- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2018This is first book in the Portal Prophecies fantasy series. It focuses on the realm of the paranormal magic human protagonists of the series. Besides introducing us to their world, culture and daily life, it weaves the tale of the dangers that exist when those people in power decide their status is more important than the sharing of knowledge. This is especially relevant when that hidden knowledge includes the extent of people's magical paranormal abilities, plus the history of their world's Guardians, Keepers and Portals.
This book introduces us to the "The Prophecies". As well as realms beyond the current world. This includes one that poses a sinister threat, and another that will become their refuge.
If you get confused about the variety of supernatural creatures, paranormal beings and magical concepts, just refer to the handy glossary at the end of the book. This story is great read!
Portal Prophecies is one of my favourite fantasy series. The six book series creates a vast universe of interconnected realms, all crafted from the vivid imagination of author C.A. King. It is full of the supernatural: From magical creatures and otherworldly beings, to humans with paranormal abilities, all of which traversing a variety of interconnected distinctly textured worlds, including our own technologically driven world.
The deeply engaging journey is filled with magic, the paranormal and the supernatural. The main human protagonist characters are coming of age, learning about themselves, the bonds of friendship, love, treachery, and the dangers presented when those in power in different realms are clinging to status and personally desires at all costs, above the welfare of their people. Hence it is the people, magical beings, portals, guardians, keepers and prophecies, that are the source of the dangers and the keys to salvation.
Will our protagonists save our world and this entire magic universe from oblivion? You'll have to read this bombastic series to find out! I can't wait to finish reading the final volume. 😊
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2015This is a classic coming-of age tale about one girl and her experience as she goes through the painful, mostly awkward moments of becoming a woman. The main character seems to be the only one with a bit of pragmatism which is humorous as the story goes along in this fantasy world. She experiences drastic events with her friends that are easy to relate to for any pre-teen, because at that age everything is drastic. It is a fun read and it is filled with several worlds all combined into one. However, I believe it sometimes gets lost in the details. The author is creating a picturesque world but some things, I believe, should be left to the imagination. I would recommend this for anyone interested in fantasy or a good under dog story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2017This was an interesting story and I liked the different powers the characters received, but unfortunately it fell short for me because of the numerous typos and grammar issues. The book needs a good proofread. The first half moved along at a steady pace, but the last quarter of the book was very slow and it would have been nice to know where on Earth they came through the portal. Sometimes I felt that the actions scenes were a bit rushed without a build up of suspense. As for the ending, well as others have said it just stops in the middle of a scene. I'm not sure if I'll pick up the other books.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2023In a near-Utopian society, Willow is just an orphan farmgirl with a secret tattoo. Or that's what she thought. When worlds collide, the carefully-crafted pretense falls, and Willow and her companions discover there is far more to the universe--and to themselves--than they ever dreamed possible. History is revealed, new friends join the group, and an epic quest begins.
This book is incredible. It has all the fantasy tropes you know and love--magic, lore, prophesies, secrets, strange new worlds, and an unlikely hero chosen to save them all--and bends them into a new and intriguing story of discovery and potential for redemption. I can't wait to see where the story goes next!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2018Great world-building in this coming-of-age Cinderella-style story, filled with magic and dystopian elements. A fun-filled read, with lots of details. I wasn’t a fan of the way it ended, but I understand the author’s reason for doing so. I loved the concept of stretching the sky. I especially liked the character of Clairity and her support of Willow. This is an enjoyable read for those that love folklore and fairy tales.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2018I love fantasy novels with a unique take and a strong message, so this book was exactly my cup of tea. The idea of the secret history and ancient races was fascinating to me and the way it was presented very entertaining. It’s hard to create a special, likeable and novel world when it comes to such a popular, competitive genre, but in my opinion C.A.King managed to create a style that has the power to grasp the reader, a style you wish to return to.
The author proves over and over again that her fantasy is rich and that she has a lot of wisdom to give to the world. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to delve into the next novels in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2016I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Given the amount of drek that is published every day on Amazon, it is a refreshing find to discover a book that's well written and executed. I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2017Prophecies. The Keeper, the Seeker, the Chosen.... Seems like there are always prophecies...
I like the fact that the prophetic tellings need to be deciphered. The powers are cool. But the book needs edits. Typos, grammar, pacing.
Pacing is key. There's talent here, for sure, you can see it in the storytelling. Needs polish.
Ending was disappointing. Don't leave me in the middle of a scene - it makes it seem too commercial. I'd rather buy the second book because I loved the first, not because you left me hanging like the middle of a TV show at the commercial.
I'll definitely check out the "look inside" for the next edition.

4 Stars
A Keepers Destiny is the first book in The Portal Prophecies Series by C.A King. This is a Y.A fantasy/paranormal adventure that is full of action, magic, self-discovery and drama. The author tells tales full of mystical wonder; the book incorporates her re-imagining of many of our myths, legends, tall-tales and unexplained phenomena- which is incredibly original and clever.
Willow is an orphan who has grown up in a magical place, not knowing what really happened to her parents, and doesn’t really understand the world she lives in. The past is very much a mystery to all but a few inhabitants who still remember. She has grown up hearing voices in her head. They have helped guide and look out for her, for as long as she could remember. She feels quite imperfect, unremarkable- just very ordinary and somewhat boring.
‘Willow opened a wooden chest and picked up a small hand mirror. She hated her reflection. To her, all it showed was imperfections. Her eyes were a green and blue mix with speckles of red throughout. Everything else she saw, she considered unremarkable. Her skin was a lightly tanned, bronze colour, even though most of it never saw the sun and the places that did, had freckles. She was above average in height. Work kept her in a physically fit state, which she felt made her somewhat less feminine than other girls. Her long, curly hair hung down around her shoulders. Today, it was blonde with a few blue and black strands. As with all girls, her hair colour would change on its own, as if it were matching her moods, abilities, or personality. She could have any number of combinations of hair colours in a day. In fact, last night she went to bed with pure white hair. This would continue until her sixteenth cycle, when her hair would choose the permanent colour it wanted to be.’
Everyone in her world had ‘abilities’, powers that they would gain as they matured. Most people gain their powers/magical ability by the time they reach their sixteenth cycle. No one ever really knew what their ability would be, some abilities were incredibly useful or entertaining; while others were pretty much useless. Willow hope to gain abilities that would make her special or which she could use to better her position within the society.
“Like most of the underaged, she didn’t even know what her abilities were yet. When she was younger and out with her friends, they would often sit and dream about different abilities and which ones they wanted. They were all told the signs were there somewhere - subtle indications of the future and, if they looked hard enough, the answer was there. Once she sat in a corner, concentrating for a full evening, trying to make something, anything happen. Falling asleep out of boredom was the only result. It was important to have the right abilities. It meant the difference between acceptance or a long, hard life of work and, at times, ridicule. If one could do something dazzling or entertaining, one might even get to stay on the castle grounds in accommodations which were far more comfortable than anything the town could offer. Of course, on the flip side of the equation, some abilities were considered useless.”
There society is ‘governed’ by the authority, with many strict rules and regimented activities for the citizens. Everyone had to contribute to their world, according to their abilities. Willow felt sure that there was more to life than this, she often dreamed of a greater destiny.
“There was work to do and if she wasn’t on time, it would mean trouble. The Council wanted things done a certain way - their way. As they often said when she stepped out of line, “Our lives are like a puzzle. We all have to find the place where we fit in to make the bigger picture whole.” Her duty to the common good was assigned to her. She grew fruits and vegetables. That was her place in the puzzle. She needed to accept it and to do the very best she could. But still, she couldn't help but feel there was something more, something she was missing, something else she was destined to do.”
When her world comes under threat, Willow and a group of her friends set out on a quest to save all of existence. She discovers more than she could ever have imagined; not just about herself, but about her world and that of all of existence. We learn along with her of the ancients, the guardians, the portals, the different realms, an evil king, a whole lot of different races and beings- and all the predictions contained in a book called The Portal Prophecies that can help them in their quest. The prophecies are the key to their success and survival; will they be able to decipher them in time?
This story is quite fast paced, very detailed and descriptive- with a complex and multi-layered plot. I had a little trouble ‘getting into the story’ because there was just so much going on to keep track of while the foundations to the book and series were laid out. But after about half way I settled into the story more and began to really enjoy it.
I liked the characters and enjoyed watching them develop and grow in confidence as the story progressed.
I am quite fascinated by this first book and the foundations it has laid for the rest of the series. So, I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Thank you Ms. King!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
Have to say, I picked this up because I will be meeting this author at an up coming signing and I wanted to read something from them before the event. I am so happy I did. This book was amazing and series is going to be so freaking cool to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books I've picked up all year
E Pepvo Eco Glay Callum, The council above all others. This was what the people were told the letters meant above the large iron gate. And the council ensured this was held true. They were the strongest, they were the best, such was enforced. And who would question it, people were told they no longer needed to learn, why read when you have an assigned duty to fulfil. Little by little freedom was being taken away, no one remembered when the arena was last open, or when children were permitted to play outside. The truth is, the council were just looking after themselves, protecting their lifestyle which they feared would lose if the people realised how strong their own abilities really were. They fooled themselves into thinking their actions would avert a prophecy of disaster, they were wrong and their own actions left them unprepared for the danger.
The first thing I did when I finished this book was to buy the next one in the series. I loved everything about this book, the vivid characters, the forming relationships, the developing powers, lore, realms, history, magic. The list goes on. I read a lot and this is easily one of the best books I have picked up this year. I rarely get this excited about a series, but this is a must read. brilliantly written, well-paced, immersive, honestly, I can't find the words to praise this book enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story. Fast paced, and enjoyed!
I picked this book up because the premise interested me a lot. The author is in some of the groups on facebook that I frequent. I was a little unsure after the start. But, I was soon reading more and more and found myself hooked into the story. It might be YA, but I think anyone of any age can enjoy this.
There were some beautiful descriptions, although like the beginning, I wasn't totally hooked on them. I liked to be able to put my own spin on things and sometimes it was just a little much for me. I'm a script writer by trade, so for me sometimes the prose can be heavy, it's nothing bad at all from the writers POV a job very well done here. The story itself was fast paced, and really entertaining. Something I wanted to read every day. Which takes a lot of effort when I work full time.
I believe there was some really unique situations in here, with the MC. She was good to get to know, and to spend time with. I think there was a good different enough for her to stand apart from her sister, and that really helped me identify with them. Did I prefer one to the other... of course. But we all have our fav characters. I wasn't phased by the ending, and it leads well into the next in the series, which I can't wait to read as well :) I'm glad I picked this up.

1.0 out of 5 stars The story line is good but it needs editing
The story line is good but it needs editing. Lots of run on sentences. Grammer definitely needs to be reviewed.
The ending was disappointing as it just stopped. Even though the story and characters are good I will not be buying the rest of the series.
