- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2010Expectation of Beauty is a great coming of age young adult book.
17 year old Niambi Cook come from a long line of beauty women which include her grandmother. The cook women are known for there beauty which can be a blessing or curse and for the Cook sisters (Rosslle, Delva, and Leslie) it was a curse. Niambi has seen what beauty has brought to her family pain, shame and doubt. Niambi mother (Delvia) is raising Niambi not depend on her beauty but to be smart about life. Delva doesn't want what happen with her and her sisters to happen to Niambi.
Campion Greer is the son of Sean Greer CEO of Greer Communciation. Campion has a lot to live up since he is known as the spoil, rich kid who can get whatever he want.
Campion father thought that it was time for Campion to be thinking more about academics than athletics since he know that Campion is destined for more out of life, so he change his school schedule and got him into AP classes and since they was in the middle of year he would have to be brought up to speed.
Niambi Cook was ask to tutor him to bring him up to speed. Niambi who doesn't particular care for the Greer's especially Campion she think he is a playa and just use people to get back, of course he has had his share of girls who throws themselves at him, but we all know the saying you can't judge a book by it cover but in this case you can't judge a person by things you think you know and that can go both for Camp & Niambi.
Niambi let Camp from the beginning that she doesn't like him and Camp being the type of person he is ask the question why and she tell him because of your last names. Altonya take you on a journey of young love through this book with Camp & Niambi they both have issue to deal with because of their last name. This is a well-written, tender story about a man & woman learning to respect and trust each other. One night while at her aunt club Niambi sees a woman being attack and has kept quite about.
The more time Camp & Niambi spent together the more she see that she was wrong about Camp that he is not what she and the entire town thought, but we have to learn and see people for ourselves. If listening to his friend he would think that Niambi is girl pertaining to be innocent all the time but once he get to know her Camp realize that she is a sweet young lady. They both fight there attraction to each other but in the end they give in to there feeling for each other and fall in love. I can see several books from with Camp & Niambi friends, and I would love to see the parents of Camp & Niambi have stories the sisters and father, uncle and grandfather for that matter. He is a pistol as well.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2011Another wonderful detailed and well written drama by Altonya.
What I enjoyed about this was that although the main characters were teenagers there was an adult theme which ran through right up to the last page. It took me no time to finish it and I wanted more... The relationship with the sisters were so real and touching, but again love previled and honesty won in the end and true family loyality, love and committment to their neice/daughter is tremendous.
Just like Altonya's other novels there is often a sense of dread with the presence of the perpretator and victim and it just goes to show that not all those who are rich (beyond belief) have no values, principles or morales. This novel makes no distinction with those that have and those that don't.
Both young characters were depicted in such a way that Antonya takes you into their lives, ways of thinking and how their feelings for each other grows in depth, it makes you want to route for them.
Again it is so rare to find a Novalist who recognises that dark skinned women can be beautiful, can be featured as main characters and who displays depth, sensitivity and can be feisty! I loved this book, and would recommend it to everyone.
Altonya, thanks for sharing such a wonderful new venture in your writing about young love which seems as if it will last a long time... More please

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2010I absolutely LOVED this story! Just hoping that there will be a part 2 or something in the future. I like that they were teenagers, I love young love but I'd like to see them in 5-10 years...married with kids or something lol. Kinda like Darrien Lee did with All That And A Bag of Chips.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2013I was pleasantly surprised...sometimes Ms. Washington can be over the top with her "fire and desire". I think in her efforts to make it 'hot' for adult readers, the story line and plot get shorted for the sex scenes. Even though this story centered around youth, they were very mature and together youth. It was interesting enough to make the reader wonder what happened next...
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2015A true love story. Young black love is so amazing. I'd read this book a again.
