What the Heart Wants contains two short stories by one of my favorite authors, AlTonya Washington, so it surprised me to find that I've had the book downloaded for over a year without reading it. Both stories deal with love and its sometimes difficult foundation of trust when individuals feel betrayed by secrets. But as the title says, what the heart wants....the finish to that is that the mind will not allow you to forget.

In Change of Heart, Garvey Fitzgerald and Monica Wilson are childhood friends who lose touch but reconnect as adults and begin a shaky relationship. Shaky because of Garvey's perceived slights by Monica, and Monica's mistrust because of Garvey's evasiveness and her reporter's instincts. Trust and betrayals, both real and perceived, make a relationship seemingly impossible. But what the heart wants.

In Daki, Omar Curtis and Dakita (Daki) Jamieson meet through Leo, Omar's brother and Daki's best friend. What could be a beautiful romance is hindered because of Daki's secret past, which she has overcome in the biggest way (financially), but not in others. Advised by both Leo and by her cousin, Melba, to tell Omar the whole truth about her past, Daki procrastinates until the truth comes to light in a most destructive way. In a moment, love can turn to hate, and trust to betrayal and unforgiveness. Are some hurts and deceptions irreparable, or is it that what the heart wants, it forgives and forgets?

These two short stories are two of AlTonya's finest works, and both were so well-written that they had me emotionally invested from beginning to end. Kudo's to AlTonya Washington.

The price of one...amazing. Both stories were great reads...with similar outcomes from almost the same point of view, everything is not as it seems, you can't judge a book by its cover and anything worth having is worth working for it even hea relationships
