- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2017Frost Bitten is Book Three in The Portal Prophecies Series. None of the books are standalone as each book continues on from where the previous books finish. Each book is based on a different prophecy and the entire series, delves deep into the understanding of magic and self-discovery, all the while questioning the right versus wrong equation on personal levels.
Readers will find some new explanations for old tales, myths, legends, folk lore and unusual phenomena that could just make them question the validity of stories we all have grown up with.
Although Willow and her friends have survived Halloween, they find themselves under the watchful eyes of others. Everywhere they turn it seems that everyone seems to be against them. They are on a new mission to aid Lance in recovering his sister, Sissy. As they find new portals other worlds open up with new problems and new discoveries. The prophecies leave more questions than answers.
Frost Bitten has a Christmas / Winter Wonderland theme running through it. The problem is that not only is Sissy missing but Santa is missing too! What will happen to Christmas if they can’t find him? As Willow becomes more mature and knowledgeable about the worlds surrounding her she feels more and more alone. Her emotions are on a rollercoaster ride: sometimes she is way up high and then she comes crashing down. Making her feel confused are the mixture of emotions she feels between William, Mike and Lance who each feel and act like they have some kind of claim on her. She begins to realise she has to decide who it is she loves and wants a romantic relationship with. The problem is how does she decide or choose? How can she tell her emotions apart when she’s been alone all her life with no examples of love or friendship to guide her? Will they ever stop warring with each other for her?
Besides finding Santa and saving Christmas, Willow also needs to find out who the ‘secret’ journalist is and why they have been writing false reports and accusing Willow and her team of being up to no good. Due to this the residents in the city who should have been living an easier life after the events of Halloween are uneasy and relationships are strained. Can she and her team find out who the journalist is and why they are doing this to them? Can they save themselves? What will the next prophecy unfold?
Frost Bitten is just as action packed and enthralling as the previous two books. The characters are still developing and growing in skills and maturity. I really like the way C A King takes long established stories (like Santa) and injects her own creativity into them to embellish them, making you think of another aspect to them and making them fit into Willow’s world.
This book is again about Willow as a teenager finding herself and sorting through her own emotions as well as learning to distinguish between and cope with the emotions of others. The issues of trust, loyalty and commitment are also ever present, as well as the theme of everyone regardless of race, colour and beliefs must join together to prevent evil controlling the world. Amongst the dark moments there are also light-hearted moments which present humour and sarcasm plus a little romance. Frost Bitten did not disappoint and I cannot wait to move on to the next book in the series, Deadly Perceptions.

*This review may contain spoilers of the previous books in the series*
Willow and her friends thought everything was finally settling down. Their camp had good people and they were helping the peoples of the worlds, bringing kindness where there was once only war. Now Lance, a prince who is the son of an enemy comes asking for help. His sister has been left for dead by their mad father. While no one else wants to trust him, Willow trusts him, in fact has feelings for him she can’t explain. Not to mention that it is in her nature to help those who need it. This takes them to a world that is straight from make-believe. It turns out, there is more than one person missing.
At the same time, the town of magical beings, the place they felt safe, may not be safe after all. After being summoned for help, they realize they are quickly set up and no one believes they hold the powers they possess. Nor do they believe in the guardians. It is obvious someone has their own plans, plans that seem to go against everything they believe in. Not to mention there seems to be a spy hiding out here too.
Just who is the spy, and what do they want? And is there anyone left they can trust? Will they be able to rescue the people in trouble? And if they do, what will be the cost?
This is an enjoyable book in a good young adult series. While it is based in higher fantasy, there are definitely hints of a Harry Potter influences throughout the book. There is so much going on in the story that you will not want to book the book down. I think it is perfect for the young adult age group, but anyone of any age would also enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars
The story The Portal Prophecies: Frost Bitten by C.A. King is a coming of age/fantasy book. This is the third book in The Portal Prophecies and it has Willow and her friends unraveling a new prophecy and in constant danger. It starts out with a request for help and leads to different worlds where they must battle enemies to survive. I really like Willow as she always thinks of others and their safety. Be sure to grab your coat and some warm clothing as this adventure partially takes place in a very cold world. Willow is also finding that her abilities are growing both in number and in strength. She is trying to understand all of the changes that are happening to her. This mission that the group is on will also lead them on a search for Santa as he has disappeared. Will Willow and her team be able to find Santa and save Christmas?
The other part of this story is the strange happenings that are beginning in a city that Willow and her friends have helped. While the residents were grateful for the help they received now there are questions being raised and accusations that are being thrown around. Put this together with a journalist that no one has seen who is writing about things that he should not know and you have the feeling that all is not well. Things have changed in this city and not for the better. Will Willow find out what is really going on and who this mysterious journalist is? This story has Willow making new friends and also asking for help from an unlikely source. From the very first book I fell in love with The Portal Prophecies and this book is an amazing addition to the series. The author has created a series of stories that will have you turning pages to find out what happens next. The characters are amazing and I love the attention to detail that is given about them. This book has quite a bit going on and a lot of changes are happening. It is highly recommended that you read this series in order as each book builds upon the last one. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars They live in extreme cold and enjoy ice and snow
4 Stars
“The Frostica are ice faeries. They live in extreme cold and enjoy ice and snow. Standing about two feet tall, you might find them unusual looking to say the least. Their bodies appear humanoid, but their faces are more animal like. If they want to communicate, the Frostica will use our language fluently. Their bite is deadly. After the initial penetration of the skin, fangs extend from their jaw, depositing a venom directly into the bloodstream of their victim. The bite effectively sends frostbite throughout the body, resulting in death.”
Frost Bitten is the third book in The Portal Prophecies by C.A King. As this is part of a series, I really recommend that you read all the books in sequence, to be able to fully appreciate the story.
We begin this story where book two left off. Willow and her friends have returned and are under scrutiny from all the magical inhabitants in the main world. It seems like everything and everyone is going against them; the Directors, the Mayor, and even the journalist Keith Quidnunk- who they have never even met.
Where book two a Halloween aspect to it, this one has a Christmas/Santa theme. The story starts when they get a request for help, which they can’t ignore. This leads them to yet another world, with a different prophecy to unravel- and where enemies they have to outwit and defeat, in order to succeed. There seems to be constant danger to contend with.
As they decipher each new prophecy they get better and more confident. But we also see the emotional toll that it’s taking on Willow. The group also seems to be more conflicted and at odds with each other, in this story.
I have to say that this is my favourite book in the series, so far. I feel Ms. King is really settling into the series and the direction she wants it to go. She has really hit her stride and it shows in her writing and the story.
Again, this story is darker than the previous two. There were times I really worried about Willow, at moments through the story she really seemed to have everything going against her and had little chance of succeeding.
It was action packed and intense, and the fast pace of the story reflected that.
This series is becoming more fascinating with each new instalment. The next book is set to be even better again.
I really recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a great YA fantasy/paranormal adventure.
Thank you Ms. King!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommend.
All of the answers are in the prophecy, but first, one has to understand the prophecy. Unknown worlds will be explored. Danger is every present, and a plea from the enemy will tug at Willow's heartstrings.
I have so adored C.A. King The Portal Prophecy series, and I could not wait to start Frost Bitten (The Portal Prophecies #3). Ms King has delivered a story so great that I was simply swept away. I met some new characters, The Frostica, which I thought were wonderful portrayed. As was Santa! Willow continues to grow as a character. So much happens to her in this book and I thought Ms King portrayed Willow's reactions very realistically. Willow struggles with everything that is happening around her. This made her character all the more believable. Once again I also found myself drawn to Lance. He is torn between doing what is right and obeying his father. He and Willow are enemies, and yet, he loves her. I do not want to give away any spoilers, but there are several tender moments between Lance and Willow that were just beautiful
Frost Bitten does stand alone. However, I think to get the most out of this series you need to start from the beginning. Ms King has a gift for storytelling and this is certainly a series you don't want to miss.
I Highly Recommend.
