Burn District: A Short Story: Prequel to Burn District the Series Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 200 ratings

Laura and Mike Davis and their four children build an idyllic life with friends and family nearby in the beautiful Brandywine River Valley. Dreams and goals come to an abrupt end soon after Hurricane Sandy hits the east coast. Discovered in wood soaked by seawater, a virus thought to have the potential to decimate the population becomes the excuse to relocate thousands of citizens from beach towns. Fire is the only known way to eradicate the virus.
Rumors spread that napalm is used to burn without evacuating the people. A neighbor warns Laura and Mike that their town is next as the destruction moves inland. Is it a drastic way to halt the spread of disease, or is there another catalyst?

Review

This short story wets your appetite for the book to come along and I had to wait (seemed endlessly) until it came out. Once you read the first book you are drawn into the surviving of the family and how smart they are to make a life within the chaos. It will amaze you and surprise you and unfortunately, I have to also wait for the second book in the series. But, try the short story and believe me, you will be hooked. The end of the world comes as many terrible things and as the title tells you, in this book, it is fire. Sandy Sims-Amazon Reviewer

This was a great prequel to the Burn District series. I usually like to read Cozy Mysteries so this was a big departure from my normal reading fare. I'm so glad a took a chance and tried something new. I was hooked from the beginning and the terrifying scenario and finding out the fate of the family keeps me wanting to read more. I now have the first book in the series and can't wait to get started.

This is a very short prequel. I like stories with virus epidemics as this one has, although the cause of this one sounded a bit ridiculous. But it was only briefly addressed. I liked the idea of a family packing everything up waiting. And then being on the run. This story is interesting because they have four children and it definitely impacts "the running." Overall, the story is not professional writing in my opinion. But, it was an interesting and somewhat exciting read. And for a free book I guess you can't go wrong.
Problems I found with the book: There was a typo 27% into the book. She wrote, "along" when in the use of this sentence she should have written "a long." There was a 2nd typo 30% into the book. She wrote, "...of the blast to sink it." when she should have written, "...of the blast to sink in." Soon after that she uses a word I couldn't find in any dictionary: "perseverating." What is that? My next problem with the book was that suddenly in the middle of the story she wrote, "...what I saw was so horrible I can't write about it." There is no indication anywhere in the book that she is writing down this account or someone is reading a journal. It distracted me from the story, because it didn't make sense. My next problem: The idea of the government bugging each house using people's "satellite connection" was far-fetched and ridiculous. I can imagine the government spying on us more than it does in real life, but not in the way she describes. My next problem: Near the end of the story she writes, "No one knows what tomorrow will bring..." That is so cliche. Can't she be more imaginative? Finally at the end of her book she advertises a bunch of books. One of them is not even for sale anymore.

Burn District is a prequel to a new series. It was 22 pages of intense reading! Normally I don't read a lot of post-apocalyptic or science fiction but I thought this sounded interesting. It was a story that gets in your head and makes you think...what if this happened.

I am sure this is going to be an exciting yet terrifying series. I'd recommend it and look forward to reading more of the Burn District!

This was an intense prequel! Which do you believe - the rumors or the conspiracy theories? Depends on whether or not you want to live. Suzanne Jenkins creates a frightening scenario of a viral future that I wish would have been longer. I received a free copy but I can’t wait to read this series!

Laura and Mike and family leave Pennsylvania and almost everything they own to go west to avoid a "burn" that's supposedly done to residential areas to help wipe out a virus. That's what the government says but it's not the truth.

While I haven't read the series to which this is a prequel, I found this short story a definite hook. If you like dystopian reads about the bizarre and unthinkable happening to normal people - like a Stephen King story - combined with an evil American government spying on and killing off swathes of the population, give this book a try. The writing is good, the atmosphere is swift to build and full of tension.
I like that we get a female point of view, a mother responsible for family members and scared for her husband. Again, this normality makes the tale all the more disturbing.

I downloaded a free offer. This is an unbiased review.

A strong start to what looks to be a promising series. With many events being seeded ahead of time. The premise is dark, disturbing and scarily possible. I can only hope that one day we don’t reach this. Well written and looking forward to seeing how the series grows.

Hooked from the first page and still hanging on at the end. A terrifying solution to a new virus threat.
Would a government actually do this? My guess is a definite YES.
With my pulse pounding, I was enthralled and could not stop reading. Unfortunately, I find this a very believable story.
Another great story from the imagination of Suzanne Jenkins.
