'Answering the Call' is a short novel in the 'Surviving the Call' series. It opens with a mysterious and philosophical prologue hinting at various story lines that have come from a previous series. It mentions portal prophecies, guardians and a homeland that has obviously suffered a catastrophe but is now being rebuilt. The characters are making hard decisions about their futures with the understanding they will need to go their separate ways. The reader is then thrust into a modern scene with women watching a horror film while enjoying each others’ company. Many characters are introduced but only snippets of a few identities are introduced.

The story switches again to a group of vampires engaged in lighthearted banter on a work site while searching for something among heat and explosions of rock. They discover a complex dial although it soon proves to be more problematical. An ancient legend predicts that ‘a baby will be born’ and ‘evil will walk freely once more’.

The author creates entertaining dialogue and interesting characters. Although the story is the first in the series, it doesn’t stand alone and readers need to have read earlier books to understand the characters and their histories and the overall plot. I wish I’d started with the six book ‘Portal Prophecies’ series to fill in the missing links because the writing is excellent and the story and characters are intriguing.

I picked up this particular book by this author because I loved her take on the Four Horsemen in another series and was interested to see what would happen with the 7 deadly sins. I didn't realize this series was linked to a different series, The Portal Prophecies, which I haven't read yet. I didn't have trouble keeping up having not read that series because this book was well written, but now I know when I finished this series, I will be going back and reading The Portal Prophecies because it seems like an interesting read.

This was more an introductory, world building book to the series, introducing characters and the basic premise, but it did make me eager to read the next book. Like the Four Horsemen books that I read, this is a totally fresh, new take on the seven deadly sins, which is something I love from this author

Though this book is labeled as Book 1, it really isn’t a stand alone. I got the distinct impression Answering The Call was really the second book and flowed from book I haven’t read. Because of that the cast of characters was a little confusing and the myriad of subplots a bit hard to keep straight.
Answering the Call starts with a wonderfully tense opening scene which spins it’s tentacles throughout the story, holding it together and drawing the reader forward. I think the plot has great potential and anticipate the rest of the series will bear that out.

“Answering the Call” is a riveting first book in the series which tells a story of Jade, a reluctant heroine, who finds herself in the thick of it: ancient evil is about to awaken, and she’s the person, in whose hands lies the fate of the whole world. In this story, the world of the supernatural is masterfully interwoven with an ordinary world, which makes it even more interesting to read. Prophetic dreams, parallel universes and supernatural creatures inhabiting them immerse you completely in the narration, and soon you realize that you can’t turn the pages fast enough. I already can’t wait for the following books in the series!

Jade, who is dating a vampire, has disturbing dreams that lead her to believe an ancient evil is about to emerge again. And guess whose stuck with solving that problem?

I picked up Book One in this new series because I had enjoyed the author's novella, Shot Through the Heart. However, what I found here felt disjointed and lacked world building. After doing a little research, I realized that this short novella is based on her series, The Portal Prophesy. If the description had noted that I would have bought The Portal Prophesy series first. Though you get an inkling of the world Jade lives in and some of the problems the characters face, the story assumes you already know their backstory and left me not particularly caring about any of them. And yes, there is a prologue, but it only gets you up-to-date on where the characters are at, but no sense of where they came from or the world in which they live.

This author writes really well and based on the other novella I read of hers, she can create wonderful worlds and characters. However, there either needs to be a note in the blurb about the previous series or she needs to integrate enough backstory for the reader to fully appreciate the world she has created.

The story mixes magic and supernatural beings with a touch of the darkside. An ancient legend predicts that a baby will be born and evil will walk freely once more. Jade, who is in a relationship with a vampire finds herself right in the middle of it.
We're introduced to a lot of characters and at first, I was a little overwhelmed, but the story is well written and keeps you entertained. Prophetic dreams, parallel universes and supernatural creatures, what more can you ask for?

I love this author’s writing style, and she didn’t disappoint with this book either. As expected from a first book in the series, there is a lot of world building and character introduction, but in my opinion it only pulls the reader more into the story. I wished I read the Portal Prophecies before I started this one, but it’s never too late. As much as I love to continue, I think I’ll read the other series first before picking up the second book. Regardless of what you decide, you’ll be in for a wonderful story with excellent writing! I definitely recommend this book.

This book introduces an intriguing cast of characters that I assume battled together in a previous series. The main character, and Chosen One, appears to have a long and difficult road ahead of her. Hopefully, her diverse group of friends can set aside their differences and work as one to defeat the rising evil in their world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Answering the Call

Although this is the first book in a new series the characters were first created in The Portal Prophecies series. It's not necessary to understand this book but reading that series first would give a greater appreciation of the characters and their back story.
Answering the Call is very much an introductory book to this series. In an interesting and clever way, it highlights the nature of the battles that lie ahead for Jade and her friends without giving too much away. My appetite is fully whetted and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
    A quick, imaginative read.

An interesting short story about a girl named Jade, who is in a relationship with a vampire named Gavin.
We watch as Jade is caught up in a prophecy, which deals with seven deadly sins. We are introduced to a small leprechaun name Tobias is he going to be a help or will he be a hindrance to Jade?
This is the first book in this new series.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fast-paced, character orientated read which you'll struggle to put down.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2017
Jade's dreams are unsettled. At first she blamed the horror movie she and her friends had watched, but sleep was something she desperately needed, and with her father about to make his position in equal rites of races from all realms known, it was something in short supply. She had no choice  but to live the nightmare, but it was in fact a message, one destined for her. A new future is being written, new dangers and adversaries are rising, and these seven are ancient, dating back to the time sin was named. There are seven of them and she must find the strength to survive them all.
Surviving the Sins, answering the call, is the beginning of what promises to be an interesting and involved series. I was introduced to this author's work when I came across Tomoiya's Story: Escape To Darkness, which I enjoyed reading, and this book was no different. I am actually going to circle back to The Portal Prophesies series, as I believe it comes first and I am eager to read more work from C.A. King. Answering the Call is a fast-paced, character orientated read which you'll struggle to put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A whirlwind of a read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 28, 2017
This was a real whirlwind of a read: fast paced, unexpected and a great mix of darkness and humour. C.A. King has such a great imagination- her books are always so fresh and surprising and 'Surviving the Sins' was no exception.

Even though this is the first book in the series, I believe it carries on from King's Portal Prophecies series. I'd recommend reading this first- I hadn't done so and found it a little difficult to keep track of the characters and their relationships at first.

Overall, a great escapist read and an exciting start to a promising series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Fabulous! Fabulous!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2018
The dream always started the same way — with a ringing phone. But Jade never had the courage to answer it. For she feared that if she did, she would discover that these ‘dreams’ that were plaguing her sleep, were not actually dreams at all.

I fell in love with C.A King's storytelling skills with The Portal Prophesy series, and I have been a big fan of hers ever since. Surviving The Sins: Answering the Call, was everything I hoped it would be and then some. C.A. King never fails to impress.

Jade has been on quite a journey since The Portal Prophecies, and it was wonderful to be in her world again. Jade is one of those characters that went through one of the most significant changes in the series, and now it seems she is facing an even bigger one. She isn’t as so self-assured as some of the other characters, but I think this makes her all the more real in the telling.

I was great to be back with Gavin and the newly reformed Simon. The story itself was very intriguing, and I cannot wait to get my hands on Book 2!

    I Highly Recommend.
