writer with a name pseuodym that allows her to write her stories back east and continues to allow it in her new home. The man she is interested in is the newspaper owner that doesn't see women able to do what she does. Follow them both on a journey of discovery and to love. Can't wait for the next bride story.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2017Caroline Clemmons has woven her magic again in the story about Lorraine. Caroline is a masterful story teller and she leaves the reader well satisfied. Lorraine is a well published and famous writer. She falls in love with a newspaper owner and writer who holds disdain for women writers. Their journey is interesting and rocky and full of excitement. A delightful story from beginning to end.
