Review

This is the fourth book in the series about Jack Smith and his wife Pam and their families. Like all of the other books, it doesn't matter if you have read the books in the series or not, as they can be read individually. This book starts off with Pam being newly engaged to Jack and looking forward to the life that lies ahead of her whilst Ash, Jack's lover since their teenage years, is left devastated that Jack has chosen a woman over him. The book continues with Ashley and Jack's story from the past and Pam's story from the present where she has been left dealing with being HIV positive, a legacy she shares with others courtesy of Jack. When Marie, Pam's sister and another of Jack's AIDS victims, finds she is pregnant with her new partner Steve's child, life continues to throw a few curve balls. I have enjoyed reading all four of Suzanne Jenkins' books and would recommend them to anyone. (LM) Chick Lit Club

    The entire series, Pam of Babylon, is a dark, well written, compelling look into a twisted relationship in a contemporary setting. This is book #4, as much depends on knowing the characters and the story, it probably does not stand well on it's own as a solo read, but as part of the series it absolutely shines as the next segment of the ongoing saga of the life of Pam of Babylon.

    When I picked up book #1, it was some pretty rugged subject matter. Though a novel, it is no light fiction. The author has done a masterful and truly insightful job of developing her characters, exploring a very complex relationship matrix involving many main characters and how they influence and interact around the primary character of the book who is dead from the beginning of the story. Through all follows, you learn much of Jack, while watching the depth charges of his behaviors detonate deeper and deeper in the lives of his wife, children, mother, brother and his family, mistress, various lovers and those whom he used and abused when he was alive. It is one of the most remarkable series of books that I have read in my life, but it is not always comfortable, in fact frequently not, which is where the brilliance of this author really shines - she makes it possible to take this painful journey anyway, and I have learned a lot through reading her insightful narrative and observing her penetrating development of characters and their amazing interactions. I cannot recommend this series highly enough. But start with book #1. {Smile}

    Very engaging book. I loved watching the characters grow through the series. I don't normally buy series books but this one was the exception and leaves me wanting more. There were plenty of mispellings but the story pulled me in and they were easily overlooked.

    Have just Prayers for the Dying. Once I started the series, I couldn't stop reading. Although, Pam of Babylon caught my interest, I felt that momentum in the story increased with the second book, Don't You Forget About Me. As the story about Jack's (Pam's deceased husband) immoral legacy unraveled, the lives of people who each had their own unique stories were revealed. I was impressed by the way Suzie introduced and connected the lives of so many seemingly "ordinary" New Yorkers who had a variety of hidden secrets. The unexpected and well-placed twists and relationships that occurred kept my interest throughout the four novels. Although Pam, who had to deal with the brunt of the aftermath of Jack's diabolical behavior, was the character that received the most attention, my thoughts constantly turned to Jack. I tried to understand his erratic behavior. I wondered what kind of human being he might have been if he hadn't been the product of childhood rape, incest, neglect and deceit. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

    I started the Pam of Babylon series with book #2 not realizing it was a series. Just finished #4 and the editing/proofing seems to get worse in each book. Please people if you can't spell it and/or don't know what it means, look it up or use another word. I'm enjoying the story but typos and misused words cause hiccups in my reading...

    Everyone's life is still reeling with the ongoing traumas directly resulting from Jack's behavior. Pam has time to process more of the mess Jack left her in. She has her mother and mother-in-law to deal with. Her sister Marie is expecting a baby and develops a brain infection forcing Pam to make her mother Nelda pitch in instead of living the life of a woman with means. Some reviewers are offended by Pam. She is person who knew going in that Jack expected an impossible amount of freedom and had higher standards for her behavior than his own. She decided early on that she would start as she meant to go on and limited her responsibilities to what she could do perfectly. This was okay with Jack because she otherwise left him alone to play. The characters of Bill and Marie seem to get little sympathy in the book, but let's be honest, they are not sympathetic characters. They both had childhood traumas, but instead of taking responsibility for their lives, they lived off Jack. In fact most all these women either actively sought our Jack who then used them for sex, but many used him for money as well. So with the exception of Sandra and Pam, these women knew he was sexually active with lots of other partners and did nothing to protect themselves. Ash chose to give up his life to Jack's whims even though he knew other partners were out there he could have a normal life with.

    This part of the saga of Pam had more to do with accepting that life goes on. We lose Dale and Marie, but Miranda comes to join our group of Jack survivors and life goes on. Processing pain and learning slowly who she can trust becomes part of Pam's journey forward and Ted comes into Ash's life. If Pam seems a little cold, it is because she is learning to protect herself and not let her best qualities be used against her like Jack did for so long. Pam is just a woman who did not see what was going on in her life. Very few people ever apologized to her for the turmoil their behavior caused her, they just expected her to make Jack's sins right: A task that was impossible for even Jack. I can personally speak to the sense of entitlement people you help constantly have. Not only do they feel no personal responsibility for their own plight, but they actually see you as having a responsibility for their future. If they are not your kids and you personally did not cause their plights, you owe them nothing more than you are willing to give. The character development and the pace continue as Pam and Sandra form an uneasy friendship. They are of disparate ages and interests, but they both had Jack's welfare as the center of their lives and they both have concern and mixed feelings about the other they have to resolve to move forward. Finally Tom and Sandra are able to move forward too.

    The whole series was such an up to date horror/love story. Every young person should read this series just to learn the what ifs. I am by no means a young person and I could relate to these women is some way or the other, each one. I felt like I knew them. They all had some trait you could relate to. Excellent books! And the ending....!

    This whole series is something of a guilty pleasure of mine - an over the top, unbelievable plot line which you just can't resist for some reason. In book four we follow Pam and Co finally coming to terms with Jack's dreadful legacy and beginning to move on in life and planning for the future. However, if you have read the first books in the series you will be expecting "something" and book four certainly doesn't disappoint - more heartache and shocks to come, some good and some bad.

    We also look back over the early years of Jack and Pam's marriage, as well as his friendship with Ashton and it seems now that all the pieces are starting to come together and make some sort of sense, although of course book five still has to be read.

    As with the other books, there are editing issues which really should be ironed out for the sake of perfection. This is a good series and really deserves to be presented to the reader in the best way possible.

    I'm still loving the Smith saga. This was a sad book to read, to let go of some of the people we've been introduced to, especially Marie. But I am pleased to have her healthy baby take her place. However, it did dawn on me that HIV doesn't turn into aids overnight and it has been hinted that Jack may have caught HIV early on in his and Pam's marriage, which made me think about Pam's children, could they be HIV positive too? Oh I do hope not! Which makes me so ready to read book five. If not, or even considered in Book 5 the author may want to address this, because in terms of reality she has opened us up to the idea that Pam has AIDs, which suggests she was infected with HIV a long time ago, hence her children's HIV status needs to also be addressed.

    Again, as in all of the books so far better editing is needed as there are silly typos and other mistake that ought not to be there if edited properly.

    i am enjoying this series - its a compulsive read even though it's pretty outrageous. However as a previous reviewer has said the read is spoilt by extremely poor editing and apparently non-existent proof reading. Otherwise I would rate it 4 star. LD
