Burn District 2 Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 118 ratings

After the New Year, Jenna Hayward regretfully accepted that she had waited too long to leave Jacksonville for her father's Arizona ranch. An unknown benefactor provided buses for the stragglers last minute exodus. While she waited to board with the other doubters, her sister, Laura, and father, Steve toiled along with the rest of the camp dwellers, attempting to turn the barren desert into a homestead. At the end of book #1, as they tried to settle in to a new life, waves of pandemonium hitting the camp became the new normal. The camp dwellers asked themselves if they'd found asylum in the desert, or was the illusion of safety a flimsy veil?

What a great story. But also a scary one because I can see it happening to our country. The whole time I was reading about all the fear, the having to pick up constantly to find shelter somewhere safe, and the human conflicts that go along with this type of situation, it was affecting me mentally and physically because it's so realistic.

Suzanne Jenkins is my favorite author, because no matter what topic or genre she writes about, the information is so intelligent and well put together and then brought to you in such a readable way, that even though it's fiction, you can also see it being realistic.

I don't know if there is going to be a sequel to Burn District 2, but I would love to know what happens to the people I came to know so well throughout this journey. The ending again, was Suzannes's signature twist ending. Just the way I love it!

This was a continuation of the first book and it was better in my opinion. You already know the key players and what they are doing. This book was interesting and something I hope to never have come to pass. But, it shows how much people are willing to and can do when put in different positions. I can't wait to read more about these characters and if they make it out alive.

The storyline slipped back and forth between a pretty good apocalyptic tale and a downright annoying description of women being catty and untrustworthy pains in the neck. The men were not analysed. They did good and exciting things while the womenfolk set up camp here and there. Overall, some good ideas and situations; not resolving into a thoughtful story.

Jenna gets rescued after being severely injured from a bomb explosion in Florida and is driven to her family in Arizona. The USA is at war internally, and the enemies, both foreign and American citizens, are bombing, called burnings, all over the country, and Jenna's family and friends find themselves on the move trying to escape. Excellent yet chilling book!

The United States is still in survival mode after a government overthrow/conspiracy that has resulted in extinction-level events for the US. With much of the population of the country east of California decimated by calculated purges and the destruction of food sources and utilities by government or terrorist forces, most people are in a constant state of flight just to survive. Suzanne Jenkins expands on her scenario from the previous books in the series as survivors struggle to rebuild and stay one step ahead of pursuit. The book is well-written and the suspense and action keep you glued to the pages.

A lot of ups and downs. Really can't figure out why the powers that be are chasing the group. There really isn't a reason unless everyone is insane and I doubt thats it.

What an awesome read! This novel kept me up late reading until the wee hours. I read all Ms. Jenkins presently has on offer now in the “Burn District” series. Now I’m anxiously awaiting book 3. I loved the ending, although ambiguous. It’s plain to see the next book needs writing. Having read the entire series, I feel like the main characters are my friends, and hope they all remain alive throughout the length of the series. Ms. Jenkins is a terrific author, with a versatility of style that makes all her novels unique and utterly readable.

Confession - I have not read the first book in the series so I may be missing some important storyline.

I found the plot and characters to be average I found that I tended to skim over passages looking for more action. Seemed kind of pedestrian to me. Don't feel that I am completely down on this book. I would rate it 3.5 stars if that were possible. I would read more by this author if it were free. There are so many excellent indie authors in every genre that I tend to not read good authors once I have experienced their work. By all means, give this author a try. After all she put a lot of effort into this book.

When all hell breaks loose and life as we know it has virtually disappeared, it is interesting how people from all different backgrounds handle the situaion. The action is continuous and keeps you reading and wondering how we would react if it was for real. Can't wait to read next book.

Good story but again ends suddenly so you need the next book to see how things end ( if they do!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Marginally better
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2024
This book is a little bit better than the first two but I haven’t really taken to any of the characters. Only marginally better because there was actually a moment that was quite emotional surrounding Laura’s sister Jenna.

There are so many characters in this series that it’s too difficult for the author to develop them adequately and there’s not enough time devoted to any one character to enable readers to get to know and understand them better. Some of the characters are really quite dull and others are so unlikeable, like Kelly, I find it difficult to establish why they would be invited along on the journey by the main character Laura Davis who having worked with Kelly should know better unless Kelly had a personality change once on the journey. But Laura always seems to be on the lookout for any woman who might try to steal her husband Mike from her and given that a few years previously Kelly made an inappropriate flirty comment to Mike in front of Laura there is no way I would have invited her along, whether or not to save her life! Having said that Laura isn’t particularly likeable anyway with her miserable paranoid outlook.

The apocalyptic story is somewhat far fetched that a US President would be crazy enough to want to annihilate the working classes of the US, let alone to bomb them across the whole country with napalm to achieve it.

As you would expect in the circumstances that people find themselves in there are frictions and disagreements but too many of the group decide to leave the relative safety of the group for some spurious and unconvincing reason which would put them in greater danger than staying with the group.

Overall I think the story isn’t that good and characters are underdeveloped. I will think long and hard before I decide whether or not to buy Burn District 3 but at the moment I’m leaning towards not bothering.

I read Burn District 1 and enjoyed it . I am only halfway through the second book and find it a bit hard going. I have to finish it to see what happens . I love Suzanne Jenkins books as a rule so I am hoping this gets better as I read on. Maybe it's just me who wants to get through to the end and see what happens

3.0 out of 5 stars Stuck with it only because I'd read the first and thought it might get better
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 22, 2018
I read to the end because I don't like to give up. But the story premise which is good is not supported by good character development or great writing. Too erratic and just not put together well enough.
