Karen Musser Nortman, after previous incarnations as a secondary social studies teacher (22 years) and a test developer (18 years), returned to her childhood dream of writing mysteries. Her first series, The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries, sprouted from numerous camping trips in Iowa and through at least 24 other states. The Frannie Shoemaker Mysteries center around a group of retirees who camp together and sometimes stumble over dead bodies. Six of the books have been designated IndieBRAG medallion honorees and three have been finalists in Chanticleer CLUE and Mystery and Mayhem contests. Most of the books are based on actual campgrounds.

Karen has two other series. The Time Travel Trailer series follows the adventures of Lynne McBriar who buys a vintage camper that turns out to be a time portal. The first in the series, by the same name, was the 2015 category winner in the Chanticleer Paranormal contest. The Mystery Sisters is a new series involving two seventy-something sisters who travel the country in a 1950 Studebaker, argue, annoy their relatives, and solve mysteries.

Karen has three children and eight grandchildren. She also loves reading, gardening, and knitting, and can recite the 99 counties of Iowa in alphabetical order.

I enjoyed this book, it is what I call a candy read. Camping with diverse friends, bon fires, meals group activities. and murder. Frannie Shoemaker likes people and makes acquaintances easily, it is her nature to ask questions. Just sometimes that gives her too much information. Even though there was murder they still had bike rides and pie. Once we solve the crime, some great camping tips to wrap it up. A delightful and easy read.

There’s never a dull moment when you’re camping with Larry and Frannie Shoemaker and friends: hiking, canoeing, bicycling, stumbling over major crimes in want of solving… The last thing the Shoemakers and three of their couple friends expected to find while enjoying the scenic beauty of Minnesota was foul play. Amidst a bumper crop of interesting characters aka suspects (including a set of mirror image twins who impersonate one another, a misled old flame, a country singer “wannabe” with a very fake and very bad Southern accent, suspected meth lab operators, a nature center employee with a sour disposition, and Grizzly Adams’ twin, to name a few), the group finds themselves unwillingly entangled in another murder investigation. An injury and serious desire to steer clear of trouble this time greatly curtail Frannie’s investigative tendencies. But, the scene of the crime (an abandoned power plant alongside the river) beckons to her like a siren. And, her curious nature compels her to ask a few too many questions. Hence, she becomes a target that needs to be silenced. I love the title, artwork and formatting, character development, plot, and pacing of this book. However, I do think stories such as these should come with warnings for readers. For example, “Danger! Frequent mentions of pie may cause you to drool on your Kindle!” Or, “Beware, you’ll be late to work tomorrow because you stayed up all night to finish this lovely story!” And, lastly, “You’ll get the itch to travel!” I mean, it’s only fair. Readers need to know what they’re getting into so they can prepare accordingly. Perhaps the third time is the charm for Frannie, and she’ll no longer stumble across any more mysteries. For the sake of readers everywhere, however, I hope Mrs. Nortman casts dear Frannie as a meddling, but good-intentioned, camper far into the future! I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series.

I have read the whole series so far in the "Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries" - each one is a great treat particularly for those who like to travel and camp. Especially fun for those who also love a good mystery! The author does a great job at characterization and makes you feel as if these people could be your friends. She describes the scenes with enough detail that you are drawn into the story and feel like you are going right along with Frannie on her adventures. No real gory or unsavory details so just about anyone can read these - they are just enjoyable and fun to read. I always look forward to the next book by Ms. Nortman.

All the friends are together in this book (Frannie & Larry, Jane Ann & Mickey, Nancy & Ben, and Donna & Rob) as they head to Minnesota for some camping and biking. Shortly after they group arrives they come across the scene of two dead bodies. Not only is the group involved in another possible murder investigation but this time around Frannie had an accident getting into a canoe. Frannie having bruised ribs has to stay behind while the others go on biking, hiking, and shopping trips. Frannie starts to see some strange things happening around the campground. Was this a murder/suicide? Was someone at the campground involved? Will Frannie get involved in the investigation?

I was immediately sucked into this story. I loved how author Karen Musser Nortman writes her characters with flaws. The story starts with a flat tire, Donna buys shoes that are too small because they are cute, Nancy is some sometimes over organized, and Frannie fell in the river and got hurt but refuses to go for medical help. I like the humor Nortman puts in her stories but the stories are written with a realistic tone.

Narrator Michelle Babb doesn’t disappoint , she brings another story to life. Mrs Babb is a natural storyteller. She has a smooth clear voice and keeps the story moving at a steady pace. She makes listening to the story an enjoyable experience.

I would recommend the cozy, no graphic language, sex, or graphic violence.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this audiobook for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
