Review
Pam of Babylon will keep you turning the pages from start to finish. In fact, the best piece of advice I have for any reader is to have enough time aside to read this entire book at once, because once you start it, you will not want to put it down. Any reader who enjoys chick lit, women's fiction, or just an enjoyable read will love this book. I recommend Pam of Babylon, and am very much looking forward to reading the next installment in author Suzanne Jenkins' series as soon as possible.

A Critic's Pick on Kirkusreviews.com
"An intriguing first novel that revolves around a husband's death andhidden secrets.
Women's fiction with a touch of noir."
A story about looking forward to restart life, even in the presence ofdeath
"When a book starts from a seemingly perfect place for the character, youknow he is not going to stay there long... So when Jack Smith is looking at theface of Sandra, his mistress, thinking "I am the luckiest man alive,"his luck is at its end. Not only would Marie, his wife's sister, find out abouthis affair, but he wouldn't live long enough to try to handle the scandal withPam, his meek, trusting wife.
This book is about looking forward to restart life already, even in thepresence of death. It is about healing, part of which comes from forgiveness. Iknow this sounds strange to some readers, who find Pam's behavior 'toounreal." Apparently it is easier and perhaps more natural for many of usto succumb to vengefulness. At the same time, this is exactly why this book isso fascinating. It offers a different possibility, a more hopefulone."There was something about cleaning up, washing everything, that spokeof new beginnings."
Five stars.

From the Author
After writing about Pam almost daily for the past six years, she's as real to me as family members are. Pam's friends and family are critical of her for going into relationships too quickly. but what else is she going to do? She likes having a man around and unless I write a book titled Pam Takes a Break, she'll just keep jumping in! Suzanne Jenkins August 2016
From the Inside Flap
For Pam Smith, the answer to that question is about to come shockingly into focus. Every week she spends her days on Long Island preparing for her husband Jack's weekend return from the city. It is an idyllic life, a modern Norman Rockwell painting of success, comfort, and the love of family and friends that is built on the foundation of the American Dream. But on this particular Saturday, a day no different than any other, Pam receives news that will shatter her world forever.
From the Back Cover
A fascinating character study, Jenkins' novel demonstrates the devastating consequences of our actions and how they can reverberate through generations. Through forgiveness, the characters find redemption and strength, eschewing the option of victimization for one of power and, ultimately, personal peace.

Tissue alert as these three women try to reconcile the man they knew to the man he really was

- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017There is an old saying, "Never judge a book by its cover" which fits this book perfectly. I was in a quandary whether to read it or not. The cover really turned me off, but something nudged me to give it a try. So I did. I loved it so much that I gave up my housework, my writing, and missed church so that I could finish it. The plot is amazing. At first, I thought, "Oh, no, not this again." I had recently read two books that began similarly. I am so glad that I stayed with it for the twists and turns are not just amazing, they are heartwarming, surprising, and against the grain. There are three women caught in a situation that affects each of them differently: one is widowed suddenly, one is pregnant and alone, and one is a maiden sister with a secret that tightens the plot convincingly. Jenkins has build her characters well giving them very distinct personalities: one is acerbic and unpopular, one is beautiful, smart and totally out of her element, the other is shy, quiet, friendless, and a true martyr. Put them all together in a beautiful beach house for a weekend and expect something big. You will not be disappointed. When Jenkins throws in a gangster-like brother-in-law and a snobbish mother-in-law the scene is set for something totally out of the norm. You must read this story to understand that the little town of Babylon, New York where Pam has a life and a lovely home cannot yield its secrets without a catalyst and Jenkins gives us a surprising one. You will not be sorry--just plan to give up several hours when you cannot let go. Good reading to you!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2013Although there are controversial portions of this book (and you are forewarned in the blurb,) I thought this was a well written book about the damaging and crushing blows a wife takes when learning of her husband's betrayals after his death. I will not go into detail about everything that happens in the book, as I don't want to ruin it for other readers, but I will say that this book is more than just different.
There are times while reading this that I absolutely could not believe anyone would react to another human being the way the main character did, that being said, she also reminded me that there are those who base their lives on forgiveness and her actions made her a stronger character. This book has some characters that I loved, some I loved when I didn't want to, and a couple that I absolutely detested. In the beginning I didn't understand why Pam's sister was such a spoiled brat and why she behaved the way she did toward Pam and toward Sandra. Later on, I did.
There are some editing issues (not sure if it has been fixed since I downloaded my copy.) There are a few repeat partial sentences and words and a couple of other issues, but I didn't find them distracting enough to make me stop reading. For a first novel, I was surprised by the depth this book has.
Overall, I found this to be a fine example of storytelling. The characters have issues that make them more human and make you want to stay with them on their journey. The plot is different and it worked, and for a first novel, without the backing of a team of editors and a major house to back it up, I felt this was a very promising start to a career in writing women's fiction. I would encourage you to read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2013I liked this book. I have already read the second book of the series. There are quite a few grammatical errors, but none were irritating. The book lagged in the middle, but it picked up. This book set out the foundation for the series. Pam's husband, Jack, dies from a heart attack. In tending to his final affairs, Pam learns that Jack's mistress is pregnant, and that Jack has been sexually abusing her sister for many years. The situation is more than odd when these three women bond in close friendship. As the story progresses, Jack's family and Pam and her family focus on doing what is best for the baby. Pam immediately starts planning the nursey in her own home for the baby. This is where the story lags. These women are fruitcakes. Fortunately, the author is a gifted writer, and I wanted to read all about the fruitcakes. I liked the author's descriptions of New York City and the driving back and forth from Long Island to Manhattan. That was like a sight seeing tour for me. Pam and her sister have each met a man of their own within weeks of Jack's death. I do hope there is no more sharing the same man. An element of danger is introduced near the end of the book compelling the reader to read the next book of the series.
The book is a fast read, and, dear readers, you will love it. I wrote a review of the second book, DON'T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME, on Goodreads and Amazon.
Thank you, Ms.Jenkins, for a good read.

I wasn't sure about this book, didn't think I could get into it, and thought its not really my thing, but get into it I did! I just loved all the characters, Suzanne brought them to life and I had a perfect picture of it all in my minds eye. 5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable & gripping
Reading this book is like peeling an onion....so many layers!
Just when you think you've gotten to the last layer, you discover that there are SO many more! Lots of intrigue & surprises, a totally engrossing story!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book to read, and hard to put down.
This book is full of twists and turns as each characters personality and story is revealed. You cannot help feel sorry for Pam, as she discovers more and more about the man she thought she knew well and loved. It is worth it to carry on and read the next two books, so you can finally understand the relationships, sometimes horrific and sad, between some of the family members. No doubt some readers will relate this book to their own experiences in real life.
