They have crafted articles for Blumhouse.com, The California Literary Review, and Queen Mob’s Teahouse. Their queer Californian horror fiction has been published in In Somnio: A Collection of Modern Gothic Horror Fiction, Antifa Splatterpunk, and Stories of the Eye. Stephen Case gets paid for teaching people about space, which is pretty much the coolest thing ever. He also occasionally gets paid for writing stories about space (and other things), which have appeared in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Daily Science Fiction, Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show, Shimmer, and elsewhere. His novel, First Fleet, is a science fiction horror epic (think H. P. Lovecraft meets Battlestar Galactica) published by Axiomatic Publishing and available on Amazon. Stephen holds a PhD in the history and philosophy of science and will talk for inordinate amounts of time about nineteenth-century British astronomy. His first work of nonfiction, Making Stars Physical: the Astronomy of Sir John Herschel, was published in 2018 by the University of Pittsburgh Press. He lives with his wife, four children, and two illegal backyard chickens in an undisclosed suburb of Chicago. Follow him on Twitter @StephenRCase or at www.stephenrcase.com.
I’m a native of southwestern Virginia and still dwell nearby,
perhaps deep within the limestone caves of the region.
I grew up a geek who loved science fiction, fantasy, comic
books and role-playing games–pretty much the whole nerd
gamut. I snagged an associate degree in Commercial Art at
Virginia Western Community College before joining the Army.
I spent four years in the U.S. Army as a SIGINT Analyst (if
you don’t know what that is, it sounds a lot sexier than it
really is.) I spent most of my time in uniform in Germany,
during which I concluded that it wasn’t the career for me.
After which I attended the Joe Kubert School of Graphic Arts
and Animation in Dover, NJ and graduated three years later.
I had intended on seeking a job in the comic industry–until
I got exposed to enough of it to rethink my intentions.
In the intervening years I subsisted on odd jobs and
periodic freelance art work. At some point I decided to try
to write. Much to my joy, I discovered I loved writing. I
really loved writing. During my free time in the last fifteen
years I’ve written nine novels and am halfway through the
tenth. In-between the novels I’ve written fifteen short
stories and have done a lot of fiction blogging.
After my second novel was thoroughly rejected by all the
usual companies as well as countless short story rejections,
my attention was grabbed by the exploding ebook market. So
instead of continuing my cycle of publisher rejections, I
decided to post my novel, Fourfold online. Since I
didn’t have the financial wherewithal to hire a cover
artist, I dusted off my art skills and painted it myself. I
have since published –with covers painted by me–my novels Mettle’s Forge and Blood Calls.
I have recently been published in the Neoglyphic anthology after being a winner in their national short story competition. My story “Boneyard Prophet” is published therein.
I remember in the third grade being asked that infamous question we all hear at one point or another. "What do you want to be when you grow up." Turns out, twenty-five years later I haven't quite finished growing up, but the answer to that question hasn't changed either. Raised in rural Arkansas, I learned the value of hard work and honesty, but what I wanted more than anything else was to write. For as long as I can remember, I've had a love affair with writing, and I doubt that passion will dwindle any time soon!
David Elsensohn has been a sales representative for a toy store, a web developer, a plumber's apprentice, a spotlight operator, a production artist, a pizza maker, and a student, but enjoys coaxing language into pleasing arrangements more than any of these. He does make fairly good sandwiches, however, and his chili recipe gets appreciative nods from friends.
He has been inspired by such language-coaxers as Tolkien, Howard, Leiber, and Gaiman, and aspires to return heroic storytelling to the forefront of fantasy fiction.
He lives in Los Angeles with an inspirational wife and the ghost of a curmudgeonly black cat.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2016Great short stories! This is a wonderful anthology of 20 really interesting stories by 20 different authors. I've read one or two at a time and they each are different in style and tone. Very cool that it's from a contest! If this is what these kind of contests generate, I'm looking forward to more! Love the illustrations!
