Editorial Reviews

Review

"This novel takes the reader on a voyage of emotions, making for a rich and satisfying conclusion. The final pages tie everything together in a poignant way. It is intricately plotted and matches vivid action with substantial character development. The characters, from the evil Hunsdon to the secondary characters like Addie, are truly complex. Moreover, there is a tense feeling of suspense. The reader becomes absorbed the characters' plights, hopes, and dreams and loves and cheers for their safety. This novel shows great care with difficult subject matter and a triumph of love and family. Well done." -Kirkus Reviews

Very interesting and interesting novel.
4 out of 5 stars
Very interesting and interesting novel.
“Timeless Moments” (A Time Travel mystery) by Michelle KiddWhen I started reading this novel, I was expecting a mystery of sorts that was filled with suspense and even twists and turns. I was not expecting a novel of time travel, of sorts. While I found the start of the novel quite slow, I plugged away anyway. About 1/4 through the novel it began to pick up.This is the story of Jewel Whitmore. A woman who lives in the early 1900’s. It is also the story of Jack Vines, a man who lives in the present day. At some point they meet. There are certain items which can exist through time and they even find a way to communicate.Jewel is wanting/needing to leave her abusive relationship and Jack provides her the strength to make a plan to do so. Jack believes she may have been harmed before she could leave.Throughout all this Jack and a woman named Samantha look into the past occupants of the house and their stories, which include Jewel’s and find some things of interest and some things that add to the mystery of the house and its past occupants and some that create fear for Jewel.Mixed throughout this is a story of a woman from the mid 1960’s, how she came to find the love of her life and the surprises she faces and brings into Jack and Samantha’s life.I enjoyed the novel, particularly the last quarter. The ending was a bit of a surprise. The presence of the woman and how she truly exists is interesting but unable to truly understand how it occurrs: time travel, fluke, what was in God’s plan at the end. This is an enjoyable book to read. Just recognize that it is not simply a suspenseful mystery. It also is one of timeless moments centuries and decades apart. It is one where the author writes strong characters that are interesting and relatable. The plot line is interesting and realistic in many parts. Hang with it in the slow sections;you will be glad you did.Rating: 4.4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This has to be a personal record for sleep lost over a book. I stayed up till 8AM and got 60% through and had to stop only because my Kindle was dying, and I couldn't keep my eyes open. After a nap, I dived back in and finished. And let me tell ya, what a ride. I have so many thoughts so this will be longish and contain hidden spoilers.

I bought this a couple of years back and finally decided to give it a go. I wasn't 100% sure what direction this was going to take but right from chapter one I was sold. It instantly reminded me of the movie From Time to Time the way the past and present blended and characters were able to communicate across the years. I love this kind of plot and find it so fascinating. I'll talk more about that later.

I'll go ahead and touch on the characters first. There were several and each unique. Let's get our villainous sicko out of the way first. Hunsdon. He was just... the definition of evil and a creeper and there's not one good thing I have to say about him. Jewel was a timid and sweet MC who endured so much. Her beauty was constantly referred to, to the point that it was redundant. Jack was interesting enough. Determined, passionate, and kind. I didn't like Sam at first. I thought she was a needless distraction because I wanted to focus more on the time-travel stuff. Turns out I was wrong, lol. I liked her enthusiasm for history and all-things vintage. There is a ton of other characters but if I were to go through all of them, we'd be here a while. My favorites had to be Jeff, Cindy and their kids.

There were a number of Biblical references, moments of prayer, and acknowledging God. I read other reviews that stated this book was on the preachy side. While I do agree that there were a lot of Christian themes and such, as far as I can recall, the Gospel was never shared. There were no mentions of salvation or repentance. So, while there were a ton of references and characters crying out in prayer or declaring their trust in Him, it never went as far as to preach salvation. Actually...I have an issue with Jewel's dad.... (view spoiler)

As for the time-travel/duel timeline thing, it really worked at first and kept the story moving at a good pace, but later things got confusing. (view spoiler) The communication between Jewel and Jack was really neat and intriguing! There were parts that gave me literal chills.

The romance wasn't bad. Some kissing is about it.

And the ending...the big reveal...was not what I was hoping for. (view spoiler)

Overall: I could not put this down and was thoroughly invested. While it had its moments of confusion and unsatisfactory conclusions, I did enjoy this. If you like historical mysteries, unsolved murders, time travel and dual timelines, you'll probably like this.

CONTENT WARNING: Domestic abuse! Early on there's a scene that might be uncomfortable for young or sensitive readers. Beatings, drugging and murder. No language.

My mom read this before me and got me intrigued with the plot. I enjoyed this immensely, reading it in two sessions. The plot was intricate with three timelines but was not hard to follow at all. I knew immediately the woman in the water was Jewel, and when Aiden mentioned his grandfather, I knew he was Hundson. It was still very entertaining to see all the plotlines come together. I don't understand why everyone needs every little detail tied up in a bow. There's something called suspension of disbelief when reading some books or watching some movies, especially sci-fi, fantasy, and time travel. I like wondering just a bit.

I did notice that in the yearbook, Jewel was Jewel E Boydoh, and on the marriage license, it was Eugenia Jewel Boydoh. Also, after Jewel receives the first letter from Jack, she is concerned about him researching her. He says nothing about researching her in the letter, just wanting to get to know her better through the letters. He does research her, but he doesn't tell her he did.

One thing did concern me as a Christian believer was the scene she remembers on the porch with her father and Hundson comes to visit. Her father is portrayed as loving, Godly, and a pastor. When Hundson arrives and he is a stranger to her, it's apparent that at age 10, some sort of arrangement has been made for her to marry him when she grows up. Maybe things were different in the early 1900's, but she's TEN, and he's already very inappropriately interested in her. How could her father have allowed that and been fine with it? We know Hundson is very perverted, and this speaks to that, but ten? Would have appreciated more explanation there or for her to be older, maybe 15 or 16.

I think the reason exactly how she transports 50 years into the future is not explained is because she was very beaten up and had her head repeatedly bashed against the bricks. She was just barely even conscious and had been dumped in a fast flowing and icy river at night. Even if there'd been a tunnel or mist or something, she wouldn't have seen it. Just saying.

As for the editing several reviewers have mentioned, maybe I was just reading too fast to notice, but bad editing always throws me out of the story, and that only happened with the two issues noted earlier. I've worked with an author who currently has 10 novels on Amazon and my job was mostly editing. Maybe if I had read really slowly and critically, I'd have found a few more things, but as far as I'm concerned, the editing was pretty clean. For a first novel, it's great, and I look forward to more from Kidd in the future.

So many reviewers mentioned that if they'd known it was a faith based book, they would've passed. Here's a sentence from the book description: Timeless Moments is a spine-tingling suspense laced with FAITH and love. Pretty clear to me. Also the author information says that she enjoys weaving her faith through her stories. Again, pretty clear. Every character was not spouting scripture every other page, not at all. Also consider the year 1917. The faith issue was very conservative, certainly not anything to cause all the ranting about it other reviews did. If a book offends you so much, walk away, ask for a refund, anything but really snarky and mean reviews.

This book is long and drawn out, but it works because there are 3 different stories/timelines being told at the same time. It has some mystery and suspense, in addition to some sweet moments. I got this book because of the Whispersync feature so I could listen to it on a road trip and around the house. I think the narrator did a good job bringing the characters to life. Some of the abuse and manipulation of one of the characters was definitely creepy, but I suppose that's what it shoyld be like to feel more "real." While the story has closure at the end, the story fell flat to me because the time travel part just didn't make sense. I know, I know, time travel doesn't truly make sense. However, I have read many books on time travel and there is always a whimsical "explanation" or "understanding" for why it occurred. I kept waiting to find that reason out in this story and I guess it was just a random "miracle"...? I'm not sure. Also, the very last paragraph was odd to me. It felt as if the author was trying to get a point across that sounds nice, but didn't fully come across throughout the book...well, at least not to me. I don't know. Ugh. I just have mixed feelings about the book. The writing was good, story was fine, but it just fell flat for me.

I can still feel the goosebumps all over my body, after completing the book late last night. What a wonderful story the author has woven. Kudos to Michelle Kidd's imagination and versatility in penning this saga, bringing all the threads of the story—believe me, there are many—to a neat finish. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Looking forward to reading more of her works.

Jack is fascinated by old houses. He loves to restore them and there is one in particular he always fancied in his home town. When he moves in and starts restoring it room by room, he has a spinetingling experience: There’s a young woman crying her eyes out in the garden. She insists it’s her garden, but when she runs frantically back into the house, she disappears. Jack begins to dig into the history of the house and finds any number of heartbreaking secrets.

This mystery is extremely intriguing and has a little bit of various things: time travel, romance, fight against abuse and fascinating riddles. With an easy to read language, the story captivated me from the start. Some of the riddles were easy to solve, others made for some surprising twists in the story. Woven into the absolutely believable characters is their faith, which comes naturally most of the time. Only in the end the author had to ram home a christian message that I felt was out of place. It knocked me over the head and left an unpleasant taste after this gripping read.

Some of the plot twists were a little too predictable and when the obvious bad guy really turned out to be the bad guy I was a little disappointed, but only a little. Overall, the story is great, well written and makes for an excellent reading experience. Highly recommended!
