Review
I found it veryinteresting that the author suggested ammunition was becoming a new form of currency. In some of the Survival guidelines presented on theInternet, this is becoming a common recommendation.
As the fatherof three independent and successful daughters, an Engineer, Doctor, andLawyer, I'm thrilled to see this kind of story to be written by aclearly independent and worldly woman. Anyone avoiding this book, thinking a woman couldn't do an outstanding job with this subject matter will be making a big mistake and missing a great story.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2016This is a very original story line, in my opinion. I read a lot, and I have read a number of post-civilization as we know it stories, but this one offers a very unique take on it, and a very interesting one. Suzanne Jenkins is masterful at developing multitudes of characters and creating complex and interesting interplay between them to advance multiple plot lines and weave them in and out of one another skillfully. I am so sad there is not yet a follow-up book to this first offering in the Burn District series. But I have faith it will come in the future and I can hardly wait.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2015For the first book in a series it was a good read. The plot takes a not so far fetched plot of extremist taking over the government and waging a war on the people it doesn't like. Like other books it follows one main family and how they cope with the changes that happens to them. It throws in a politician and his family that knew what was going to happen and how they cope. I would have liked to have seen more about the politician and his daughter and how them handle the situation. Their plot line was more engaging and had more depth than the regular family. For further books I'd like to see more of the politics of the story which can be always be developed.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2019Not a favored format. I don't particularly like changing back and forth between characters. None the less the story was different and the characters were real. They didn't shine trying to cope with disaster.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2017I don’t usually read dystopian or post-apocalyptic novels as they involve scenarios that I feel are “too close to home”. But I greatly enjoyed book 1 of this series. I also read the prelude short story, which set the pace for book 1. Ms. Jenkins’ writing is clear & precise, the plot well-developed and easy to follow. There were a lot of minor characters that some readers may find difficult to remember in terms of who, what, when & where, although I found most of them memorable. I felt empathy for Laura & Mike and their family, hoping when the series ends that they all survive and thrive.
This novel shows the horrors that are incurred by governments when our constitutional system of checks and balances go awry, and demented, evil men are allowed to take control while good people do nothing.
I’ll be reading book 2 right now.

I received a complimentary Kindle copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2017A dystopian novel that will make you grateful that it is fiction (at least for now) and now our reality. This is a frightening look at what if scenarios by an author that easily fleshes out the details, and makes the reader want to turn the page for the next juicy tidbit and simultaneously put the book down and try to shake the details of what could come to be from our minds. Highly recommend for those looking for a unique, well developed and thought provoking plot!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2014I'm a big fan of Suzanne Jenkins and so very grateful that many of her stories are told in a series of books.
In Burn District: Yuma, as in the other books I have read by Ms. Jenkins, is contemporary in tone. Her stories are real, with a hint of "what if?", in this one it's what if someone of power and wealth chooses to abuse it by manipulating the system to their favor? What would become of our world? What kinds of strengths and weaknesses will that provoke? And the big question for me, are we really that far from this kind of situation now?
The Burn District series provokes thought and thoughtfulness. One question I have asked myself is, how would I react in this kind of situation? It's hard to tell, but the people in this story are truly put to the test.
I am very much looking forward to the next in the series. Thank you Suzanne Jenkins for sharing your gift of storytelling with us.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2016Burn District 1 by Suzanne Jenkins is the story of a family having to flee their home after Hurricane Sandy causes a deadly virus that has the potential to devastate the world’s population. The outbreak provokes a government overreaction. Fleeing their home in the Brandywine River Valley just ahead of government napalm attacks on infected areas populated by the poor, they make their way across the country to Arizona, where things are only marginally better, determined in the meantime to see that people know the truth.
A profound subject that, unfortunately, poor proofreading and line editing mars in this book. There are a number of grammatical problems that should have been caught in the proofreading stage, and the author does far too much telling rather than showing the reader what’s going on and how it impacts the characters.
With all the telling, though, the reader’s not given enough back story on the family to understand what motivates them, and the story tends to go back and forth in time which I found quite confusing.
Top marks for the theme, but I have to detract for the execution.

Quite scary concept but a good read. First in a series so ends suddenly

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb
A vividly written story. The author has done an excellent job with the character development. And she makes the progression of the storyline plausible. Excellent writing and I can't wait for book 2.

This story scares me and I am fearless. This author knows how to write in a way that cuts right to the point. It's exactly how I pictured life would become one day and is what my nightmares are composed of. Not scary as in "Boo" but as in "wow" I hope this never happens.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing
You must read the Burn District Short Story BEFORE reading this book otherwise there are holes in the story.
The story is a disturbing look at the breakdown of society in USA when a lunatic is in charge of the country who starts making bizarre decisions.
President Clarke is a lunatic who thought the economy of the country was going to hell in a handcart and he blames Hurricane Sandy. He along with his aides and advisors came up with using the hurricane as an excuse to try to take control of the underclass.
The hurricane is said to have brought a virus that manifests itself in soggy wood, although there is no evidence of the population suffering from any widespread virus. Nonetheless the President thinks that the socially disadvantaged are draining the USA economy, health services etc. The President’s solution is to obliterate that part of society by bombing their homes and localities using Napalm.
The bombing of these areas has obvious consequences that people start to flee. Society completely breaks down in the face of Armageddon and the only way of surviving is by looting whatever one can get one’s hands on to survive.
The story follows small family units and a group that are intent on finding out what is happening so they can warn the wider population. The families and the group’s paths cross as their aims of finding a new homestead intertwine. Survival is the name of the game and there is an innate distrust of everyone you meet. There are gangs stealing from looters, whilst the trust in the Government reduces with many thinking that their homes are bugged by the Government
The story doesn’t really have an ending so that along results in only three stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars good idea...not such a great delivery
I was really interested in the concept of this book, but it doesn't really fully deliver. The characters are not really detailed enough, they change their minds on a whim and the story junps around too much.
Since finishing I've discovered that the author normally writes romance, so that may explain the lack of depth to the story. Shame really as the idea is good.
