4.6 out of 5 stars 257 ratings

One desperate young woman.
A chance meeting.
A life-changing outcome.

Growing up in a brothel, Mara O'Sullivan battled public disdain and contempt, but always remained kind-hearted and gracious. After testifying against vicious bank robbers, her life is threatened and Mara must find sanctuary far from everything she knows.

One train ride changes her life as she fatefully meets a half-sister and a niece she never knew existed. But when circumstances end her sister's life, Mara makes a promise that she'll raise her niece as her own and take her sister's place as Preston Kincaid's mail-order-bride. As Mara and Preston grow closer, their marriage no longer seems like a ruse, but a relationship of love, passion, and desire.

Mara's past comes back to haunt her and she finds herself in danger—will her new husband forgive Mara's deceit and protect her as his own?

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To make up for this tragic error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains from a small office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their rescued cats and dogs. The books she creates there have made her an Amazon bestselling author and won several awards.

Witnessing a bank robbery, testifying at the trial, and then having to leave town in the middle of the night when the prisoners escape, is a challenge Mara faces. On her train ride she meets her half sister and niece that she did not know she had. When her half sister dies, she promises to take care of her niece as her own child and take her place as a mail order bride. Caroline Clemmons writes to keep you turning pages to see what will happen next. I could not put this book down. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. Happy reading!

Another great story with lots of good characters, Preston and Amanda and little Iris being my favorites. I especially liked reading about the way people lived. It was interesting how the well for was dug first, then the house was built over it so the water wouldn't freeze in the winter.

What a fabulous story! It begins with Mara's story and then, by a strange twist of fate, becomes Amanda's story. Iris is a delightful child. She is the child everyone wants. Preston and Papa create an ideal life for Amanda and Iris. Then Mara's past catches up with her and it ends with a showdown and a gun battle. Caroline Clemmons know how to weave a story that holds your interest from beginning to end. I read this book in one sitting! Am looking forward to her next book!

This was the first book I have read by this author-referred by a friend. I did enjoy the story allot but I must say I almost did not finish the book as I really did not enjoy the style of the writing at all and was glad I only paid the .99 for it. I bought another book of the authors at the same time so hoping I enjoy that one better. I was actually surprised I didn't like this one as much after reading about how popular she is and the various awards received.

When i first started reading this book i thought that it was going to go a different route than it did. The way that it turned out was fantastic. Loved the characters and i would like to have more stories about Vern and Ben, they need their own books. Thank you for writing such a great story about Ranching and Farming.
