Amazon (The Parthian Chronicles Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,179 ratings

"Yet again Darman has produced a narrative that sweeps the reader along, never pausing for breath. A mixture of palace intrigue, bloody battles and historical nuance, this book mixes all our old favourite characters with some great new baddies, all seamlessly blended into a tale of derring-do."
British Army Rumour Service review, November 2019

Congratulations on reaching a landmark birthday, Pacorus. And to celebrate the gods have sent you a present. As your friends gather at Dura to commemorate the man who is a Parthian legend, the immortals send a storm from the east to plunge the empire into fresh conflict.
Do not be angry. They honour you and wish to see you doing what you do best, warlord, no matter how much blood is shed.
As friends are lost and the peace he has fought so hard for crumbles before his eyes, a weary Pacorus is forced to lead his army once more into battle. But the new campaign is different from previous ones, as old enemies become new allies and the world and certainties he has known are turned upside down.
Can he restore the man he has pledged his allegiance to, or will the powerful rebel alliance prove irresistible and create a dark chasm into which Parthia will be sucked?
‘Amazon’ is the ninth volume in the Parthian Chronicles and follows on from ‘The Cursed Kingdom’. A map of the Parthian Empire can be found on the maps page of my website: www.petedarman.com.

As usual very entertaining. The author knows the history of the Parthians and their relationship with the Roman’s well. The characters are interesting and memorable.

The only downside is that he doesn’t incorporate much of Parthian mythology and religion.

    Great read overall

Book 8 was quite a disappointment to me but this book is a return to crisp storylines and interesting intrigue and action with continuing character developments. Spartacus does not ring quite true as a character to me though it is probably my personal desire to see him be more than the two-dimensional warlord that he is depicted as. A nice twist here is the development of his wife's significant role in this story. Nicely written.

Excellent! Excellent! I live my life following the bushido. This is written with the main character almost having a form of chivalry/bushido as rules to live by. He will not taint his honor. This is well written, entertaining and decently researched historical fiction. Great 👍 stuff. I hope Gen Z reads this series, and they find their stones.

Would be a 5 instead of 4 if not for all the wardrobe and architecture descriptions. Good enough that I went and ordered the next book in the series, # 10. You'd think after reading the first 8 books in the series that the author could dispense with all the descriptive material regarding wardrobes and flag colors and buildings, etc. etc. It becomes a bit cumbersome.......

Once again, the ability to weave a story is amazing. As I read I try and make predictions in my mind of what will occur. I totally failed in my attempts. Congratulations on another well written book.

Battles galore, although surrounding stories less developed. More embellishments would have been appreciated. However, for fans of King zPacorus,, still souths the need to read about him.

Excellent extension of the previous books. A superior story teller. Tales of a country every bit as interesting as Rome

Auch dieser Band der Serie hat mir gut gefallen. Gut, nicht der beste Teil, aber der Autor hat immer noch gute Ideen, die den Leser überzeugen können. Man kann nur sagen: weiter so! Klare Leseempfehlung von mir

Another marvellous tale of the adventures of Pacorus, The Hidden Parthian King, who returns here to the foreground after a few episodes dedicated to the rise of his daughter Claudia, and that of his nephew Spartacus. Except this time, it is the turn of the formidable Queen Gallia to rise to the heights reserved for the Great Ones.
The historical background is the Tiridates Rebellion, sometime around 26 bc, and while the documented record is sketchy and second-source (Roman historians cared little for what didn't directly involve Roman affairs), the author breathes intense life and credibility into semi-fictional characters partaking in genuine or plausible events, de facto creating a saga worthy of Cassius Dio's chronicles.
    Darman, the Ambassador of Parthia.

I have followed the Chronicles from the beginning and Peter Darman set himself an enormous task attempting to follow the first four books (if you've read them you will know what I mean), it is very akin to the original stories and there is plenty happening to keep you interested. The book is called Amazon but they do not stand out any more than anyone else, the main character is Pacorus and he's back doing what he does best, leading from the front!
King of Kings Phraates has been usurped and Pacorus a stickler for having things done by the correct manner, fights to get Phraates back in charge, that is if he's still alive as he hasn't been seen in a long while. big battles aplomb with Pacorus in charge, but are the enemy more clued up on battle strategies than he gives them credit for?
Amazon has some excellent qualities almost Goosebumps on the arms stuff like the first four books, but doesn't quite sustain the excitement in the same way, hence 4 not 5 stars.
