Lady Justice and the Avenging Angels (Lady Justice, Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 197 ratings

Lady Justice has unwittingly entered a religious war. Who better to fight for her than Walt Williams?

Walt and his sweetie, Maggie, have just returned from a honeymoon that was packed with love, fun, mystery, and danger. Now it’s time for them to adjust to living under the same roof—quite the challenge for a couple in their sixties, both of whom have never been married before! Suddenly Maggie’s feeding Walt fiber—lots of fiber—taking up almost all the closet space, and even getting rid of Walt’s favorite old recliner. But nothing could be better than having Maggie by his side when a great threat arises and Walt is, as usual, smack dab in the middle.

When Walt and his partner, Ox, are patrolling the Gay Pride Parade, a bomb goes off near them. They come out okay, but many are dead or seriously injured. Shortly after, the police squad learns the bombs are homemade by a group of religious fanatics calling themselves God’s Avenging Angels. The Avenging Angels believe it’s their job to rain fire and brimstone on Kansas City, their Sodom and Gomorrah. The next attacks could be anywhere in the metro, so all cops are needed to comb the city and find the perpetrators. Walt and Ox are on the case, which continues to be explosive.

In this compelling addition to the Lady Justice series, Robert Thornhill brings back all the characters readers have come to love for more hilarity and higher stakes. You’ll laugh, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat until the big finish. Don’t miss Lady Justice and the Avenging Angels!

I thoroughly enjoyed this installment off the Lady Justice series. In this case, a bomb detonates during a gay pride parade resulting in deaths and injuries to participants and parade watchers; senior citizen police officers, Walt and Ox were miraculously sidetracked or they would have filled coffins too. Turns out that a religious fanatical group has sinners and whoremongers in their crosshairs and use home-made bombs to kill them. During the investigation, the religious fanatics continue their attacks which makes the police department appear unable to protect the people.

The main characters are older senior citizens and the dialogue between them is often funny and true to form; a glimpse into our own futures. I did find it interesting this time in learning about Willy's ancestors and their dealings with the James gang and Younger boys. A map found in an old bible leads Willy and Walt on a treasure hunt through the mountainous backwoods in hopes of finding loot or other memorabilia from the early 1800's. And just like it is in real life, many of the landmarks mentioned on the map no longer exist or have reverted back to nature. Both men are ambushed during their hunt and left for dead without any way of escaping or rescue. Is this the end?

The story is easy to read - as are all of the earlier installments. I've read them all and look forward to reading the author's next one. Great job Mr. Thornhill!

Note: I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

I am SO late getting this review in. I actually listened to this months ago. Like all the other entries in the Lady Justice series, this is still a fun listen. The plot isn't too deep or convoluted, so it's more like a "cozy" mystery type of book. But the characters are interesting enough to want to keep coming back.

There are some repeated weaknesses throughout the series (highly convenient occurrences, etc.) but so far it hasn't been enough to turn me away from listening to further entries. Besides that, the only other complaint is the narrator. It's not that the narrator is bad - he's actually perfect for the part, imo. He does a good job on the voices and his comedic timing is good too. But the mouth and sinus noises are so prevalent that it's very, very distracting. Sometimes these things can be corrected with technique. But when that doesn't work there are software fixes available. I cannot understand why this hasn't been done yet. As someone familiar with such edits (since I'm a narrator myself), my fingers itch to run this thing through my DAW and fix those problems. Of course, it's also possible that being a narrator has made me super sensitive to such issues that would go unnoticed by most listeners.

At any rate, it's still a fun series and I would recommend it to fans of such a genre.

I got this book as a free download, which is always a bonus in my book, and even though I am a fan of the series somehow I had missed this one, so I was happy to catch up with the motley crew of characters. What I love about the series is that Robert Thornhill always infuses his books with what is going on in the world right now, the plot usually moves at a quick pace and the main characters are all over 60. Its so refreshing to have a book showcase that life is not over after 50 and that there is still plenty of action, humor and yes even romance. Fun read and great series, and you can read it out of order without getting lost.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fourth installment of the Lady Justice Series. All the previous books had a bit of humor in each story. This fourth book was chock full of comical happenings that had me chuckling out loud.

The same characters are in this book - the main protagonist Walt Williams, his wife, Maggie, his sidekick, Ox, friends Willie, Mary and Jerry. The author has created unforgettable characters in this series that make the reader feel right at home with them.

This story carries a religious theme involving a powerful enigmatic character who controls some unknowing citizens into committing murder in the name of God. Walt and Ox find themselves in the midst of this craziness and nearly at death’s door multiple times as they try to stop the carnage.

The author has a wonderful sense of humor and creativity as he prolifically produces more entertaining mysteries about tough themes. These books are quick readers that will pull you in and have you chuckling in between the murders and mysteries. I highly recommend them to all lovers of mysteries, comedies and crime - an unlikely trio - but it works! I look forward to many more entertaining books from this talented author.

Compelling and depressing. Stand-alone that is easy to follow. Interesting storyline with both a depressing and realistic view of religious zealots.

Believable characters with distinct personalities. The dialogue is informative, thought-provoking and humorous. The jokes are cringeworthy.

Religious zealots. There is no one more dangerous than a man who believes he has been given a divine mission from God and the power and authority to carry it out.

In 1993, the Branch Davidians, led by David Koresh, fought the ATF and FBI at Waco, Texas, leaving over eighty dead.

The sentence regarding the Koresh-Waco debacle serves what purpose?
