Demon (Book 1) (Mike Rawlins and Demon the Dog) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 377 ratings

Five high school seniors were going to the 'haunted house' when their car wouldn't start. Mike Rawlins who is a sophomore and works at his dad's auto shop stopped by and got the car going for them. They convince Mike to go with them to the haunted house and he does, but not before stopping and getting holy water at the church and buying salt. Mike had been there before, he knew to be prepared.

Once in the house the girls are less than enthused. Talk about creepy. Mike makes a circle with the salt and holy water. The others think he's really nuts. Jerry and Stan are excited and Mike? Well Mike's been here before and he's less than enthused. The guys then head for the cellar. The cellar that has a huge stinking sinkhole and a metal hatch. The guys try to pull the hatch up only to have it fly up on its own.

It releases a luminescent wave that goes through the entire house and crashes into their salt circle. This thing is screeching with rage and loud enough for the teens to grab their ears in agony. They all jump into the circle. The circle that is their only protection from this thing.

Enter an emaciated mixed breed dog. The dog dives right through the apparition, jaws ripping at thin air. The dog then begins herding the apparition as though it were a sheep. Snapping and growling without fear until inexplicably the monster disappears. They all make tracks out of that house as fast as they can.

Mike takes possession of the dog. A dog he names Demon. Demon is an Australian Shepherd/Lab mix. At least that's what the vet comes up with. Demon turns out to be Mikes best friend and as we go along Mike realizes that Demon is way more than just a dog. Mike and his friends who now have a bond are on a roller-coaster of a ride.

I am a professional writer with numerous best-sellers, and read quite a lot, but Bernard Lee DeLeo is one of the purest writing talents I have ever had the pleasure of reading - a brilliant writing talent that I can only envy. - James Byron Huggins

As readers we all have our dark horses and Demon is mine. There’s no gore or sex (minor teenage situations) because the book starts out as a YA series, which is perfectly fine for me. The main characters have their quirks and are developed nicely. Supporting characters are an excellent mishmash of individuals. The book touches on some of today’s topics but it doesn’t delve deeply. If you’re looking for a book that deals with these topics heavily, then this isn’t the one. For this I’m glad! What the author creates is an action, adventure novel with a paranormal twist. The reader will get solid parents, supporting friends and even have to deal with the occasional bully. Do not expect realism, this is not what the book is about. For me I sat back and enjoyed the ride and read all four novels.
PS: There is some underage drinking which has rules to follow (parents’ permission) but for some people this is unacceptable. Understand the author writes it up as a necessity because of what they do, but it still will be an unacceptable option.

Demon I (Mike Rawlins and Demon the Dog, #1) by Bernard Lee DeLeo is a paranormal book made for teens but it is also suppose to be a horror book too. It is perfect for people that want to read a horror book and want to be scared, but really don't want to be! LOL. It has some paranormal fun but not scary. It has a couple of bullies in a couple of scenes and that is as scary as it gets. The book is still good. It is perfect for those wanting to dip there toes into the paranormal. Demon is a dog, and he is a good dog with paranormal abilities he uses for good. A cute teen book. Clean and fun.

    Demon was one good read.

Laura, Janis and Connie along with Jerry Clark and Stan Brickwalter, two football jocks, are stranded. They are all seniors in high school The car won't start. They were all set to go into the "haunted house."

Enter Mike Rawliins. He's a sophomore but he also works in his Dads Auto shop. They get Mike to start the car.

They also get Mike to go into the haunted house with em. Mike goes as long as they stop and buy salt and get holy water from St. Joseph's church. The others think he's nuts but go along with it. How right Mike turned out to be. Mike knows somethings in that house because he and his cousin were there three years earlier.

It releases a luminescent wave that goes through the entire house and crashs into their salt circle.

Mike folks let Demon stay and Demon becomes his dog. What a dog to have. Demon is an Austrailian Shepherd/Lab mix. At least thats what the vet comes up with.

Demon turns out to be Mikes best friend and as we go along Mike realizes that Demon is way more than just a dog.

Mike and his friends who now have a bond are on a rollercoaster of a ride.

Mike and Laura have the start of a relationship. A relationship that will prove to be very difficult.

Just one great read and being a dog lover I root for Demon. Five stars and then some.

This tugs at the Human/Canine bonding while a group of teens and parents battle the killer haunts trying to invade our world. Interesting and humorous interaction between humans and canine make this novel a must read. I laughed out loud on numerous occasions as I have found that this author Mr. DeLeo can make a person do freely. The author has a sense of morality that is obvious to the reader. Thank God for Bernard DeLeo. I have read every single series he has..All superior to most writers. But hey I'm bias, I like real entertainment!

It was meant for a younger audience, but I did enjoy it. The dog was a good part to the story, and it turned out better than I thought it would.

This is a terrific and inventive story line, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely read the next one. However, a good editor could help you learn the use of a past participle. You cannot "have went", but must "have gone" (not isolated, there are many such). Please, please have someone grammar check. I am assuming you are writing for a young adult audience, so teach them how it should be done. Also, science is an issue. NO alcohol during pregnancy (wine coolers, really?). Do not teach our young mothers that disguising it in fruit juice makes it ok for the fetus. Fetal alcohol syndrome is serious and irreversible.

I have read most of Bernard's books and I wasn't too sure I would like the Demon series. Well, I read the first Mike Rawlins book and I can't get enough of this series. I have read the first two books back to back and will start on the 3rd book as soon as I finish the second. I never should have doubted this series especially sine Bernard wrote it. I have loved all his books in the Nick McCarty series, all the books in the Hard Case series and all the books in the Cantelli series. I should have known the Demon series would be just as good. You have to read anything written by Bernard Lee DeLeo.

This is a fantastic story of a boy and his dog. Especially when you consider that it's a ghost eating dog...

I've read the whole series (5 books at current count) and really liked them all. Well worth a read.
