Apollo influenced Greek culture and shaped history through the sacred oracles issued at Delphi, Didyma and Claros inspiring his followers and soldiers who wielded the Pen and Sword inspired by the words issued within the oracles they received guiding the creation of what was to become a shared Greek world.
Soldiers Of Apollo looks at those figures in the Greek-speaking world and their lives of duty and service to the Sun god Apollo, the city-state and Greece.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2019British author Daniel Buckley has written several books about Greece, ancient history, Sicily, Atlantis, Egypt and variable short stories. He offers no biographical information by which we can associate his interpretation of history and mythology, but he comes across as a man who wishes to share the importance of ancient history in the way we view our present.
The intensity of the history of Apollo and the subsequent impact on Grecian history and way of life is related in a classroom manner – many facts and ideas well worth investigating. In addition to an intense discussion of the god Apollo, Buckley discusses the god’s followers - general, emperors, kings, philosophers, statesmen, and poets – all influenced by his oracles and sacred sites, shaping history.
The problem with the book is the manner in which the information is published: there are many incomplete sentences, broken paragraphs, dangling letters of the alphabet, and problems with focus that make the book difficult to read. The information is plentiful, just not very accessible. An altered edition, one with very careful editing, would likely make a book that would be a fine resource for those who desire to learn about the wondrous god Apollo. Grady Harp, April 19
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2019SOLDIERS OF APOLLO by Daniel Buckley, Naomi Johnson (Editor) is presented as a rather dry book re-telling of historical events. As the author endeavors to impart his knowledge of the Greek god Apollo, he reveals much about his passion and interests. The book however, reads much like a classroom lecture, or awkwardly constructed term paper. While sharing a ton of information, the execution of the writing is sometimes difficult to get a handle on. There are many facts disseminated in this book, along with an examination of the impact Apollo had on his time, as well as a look at his many followers. Apollo had a huge impact on Grecian history, along with his oracle and related sacred sites. If looking for detailed information this is a great book, but the presentation could be better. Overall, an interesting if sometimes difficult to read book.
