Clemmons pens a heartwarming romance between a Northern soldier and a Southern belle with "Long Way Home." Set during the American Civil War in Witherspoon, Georgia, Parmelia Bailey discovers her former suitor, Darrick McDonald, is now a captain in the Union army. Dare she let him into her heart again?

Clemmons pulls the reader into the story with an exciting beginning where Parmelia steals back her horses from the Union army that confiscated them. Her writing style is easy to read, and the plot flows well. I adored the characters! Parmelia is a feisty girl with a mind of her own and brave to the bone. Darrick is a noble hero, not afraid to face danger.

Clemmons paints a vivid setting that allows the reader to easily picture the town of Witherspoon. The story is a sweet romance, with Parmelia and Darrick exchanging a kiss or two. "Long Way Home" is a wonderful escape to another time and place and will leave the reader believing that the power of love can endure even the hardships of war. I highly recommend this story.

This story really had a good premise...except it felt rushed. And this is probably my fault because I should have looked at the page count prior to purchasing. It's more like a short story. The story moves fast and seems a bit rushed. I felt like it had so much potential as to be longer with more to it. The characters appeared, introduced themselves and the story was over...and left me wanting more...

Not much to it. Not a novel like I thought I was getting. Should have looked at the page count. It would make a good short story, but this is presented like it's a novel, and so customers think they're getting a long book, which is what I like for Civil War stories. I also do enjoy short stories for the period, but I like to know that's what I'm getting. Very short chapters. Doesn't take long to read. Could have made a wonderful novel if it had been developed more. No historical facts about the war either. Very light romance and a very short one. I suggest saying it's a short story, not a novel. Cost too much for the length. Disappointed. Should be 99 cents or $1.99 or developed more and made longer for the price. A good historical Civil War romance has much more details and facts and history about the war. This has none.

War tears through families and leaves hearts hurting struggling to survive and keep family together. Honor and respect are something that surface through the darkest travails and true friends come home where their heart finds peace.

Long Way Home by Caroline Clemmons is a wonderful story of courage in the face of danger, and love in spite of opposing views during the Civil War. Inspired by family stories, Caroline has spun an edge of your seat adventure and love story about brave Parmelia Bailey, who lives in a small Georgia farm town, and Captain Darrick McDonald, who is on a mission for the Army of the North. They haven't seen each other for four years, and when he discovers her stealing horses from a Yankee camp, sparks ignite between them. Darrick must protect Parmelia from the murderous ruffian he's under orders to find and arrest. But Parmelia is determined to protect her family and friends. Her reckless courage is almost her undoing as Darrick races against time to save her.

I couldn't put this story down. Caroline Clemmons has crafted another page-turner, sprinkled with delightful small town warmth set against desperate days during the Civil War. I highly recommend this story for an exciting and romantic read.

The story line was good, but the plot was not developed. It was good as a short story but not a novel.
