Lake Girl Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 51 ratings

When Lily Lane first accepts the job in the small town of Lakeview Shores, she thinks she’s destined for a lazy summer serving food at the local hangout. She couldn’t have anticipated the disastrous turn her life takes before it ends.

Lily dies on the lake, but she has no idea who killed her. Instead, she is stuck in limbo as a spirit. Lily can observe others but has no way of affecting the physical world—that is, until Rose shows up. Rose, a magazine reporter, is Lily’s biological mother. Rose is determined to get justice and shares a special psychic connection with the daughter she has never known.

Together with Lily’s best friend, Jeremy, Rose begins investigating a series of crimes occurring in Lakeview Shores. Is Lily’s death connected to the thefts plaguing the community, or is it due to the actions of someone no one would have suspected? As Rose and Lily grow closer, both mother and daughter will discover that nothing is as it seems in this quiet community. Rose’s mission is important, but if she isn’t careful, it may just doom her to the same fate her daughter suffered.

Lake Girl by Cynthia Kumanchik gets off to a strong start when the protagonist of the story is killed off rather quickly. Lily works at a local place called the Shorebird where locals and tourists alike hang out. Lily has other things than work on her mind though, and goes down to the water to meet someone. Instead of meeting her dream crush of a man, she dies. When she dies, she seems to enter a limbo land, suspended above the day to day action of her town. This is fascinating to watch, and this is how we learn more about her character. This is a YA novel that is effectively written in language that is both down to earth and engaging. Lily is a strongly written character, and her mother Rose, whom Lily has never known, is now looking into her daughter's death. As an investigative reporter she now has a personal connection to the mysteries that are taking place in the lakeside community of Lakeview Shores. Well written with an easy flow and suspenseful story, this novel will please young adult readers with it's good plot and solid characters.

(Spoiler Alert) Lake Girl at first appears like it could be a simple thriller, YA mystery novel, or coming of age with a bit of romance. However, that assumption is quickly disrupted when Lily finds herself in terrible circumstances. Lily is killed and finds herself hanging around the lake, in a state that is described as “Limbo”. This allows her to sort of follow the journey and continue to right her wrong. Rather than a hunk boyfriend or crime fighting cop, her mother combines her skills to help Lily and herself uncover the truth.

At first I thought this was going to be a standard story, but I found there to be some layers and sweet tones that were unique to this story. At moments it did remind me of other movies and books I have read in the past, but I still found the reading to be enjoyable. I could have used a bit more turns and twists, maybe another layer to the story or something to beef it up. But overall I found it a good YA read.

I was intrigued to read this book as I love stories about a spirit coming back after death. The book reminded me a bit of Before I fall. Right away the action happens with the main character being killed. She had expected to have a mundane summer yet it turns out to be anything but. Her connection to her biological mother is great along with the mystery. The book itself moves fairly fast and I would have loved some more character development and a deeper POV. Also, the redemption arc felt a bit forced. I didn't have too much sympathy for the main character prior to her death. In Before I Fall at least I caught glimpses of why the main character acted the way she did, even though she wasn't the most likable but at least I had some sympathy. I didn't build that connection to the main character in this book. But this is a fast, easy read and I would recommend it to others.

    Lake Girl by Cynthia Kumanchik
I found this novel fascinating and interesting. It kept me enthralled as I picked it up each night and read until my eyes would not stay open! I hope that tells you how much I enjoyed reading this book.
Lily Lane is in Lakeview Shores spending time with her Grandma while her parents are off holidaying together in Italy.
She is a young girl who quickly forgets her promises to behave, get home on time from her holiday job at a local restaurant/bar. She sees no harm in flirting often, not caring if there is a girlfriend who’s toes she is stepping on. This may make her sound shallow and mean but Lily is a sweet, kind young girl, who just enjoys every day of life. She doesn’t take time to think of how her behaviour could be hurting any body. She would not like to think of herself as a thoughtless person or bad friend. Lily enjoys being closer to her cousin of the same age, Tessa. One night it is Tessa who sees Lily run out of her job at the Shorebird on the same lake as Grandma’s house. Tessa also worked there and heard as Lily ran by, her cousin say she had to go, she’d had a text from someone. Unfortunately it was the last time Tessa would see her cousin alive. Lily met someone in the dark, not who she thought she was meant to see. It all went horribly wrong for Lily who ended up in a watery grave, determined not to move on until she gave peace to Grandma by telling her why she was murdered and who by.
This is a novel like no other. I was enthralled, the story unfolded as Lily tried to solve the crime. She had help. Read the book to find out how and by whom.
I was given a copy of this book to read but the review is entirely my own. Enjoy this mystery as I did.

3.5 stars. When Lily is murdered, she finds herself back on Earth as a ghost but with no memory of how she died. Through a unique connection with her birth mother, she’s able to guide her mother through the investigation to help find her killer. This teen murder mystery is easy to read and light on the suspense.

Lily is not exactly a likeable character, but I guess she can be described as a typical flighty and irreverent teen who thinks the world revolves around her. I tended to skim over the passages that described how every boy found himself falling for her…and then those same descriptions regarding her mother. On the mystery side, it’s not immediately obvious who killed her, so the book at least keeps you guessing in that regard. If you enjoy the young adult genre and a casual murder mystery, give this one a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Paranormal Mystery

Though the beginning of this book did not really capture my attention, by the end of the book I was completely engrossed in the story. The plot is beautifully crafted and keeps the reader guessing. As a ghost, Lily is able to interact with the world around her in fascinating ways, but it’s her limitations that really makes this story. Will she be able to find who killed her and why? Though the characters place this in the YA reading range, I believe this book will appeal to many adult paranormal mystery readers, as well. Even if you don’t enjoy the first few chapters, it gets much better. And once it does, this book is hard to put down.
