The Fletcher (The Arrow of Artemis Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 288 ratings

Kyri is a fletcher, following in the footsteps of her father, and his father before him. However, fate is a fickle mistress, and six years after the death of her mother, she's faced with the fact that her father is dying as well. Forced to leave her sheltered little homestead in the woods, Kyri discovers that there is more to life than just hunting and making master quality arrows. During her journey to find a new home and happiness, she struggles with the path that seems to take her away from the quiet life of a fletcher. She learns that sometimes the hardest part of growing up is reconciling who we were, with who we will become.

This was a fascinating book. The characters were well-developed and unique. The writer's style reminded me of a series by Catherine Wilson called "When Women Were Warriors". It has a lot of the same feel in the story telling, which is a good thing. The take on the Amazon lifestyle was typical and consistent with other such books, but that really did not detract from my enjoyment. However, the downplay of sex in a lesbian romance novel made me wonder if I was reading a young adult story. I decided that it didn't matter because the romance that was portrayed in the book was captivating and tender. The story really didn't need it.

While the ending was a little weak, it was still an ending. The author left a lot of room for the next book in the series. Books without a real ending, simply because they are part of a continuing series, irritate me. If you choose not to read the next book in the series, you have no closure to what you did read. This book doesn't fall into that trap.

The bottom line is I thought the story was great, the writing was well done, and I will anxiously await the next book in the series.

This debut novel is the first of three in The Arrow of Artemis series. With that in mind, the first installment has the lead MC Kryi in a coming of age story. It's brilliant. The world building aspect that starts in this book only gets better from here. I can't wait for books 2 and 3 to get released throughout this year.

Kyri is an intensely likable character. Innocent in one breath and strong in character for the next. She's a very complex character. But it's her heart that is the strongest draw in my opinion. The cast of secondaries is long and diverse. Kyri really finds her way and her footing in this first book.

The ending might have you say, wait, what? But don't fret. Book 2 picks up almost immediately from there. It's a small miracle in my opinion that the publisher is able to push all 3 books in one year. So we, the reader, only have to wait till June to see what happens next.

Absolutely, without doubt, loved this book.

Great beginning for a series. I really liked the MC and how focused she was on her goals. There was a romantic interest with significant chemistry, but it was not a romance novel. I felt that "kid" (like Han Solo with Luke Skywalker) and "Amazon sister" were overused in the first half of the story, but they were not used as often in the second half. The next two books should be pretty good and I'm looking forward to them.

I had to read something while surviving a boring event and it ended up with me just ignoring everything else and binging the book for that entire day. Hook, line, and sinker!

It was a lovely book about Amazons and I enjoyed every bit of it. It was... "simple" considering it's a fantasy book and discussed more of the life of an Amazon but looking at the reviews and the Author's words for the second book, I both dread and eager to continue to Book 2! I liked Book 1 mainly cos sometimes it's just fun reading a casual fantasy book--and then get you hyped and scared for the next one haha.

Overall a pleasant experience with good writing and loveable characters. There's at times I wish there's more happening but the simplicity and pleasantness of it was good enough for me.

Loved it!!!! Stayed up waaayyy too late reading, reading, reading. I think the relationships are what made this book so enjoyable along with the humor. I felt the story evolved with authenticity. I felt I was on the journey of exploration, discovery, and coming of age right along with Kyri. I am anxious to see how this story is going to evolve. I felt there was a mix of conclusion and cliffhanger in the end...making me wanting more. It is not often I finish a book in less than a week during the school year. Thank you for a great journey. I can't wait to experience it to its conclusion.

Heyla! I loved this book. I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan of books written in First Person, and that's usually because, from my experience, they aren't written well. However, I couldn't put this book down. I consumed it in less than 24 hours, and not realizing how newly released it was, I went on a desperate search for the next book in the series. I will be waiting for it to release in June. I have already recommend The Fletcher to a large group of friends, and I look forward to reading more books from K. Aten. Great read!

I will say first off I haven’t read any fanfic so I was able to enjoy this novel without any other context and honestly enjoyed it immensely. The story itself was rich and intriguing. The dialogue was a bit stilted at times, and possibly felt a bit immature, but the story kept moving forward. The world that was created was robust. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Coming of Age Read
Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2018
Refreshing and wonderful read. Kyri is a fletcher’s daughter thrown into circumstances which place her life at risk. Thanks to her father’s training, Kyri is ready to take on whatever challenge comes her way. I loved her mix of innocence and confidence, of awe and strength.
Lesbian fantasy novels are not usually on my must read list but K. Aten’s superlative effort may change this. I was grabbed from the opening scenes and fell easily into the lives of Kyri, Shana and Ori. I admit the movie Wonder Woman helped me to easily visualize each scene when Kyri enters the Amazon Telequire tribe but that tribute in no way takes away from this well written and well paced novel.
Don’t be intimidated by the cast of characters listed in the opening pages of the novel. There may be many players but they slip seamlessly into the narrative.
The novel builds from strength to strength as we watch Kyri “ an almond tree growing in an orchard of apples” find her place in the world. Her purity and sincerity are traits impossible to resist. It will be a pleasure to watch her come into her own and acknowledge her growing attraction to one warrior in particular in the Telequire tribe in future novels.
My favourite read thus far in 2018. So well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favourite trilogy!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 13, 2019
This is the first book of a trilogy and without reading the next two I am confident this is my new favourite trilogy! This first book was very much setting up the characters and world building - I loved it! What an amazing and creative world. The main character whilst very naive to the world is a strong and talented woman, plus she has some very strong and talented women around her. It is beautiful. The end of this book felt more like a pause than the end of a book so I cannot wait to get started on the next two books. Would definitely recommend!

Reviewed in Canada on April 1, 2018
Wow, how refreshing to see a Lesbian fantasy novel that did not give out free copies for a multitude of reviews. This book hit my checkmarks on a number of levels. First check - Amazons! Second check - Archery! I read it in one night, so yes, it was captivating. The author did a good job analyzing the layers of feelings surrounding murder vs. killing for protecting and the main character's wresting with this justification. I feel the book could have used more detailed descriptions of the scenes, buildings, people, dress, and landscapes etc. I also found that she slipped into her own world a few times with use of language and judgements that would not have been present in a pre-industrial and all woman community. Overall a great read. XWPesque. I'm looking forward to book two!
