Fairlight (The Fairlight Novels Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

For centuries the witches in the city of Fairlight, and the vampire covens have struggled for power, even though for over two hundred years they supposedly have come to a workable truce. At the age of twenty Velvet Washington, a witch of superior skills, decides the vampires are breaking the spirit of the truce by turning victims in order to increase their numbers. Any witch, she believes, knows the power in numbers. Unfortunately, the Council doesn’t care and insists she mind her own business and stop the night stalking in graveyards. However, Velvet thinks it is her duty to halt the monthly risings of the undead.
Wilder, a master vampire and his sired partner Jerome, trail her for a few months trying to figure her out. She is a witch that seems as driven as a slayer. Slayers, who just happen not to reside in Fairlight anymore. Intrigued by her skills and commitment Wilder approaches her. . Wilder has not lost any of his to her sword, so he can be generous enough to warn her to cease at once because the Coven as a whole, though reluctant to risk incident with the council, will get around to stopping her, and to Velvet the only way a vampire can make her stop anything is to kill her. Wilder finds her attitude ridiculous and tells her the folly of her single minded prejudice and extreme arrogance. He tries to convey she is short sighted in what she can accomplish with her talents, and what she could do for Fairlight as a whole community, rather than just for witches.
Velvet ignores her grandmother’s advice and warnings not to trust a vampire, especially one she finds so attractive in the moonlight.

Enjoyed the book, but it was choppy. Alot of big jumps in sequence and timing. Really glad it was not a serial novel.

This is a dark but often funny series, with great dialogue & interesting characters. The plot is somewhat convoluted but the Bottom Line is Ms Hall is a gifted storyteller who can mesh many characters & subplots into an engaging tale. Hopefully, Book 5 is forthcoming soon.

What a great book. This one had humor, action, intrigue, and a kick a$$ heroine. If that's your sort of thing, I highly recommend you check this out. You won't be disappointed.

Above is a good summary of the book. Velvet is a strong witch that has her own ideas about what is right and wrong. She feels that it is her duty as a witch to make sure all is right and all wrongs are taken care of. She wants all people (humans and supernaturals alike) are safe. She goes about it the wrong way in the beginning but straitens herself out. Wilder is a vampire. He sees what Velvet is doing and feels that she's going about in the wrong way in the beginning. He pursues Velvet in a romantic light to control her at first but then falls for her. Velvet falls for him too much to her grandmother's dismay. This book is really well written but has a few kinks. (Sequencing. There are a few jumps here and there that just don't make sense) The plot is solid and the story line is pretty solid. That has to deal with the sequencing issues mentioned above. The characters are well written. Some characters make you want to give them a kick in the butt and other make you want to hate them because they feel that real. Overall, a good read. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
