- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2024A quick intro to the Suzanne Jenkins experience. A taste of whatyou will read in the nexet series of her books. Interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2018This short story was an interesting read, particularly in light of current attitudes in the USA. A love story set against the backdrop of ethnic deportations in the USA, done by DNA regardless of whether you'd ever even visited the countries, it was a scarily realistic prospect, and made for an interesting read. A good story that I'd recommend to anyone who likes a short story with a twist of romance and a dollop of current affairs!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2021This is not a "typical" Suzanne Jenkins story. I am hoping that it is the beginning of a dystopian alternate reality of life in the US after 911. I will say that the theme of pathologically disturbed human beings as characters who believe that they are normal is apparent in this story. Strange story, but very compelling. I would read more.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2021This story is definitely different than I expected. A twist in the center made me keep turning the pages to see what happens. A very quick read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2017"Mixed" is an interesting short story for several reasons but primarily because it takes a 180 degree turn in the middle and becomes a completely different story than the reader is expecting. I enjoy twists like that and have come to expect them from Suzanne Jenkins. If you have read Jenkins' sci-fi series, Burn District, you will recognize the same kind of hunted tensions in this story. Good people, who through no fault of their own, are targeted. That's all I am going to say because I don't want to be a spoiler.
Suffice it to say that I thoroughly enjoyed "Mixed." The main character's narration grabbed my attention in the first few paragraphs, so I was immediately drawn into the story.
Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2020This story is just weird. I don't know if it is supposed to be a dystopian tale or reality. Guess I just didn't understand the point, and it is so short there was no room for development or explanation. Maybe it's just me. Someone else may enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2019The familiar story of a woman betrayed by a lover who thinks he can do better, merges gradually with a dystopian chiller. This draws on the September 11th events and imagines a fascist response. I really can't see any logic in getting rid of mixed race people from society, when it was pure blood Saudi Arabians who carried out and sponsored the bombings. Why would European blood be a problem?
We also seem to be missing a page in which leaving home is agreed upon and organised. And anyone who plots to set a house on fire at some future time cannot have any knowledge of whether they will harm an occupant. So the protagonist has become no better than the bombers. This is why arson is one of the most serious crimes.
I'm giving middling rating as the concept is good and nicely worked but the details let the short story get too confusing. This author has also written about a disease hitting the Jersey Shore after Hurricane Sandy, so I'll try that one.
I downloaded an ARC from Instafreebie. This is an unbiased review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2017I loved this book so much because of the twist in the middle of the story. I was assuming it was going to go one way and it turned so fast I wasn't sure if I knew what was going on after all. I love this kind of writing because you never know what's going to happen next. I love all of Suzanne's books because they are all so different but so good in their own ways. I'm always on the lookout for her next one.
