Alex Bailey was a bored writer/editor of documents as humdrum as vacuum cleaner manuals. She left that life behind to create more exciting worlds than the one she lived in. The Future Memoir of Ann Jones was the first book under her (absolutely necessary) assumed identity (in order to hide Ann Jones’ identity). When she’s not dreaming of being swept away to “The Most Magical Place on Earth,” she’s tending to her organic garden while belting out Disney tunes. Some of her favorite hobbies include: telling her children that “Mother knows best”, attempting to convince woodland creatures to clean her house for her, wishing upon stars, and Disney-ing.

To knit or not to knit?

To knit or not to knit?
“The look on Freda’s face made Ann realize she was serious, which also made Ann want to burst out laughing. She looked around the circle, but no one was laughing. All heads remained lowered. How can these women take blankets and scarves so seriously? After all, it’s just knitting.” Crisp, clean engaging piece! What if you had to start over? What would you do if all you knew, had become familiar with, had suddenly disappeared? Where might you go? Ann has a vision that her husband passes and she moves to the East Coast, settling in, and acquiring a new circle of friends. Oh, but, (and here it reminds me of Tale of Two Cities and Madame sitting, knitting, and deriving pleasure from watching decaputations), this neat little clique of ‘knitting’ buddies have a very nefarious and, at times, I think, comical agaenda. Kind of like ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.’ Sort of. A refreshing, masterfully crafted glimpse into more than the ‘what ifs.’ GREAT read!!

Have you ever had the desire to just pack up your life and start all over again?  To break free of the chains that bind you and discover new, like-minded friends and exciting opportunities.  Do you believe that this could ever become a reality?  Or maybe it is just pure fantasy, best left for daydreams and reverie.  Fantasy or not, this is the premise of Alex Bailey’s novel, The Future Memoir of Ann Jones.  However, all is not as it seems to be in this book.  It has as many twists and turns as a labyrinth!  For lovers of intelligent, engaging and gripping writing…this novel is a must read!

Essentially, the book follows the escapades of Ann Jones who has a vision that her husband dies.  After his death she dreams that she moves to the East Coast to start a brand-new life.  In this peculiar vision she buys a beautiful new house, starts a successful business and ultimately finds the love of her life.  Also, she joins a local knitting club which is by no means your typical hobby group!  The knitting club is serious business with harsh and unyielding rules.  In fact, the club brings the following phrases to mind:  “Once you are in you can never get out” and “what happens in the knitting club stays in the knitting club!”  This dream scenario is told by Ann to her best friend Alex.  Her friend in turn writes out the entire version in a letter to her own sister and asks for advice about how to help Ann.

One would be sorely mistaken to think that the plot of this story sounds even remotely simple or straightforward.  It is in fact quite the opposite.  In truth, the beginning of the tale can actually be difficult to comprehend at first.  However, when the reader begins to make the necessary connections in the story and fit the pieces together, the story quickly proceeds to flow like a raging river.  It is full of fresh ideas, compelling themes and twists and turns lurking around every corner.  While the overriding main idea in the novel for me personally was “you are never alone”, there are a number of other prevalent themes as well. For instance, inherent loyalty and the freedom presented by new beginnings are powerful concepts within this book.  There were also some very dark ideas as well.  In fact, the ability to pen a novel which is written in such a way that the very dark tone is camouflaged by a light and effervescent manner, reveals the true skill of the author.

While the plot is imaginative and compelling, the numerous characters are very cleverly portrayed as well.  Ann is obviously the main character and as such she experiences significant growth throughout the story.  She starts out as quite timid and unsure of herself but ends up developing into a confident and competent woman within her own right.  The story contains numerous other players as well.  Each is described in very satisfying detail and grow appropriately according to their role in the book.  The author also utilizes her characters to deliver many of the very humorous and lighthearted scenes which are so integral to the book.  This clearly illustrates the author’s understanding of the need to use the various elements of fiction together to enhance her story.  Alex Bailey knows how to weave her craft!

I found that once I really got into this novel it became near impossible for me to put it down.  The characters were colorful, convincing and hilarious.  The setting was described in just enough detail to create an image in the mind and make it believable…yet not overdone to the point of risking losing the reader’s interest.  The plot was full of mystery and darkness… but projected in a bubbly and vivacious manner!  The ability to pull this off is absolutely the charm of this novel and what makes it so truly unique.  It is a wonderful writing style that this particular reader found captivating and completely engaging.

Alex Bailey’s debut novel, The Future Memoir of Ann Jones, is many things. It’s a fusion of romance, mystery, magical realism, fantasy, and humor. That’s a lot to corral in one book for any author, but in Bailey’s hands, it all blends nicely into a fast-paced, intriguing narrative.

The novel starts with a letter from “Alex” (who may or may not be the author) to her sister. In that letter, Alex tells the tale of an extraordinary vision experienced by her best friend, Ann Jones. This is a technique popular in the early days of novel writing when authors needed to imply that what was to follow was a found manuscript (as Hawthorn did with “The Custom House” preface to the Scarlet Letter) or a tale told to the author by the person who actually experienced the adventure in real life (think of Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe). Such an approach often gets in the way of the tale to be told because it’s superfluous to the action. Students have been known to skip these introductory bits to get to the story itself. Bailey’s version of this technique has the same built-in flaws, and it may be a bit convoluted for some readers. But trust me, those of us who keep on to the first real chapter of Ann’s fantasy are immediately rewarded with a wonderful, enchanting read.

The Future Memoir of Ann Jones is chock full of interesting—if sometimes a bit odd—characters. Ann carries the plot on her shoulders, but she’s thrown into the middle of a fantasy with attractive men, memorable women, new opportunities, and the local Knitting Club that proves to have a mysterious dark side. The book is full of characters you simply won’t soon forget and Ann’s vision soon feels real.

Bailey’s novel is a fun read, full of surprises and plot twists that take on an ominous tone by the story’s end despite the humor that abounds in Ann’s personality. The book has an ambiguous ending—a perfectly legitimate literary technique. But that leaves a lot of unanswered questions, and I would have liked to see some of the loose ends tied up nicely. Most are not.

I highly recommend The Future Memoir of Ann Jones. It touches on many diverse genres along the way, but Bailey has merged them seamlessly in a way that enriches most of them individually.

Ann Jones is a respectable, happily married mother of two with a network of family and friends on the West Coast. Then out of the blue, she has a vision of her whole life transformed. The first thing she does is run around to tell her best friend, Alex.

“I saw his death, Alex. You think I should warn him?”
The Ann Jones of the future loses her husband in box-and-basement accident. Widowed with teenage twins in college, she takes her dog and moves to the East Coast. So far, so strange.

But things get a whole lot stranger when she joins a Knitting Club. All the members have lost a husband, some in quite bizarre circumstances, but they’re all friendly, they love their pets and appreciate home cooking. The one thing they don’t do much of is knitting.

As Ann embraces a new career as a baker and welcomes a new man in her life, she begins to enjoy her freedom. But she underestimates Knitting Club and the dangers it presents.

But it was only a vision, right?

Light romance with a dark tone, this is an entertaining read with witty observations on life, love and lethal women. Perfect to read on the beach while wearing sunglasses and looking innocent.

The Future Memoir of Ann Jones: A Time Travel Romance with a Splash of Magic by Alex Bailey was a fun and mysterious read that told a cleverly woven tale- full of humour, mystery, a drop of darkness, some suspense, a light sprinkle of magic, and plenty of intrigue. I had really enjoyed the other works of Ms. Bailey’s that I have read, so I was certain I would enjoy this story as well. The premise certainly drew my attention, as did the attractive cover. Ms. Bailey spins a wonderfully imaginative tale that was a humorous cross between the ‘Stepford Wives’ and a not so dark ‘Premonition’.
Alex tell the story through a letter to her sister, which was an interesting way to capture the story. She tells of her friend Ann Jones who is a happily married mother of two, settled on the West Coast with a tight-knit circle of family and friends- and whose ‘vision’ is the subject of the letter/story. In her vision, Ann loses her husband in a basement/box accident- leaving her a widow. So, with her teenage twins in college, she decides to leave everything behind- takes her dog, and moves to the East Coast
But the story gets more complex when she joins a Knitting Club in her new area. There are strange rules, and very friendly, but quirky members, who have all lost a husband- usually in a bizarre way. Ann’s ‘new life ‘includes a great new job, as well as a new man. Things certainly seem to be falling into place. But there is an underlying danger that is the basis of the story.
The story revolves around this ‘future’ existence and Ann seeking Alex’s advice on what to do about what she’d ‘seen’, because it was only a ‘vision’ after all…..wasn’t it?
This was a fun, witty, original, engaging and entertaining story. It was a tad slow to get going, but after a few chapters the story took off. There are a few points where the story did ‘lag’ a little- but not enough to detract from my overall enjoyment of it.

    Thank you, Ms. Bailey!
