Cold Mountain: CIA Assassin (Action Thrillers and Blood Lust Series Book 10) Kindle Edition
After an off-hand remark McDaniels makes concerning a movie while accepting blame for the Hughes' fiasco, the press label him 'Cold Mountain'. Taken into custody on Reskova's orders, McDaniels avoids prison by public outcry and Senator Hokanson's intervention. With Hokanson's shadowy sponsorship, McDaniels becomes the enforcement arm of Reskova's team. With Kumar Rasheed, an Iraqi whose family McDaniels had saved during the second Iraq war, McDaniels supplies Reskova with a weapon she has neither asked for nor condones.
Funneled between America and Iraq, McDaniels stays one step ahead of American bureaucrats more interested in appearances than the safety of the country. Reskova, at first repulsed by McDaniels' methods, soon embraces both the enigmatic McDaniels and his tactics. Reskova threads McDaniels and his Iraqi comrade Kumar Rasheed into her anti-terrorism unit with murderous result. McDaniels' background and deadly skills become a point of fascination for the bewildered Reskova as her attraction to McDaniels quickly rivals her dedication to the FBI.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2013WOW. This book just plain rocked and I LMAO through loads of the story. No shortage of comedy in this one.
Starts out with kidnapping of a young girl. A girl who happens to be the niece of a US Senator, Frank Hokanson.
Her kidnapper, Stanton Hughes, a serial killer if there ever was one, styles himself as a mountain man. He's in the woods somewhere with the little girl. She isn't the first little girl he's kidnapped and killed and she won't be the last unless he's caught or killed.
Enter the FBI. Special Agents Jen Rutledge, Sam Barrington and Agent in Charge Diane Reskova are tasked with finding the girl and catching Hughes. Of course they have been trying to catch Hughes for two years. They are always a step behind.
Right now they are getting ready to go after Hughes. Following a trail he's left for them.
The FBI agents aren't going hunting for Hughes alone. None of them are woodsman by the stretch of anyones imagination. Colonel Jeremiah McDaniels will be going with them.
McDaniels is 6'7" in his stocking feet. He was raised by Mescalaro Apache's. He's a ghost in motion and the best damned tracker that Reskovas boss, Assistant Director Dreyer, has ever seen.
Dreyer knows this because he served in the First Gulf war as a Force Recon Marine. Its where he first met McDaniels when McDaniels saved he and his men from an ambush.
Dreyer also knows McDaniels history in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Seems McDaniel has no problem killing to get the job done. ROE's don't mean much to him especially when it comes to gathering intel, avenging a dead friend or protecting his men. As far as McDaniels is concerned enemies are for killing.
Heads rolled in Iraq. Sixteen to be exact. Its the reason he was sent out of Iraq and is now in the reserves. At least thats what everyone thinks.
Yup. McDaniel is hell on wheels and one very, very capable guy.
McDaniels is also in on the hunt per the request of Senator Hokanson. He knows with McDaniels involved the chances of his niece making it home alive have greatly improved. He does know McDaniels and his reputation.
A fact the FBI agents will appreciate as they head into the woods after Hughes.
So begins one great read.
We meet McDaniels friend Rasheed, an Iraqi who now lives in the US. He's knows as Kay. Kay is every bit as lethal as McDaniels. He's also one funny guy. We also watch as McDaniels and Reskova begin a relationship and form a team like no other.
Its also an eye opener about the idiots who run this country. Idiots who have no problem with our open borders. Idiots who have no problem with those who come across those borders. Idiots who want political correctness and lets not forget we gotta handle criminals with kid gloves and terrorists have rights. Idiots who also send our soldiers into battle with one hand tied behind their backs with idiotic ROE's.
If your a liberal you probably won't like Monster. Its not politically correct in any way shape or form. Kudo's to the author big time.
One good read and well worth those five stars. Sure hope we see McDaniel and his crew in another novel. One impressive read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2013"Monster" is not a deep book, or even much of a thriller. It goes from event to event with a fast pace and has a lot of humor, bonding, and revenge. There isn't much suspense or mystery, just the unfolding of the story. I gave it 5 stars because it provided a nice, shallow, entertaining and relaxing read without wondering if the favorites were going to be destroyed. Plus this book is long compared to the author's other books I've read, so I feel I got my money's worth.
I don't care much about grammar slip-ups unless they stop the flow of a book. A couple of these slips did, however. Having a rough-tough hero say "I've went" doesn't cause much disruption, but having the Assistant Director say it really does. I have noticed this particular mistake in the author's writing and it's getting old. "Casting dispersions" doesn't cause much pause when a non-native English speaker says it, until I realized the gag wasn't followed up. Then, later the hero says it without follow-up so maybe it is some family joke that went wrong.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2013This is a BIG book, probably the only reason why I didn't give it a 5-star as I prefer my ebooks shorter. Quite possibly will buy the paperback this Christmas and give it another read over the holidays. As I said this is a big book, in terms of length, action, laughs, spills and thrills. De Leo does a great job constructing characters worthy of the reader's time and investment. Great action and a compelling storyline propels the reader along on this wild action thriller that follows the exploits of Jeremiah McDaniels and his partner, Diane Roskova. I could see this being made into a movie with someone like Bruce Willis in the lead role. I have read a couple of De Leo's books now and this certainly won't be the last.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2016I really enjoyed this book as the lead character was the type of person who believed in action rather than platitudes and in removing one's enemies before said enemies could do something to him or to someone close to him. It was practically non-stop action throught the whole book, and it was a long book, but I was so enjoying the attitude and capabilities of the lead character that I didn't want it to end. Also, there was a lot of banter back and forth between characters that I enjoyed as it reminded me of the type of bantering we ofetn did when I was in the military. Yes, a lot of people would probably find many of the actions the lead character took offensive but I didn't at all. I like the fact the lead character had compassion, and a lot of it, at certain times but it did not override his taking whatever action was needed to thoroughly neutralize and remove a threat.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2014A typical Bernard DeLeo book, very easy reading, a very engrossing main character, maybe a little over the top, but If you like Bernard DeLeo books with lots of action where the main character doesn't bother warning bad guys, he just takes them out, than this is a book you will enjoy. By the time you finish the book you will feel you know the characters intimately. From the very beginning when Jeremiah McDaniels (aka: Cold Mountain) attempts to rescue the little girl, the action doesn't stop. I had to force myself to put the book down so that I could could get some sleep (and do my real job) If you cross Cold Mountain you might as well as write your obituary, because he will hunt you down and destroy you....in is not a matter of IF or when, but more like how. And how the information he 'squeezes' from you will lead you on the next adventure...you'll want to keep reading until the end...A very good, very typical Bernard DeLeo written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent easy action read to relax & enjoy
This is the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it very much. From the very first chapter I was drawn in to the story and the characters and I wanted to see what would happen next and frankly who would survive their trek into the woods. It was an easy read with very interesting action and dialogue between characters. l recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories that move quickly and conclude events before moving on to the next development. It is an excellent book for anyone who has a short time to read such as a commuter or perhaps has a few minutes to read before turning out the light at the end of the day. Enjoy Cold Mountain, I did.
